Native Tree ID request

While clearing the very back of our woodlands Saturday, 2/4, we came across 2 small stands of an unusual tree/large shrub. They are the only 2 clusters on the property (1.3 acres) to the best of our knowledge. The trunks resemble a Crepe Myrtle, with smooth, thornless, med tan bark. Knobs seem to form where old growth has broken off. What is unusual is the new growth. Very long, thin, green spikes, as can be seen in the picture, grow from the trunks and branches. The 2nd smaller cluster can be seen to the far right in the picture.

There was one leaf bract still attached, shown in the second picture. Anyone have any idea what it might be?
