Need rec for what to plant now to have beautiful color in Nov

Please don't laugh. I am totally new to gardening and just purchased my first home in Fullerton, Orange County. I have an approx 10 ft by 10 ft planter (2 ft high) in my front yard. My extended family is coming to my home for the first time for Thanksgiving dinner and I was wondering if it was possible to plant or sow seeds now that would bloom during that time or will it be way too cool for flowers. I know that this sounds like a really silly question, but I really don't know what I'm doing, but would love to have a beautiful flower bed for when my visitors come. I saw an advertisement that said you could plant sunflowers now for "second season" flowers, but I don't know if that means for blooms in the fall or spring. I happen to love sunflowers, but am open to any recommendations for flowers hardy enough (& not too expensive to fill up my planter) that will provide color around thanksgiving. Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can provide.

Welcome Risa and congrats on your new home. Hang around here long enough and you'll learn lots.
First pick up a Western Garden Book available at bookstores, online, Lowes, HD, nurseries etc.
There are plenty of plants that flower in the winter.
Can you tell us more about the area as in how much sun, water, colors you prefer, height restrictions etc.

Second season to me is the 2nd year they are in the ground.
But here in socal we actually have 2 growing seasons but things still grow all year long.

For immediate color, think Pansies. They do wonderful here in the winter, but not sure about starting from seed.
Plan out your garden with short in front and gradually increase the height to the back. Pansies would look nice in front all their smiling faces ;)

Mums are plentiful in the stores now also.

That's a huge planter. You're going to have fun planning what to grow there.

My favorite book is Pat Welsh, Southern California Gardening, a Month-by-Month Guide. It tells you what blooms each month, what to fertilize, when to plant- all kinds of good information. There is a checklist at the back of each month that you can use. I keep a list of what blooms in my garden on that page too. Here's what I wrote down for November:

The most impressive flower to bloom in November I do not grow: Chrysanthemums. You may be able to buy smallish ones now that will bloom for Thanksgiving. You could plant three of them in the middle of your bed and put a few drifts of vincas and pansies around them. Or yoy could put a rose in the middle or back of the bed with bedding flowers (snapdragons, vincas, pansies, all of those flowers in six-packs at Home Depot).

I don't think there is anything you can plant from seed now that will bloom in November, but perhaps someone else will correct me on that. I don't think sunflowers would stand a chance, especially with this unseasonably cool weather we have been having this year.

If it were me: I'd remove the weed cloth now. I've not seen it do anything good for the development of a good soil structure in clay. Gravel: I'd be thinking a mix of sizes rather than a single screen size. My preference would be for 2,5,7mm which can be useful when it gets dug through the soil/clay. As I'm using it as a mulch I wouldn't put it on any thicker than 2". Less could be better.(Sand is a no-no. It's like uncreamed butter and sugar in an angel cake...). As I'm planting into clay, and if I didn't have too many bulbs, I'd dig out circular shapes for my patches of colour to the depth for my zone and a little extra. Into the extra I'd put a layer of about an inch of the 2mm grit so the roots can get started into a better-drained area. If I could, I'd get a grit that stood out in colour from my soil. Later, when I come to lift the bulbs, I'd be able to see when I've 'hit bedrock' and I'd know to move carefully so I didn't harm my bulbs. Because I'm wanting to improve my soil over time, I'd add some agricultural lime - about an ounce to the square yard. Once I'd covered my bulbs I'd ensure that I stayed off that ground to prevent it from compacting. That's particularly important over times in the year when it's wet. The sad-looking bulbs: I'd plant them up in containers and I'd plant them quite shallowly. Barely covered, and in a free-draining mix - even 50:50 small grit and potting mix with no peat. I wouldn't want the water to stay close to them and I'd want whatever roots they can produce to have lots of encouragement to forage. (I'd even rescue the ones I tossed and give them a go, too.) Those containers I'd put where they get not much more than a couple of degrees of frost, moderate water, and good sunlight. A bit later on, when I see green noses above the soil/gravel (yes they DO come up through gravel) I'd feed them at the prescribed amount with either some potato or tomato food - powdered so it slowly breaks down, and lightly stir it in to the surface of the soil/gravel. Just once. With the damaged bulbs - some might flower. Some will die. Some might only put up leaves and split into smaller bulbs. Which is fine, because I can grow on those daughter bulbs for a year or two to give me 'free bulbs'. Any with streaky leaves I'd dig up and burn because they might have a virus and I'd rather be safe than sorry. All it needs is one travelling aphid and it could spread. No thanks. And next year, when the bulbs are finished for the year, I'd be putting my grass clippings onto the garden strip with a light sprinkling of lime, followed by as many autumn leaves as I could scrounge. Welcome mats for the earthworms. As an aside - if you do use the smaller grit sizes you can plant into it. The small 'johnny-jump-up' pansies, florists' anemones, verbascum, dianthus-pinks, linaria, eschscholzia, and a good range of other annuals will grow there - especially if you can provide some water over the summer. They may not be huge/lush but they will be sturdy and colourful. When it comes to weeding over the gravel (yes you DO have to weed...:-( ) use a two-tine hand fork or weed hook rather than anything conventional. If you use a knife, that will work, too. Forget spades - and rotary tillers. They're often not good for the health of the soil structure on clay.

laag, that is exactly what I meant. I did not mean to replace one's landscape every 5 years. We just need more conversations on the order of, here is a good place for some instant gratification; over here is where you plant your beech tree for your, or someone's, grandchildren; here you want some quick impact but don't use that ornamental grass x because you'll never be able to wrestle it out; and so on. The other thing is, I don't think a knowledgeable gardener has to plant his or her yard JUST so that it will be beautiful for the next buyer or so that buyer doesn't have to do anything to maintain or rejuvenate the landscape. Let the buyer beware! So I see a balance between responsibility vs. freedom. Irresponsible might be knowingly planting something in a way that it will destroy the foundation in 5 years; responsibility AND satisfaction can come from plantint a nice small oak that you may, or may not, get to enjoy as a shade tree, but you know it's the right plant for the right place, so you nurture and cherish it, and someday you or someone else will get the benefit; freedom is planting some large evergreens for a screen that you just need now, that might have to be thinned later by you OR someone else-- In between all this is acquiring more landscape and plant knowledge or advice so you are avoiding totally daft creations--for the evergreen screen, maybe researching it a bit since there are choices that are more or less painful down the road-- but not merely existing to create a legacy.( How do you like your garden? Oh, I hate it, but in 20 years someone will really like it.)This is all still compatible with planting "real" trees and things. In reality, no matter how carefully you plan, it will not necessarily fulfill that dream in 15-20 yrs anyway and certainly without knowledgeable maintenance. Here is a funny thing about mature neighborhoods. In many of them, the trees are way too big for perfect (or even good) aesthetics with the small homes and lots--but the neighborhoods are beautiful in fall with glowing maples, oaks, gingko. If we followed a roadmap for scale, everyone would have had to plant only dogwoods and redbuds and Japanese maples. In some neighborhoods, hardly a home is sited on the lot in a way that a nice shade tree can be placed to provide both proper shade and not dwarf the house. So were those people visionaries, planting trees that in 20-30 yrs would be breathtaking, or irresponsible for not finding the perfect species that would not exceed 20 ft, or whatever? I agree with the shrub myth, too. In my current home, I have some ginormous azaleas that I HAVE crawled under and seen, gosh, there are actually 4 shrubs here and if I could possibly rip out 2, I wouldn't have to prune so much. But I'm not sure it can be done now(well, maybe anything can be done with the right tools and risk-taking). So one of my convoluted points is that even if one person plants the "perfectly spaced for maturity" landscape, or whatever, it will still never be care-free, and a succession of subsequent, generally plant-ignorant and/or plant-disinterested homeowners (I think that's fair; it's not meant to be holier-than-thou) will likely screw it up. As in, beds with lots of space between plantings have to have regular attention to mulching and weeding ("look at these idiots who planted here before us--they just left us these puny shrubs in a weed farm!). So one of the myths is that humans have some kind of amoebic shared mind and will carry on the garden vision of the previous homeowner. All that said, I LIKE being well-warned, in print or otherwise, about the characteristics of a tree or shrub or whatever, and find myself doing a lot more research before trying something (can almost get paralyzing) so that I can make an informed decision about placement, maintenance and so forth.

Oh, Wilmingtonislander, you are so supportive! Thanks for your offer to put my name on a Passiflora! I don't know what kind I have (seeds came from someone on GW), but since the plants haven't died, just haven't grown, I'm not inclined to pull them up quite yet. Maybe they're just waiting til something changes, lol. Ever hear of the building maintenance man who was supposed to fix the heat/a/c system - he couldn't heat it up and then he couldn't cool it down! Sometimes I am mystified by gardening here, and think the plants are too - do they want sun, cool, rain, dry, sand, or what, ha. But, I'll get onto it eventually. I'm a student at Armstrong right now, as my assoc degree isn't getting me anywhere here. Going for the bachelors degree. I have the credentials, just not the college degree on paper that they want. Hoping that once I'm done, I will be able to get a job! I go full-time (scholarships and such), so not much time for personal stuff when I'm studying, as I have to keep my GPA up. Once I'm done with school and hopefully have a good job, then maybe I can do the garden club thing, lol. And, though I'm getting close in age to the 'blue hairs', as you so aptly refer to, I shall never get old! I am young at heart, and refuse to ever change. Perish the thought I should ever get caught up in the lifestyle of 'cultured' table and board games, and gossip. I'm a hands-on doer, and not one bit embarrassed by it. I'm already having to make major adaptations to do things due to arthritis and artificial joints. But nobody can tell me I have to have an 'old' attitude! I would definitely not fit in with the crowd that hires everything done, nor with the ones that do floral arranging. Not my cup of tea. Let me just go dig in the dirt, lol. For whoever asked, I'm on Wilmington Island myself. Love the islands too. Very quiet neighborhood, very nice people here. And, no, I didn't know there was a bamboo farm here. Do you know what the name of it is or can you tell me more? Sounds like a good adventure for me! Maybe take that one in before school starts (and it's coming fast!) Ok, I'm going through my seeds here to see what else I can get into today . I just spray-painted 3 baskets from Walmart that had badly neglected Mothers' Day plants in them, and they finally marked them down to half price, with the Mothers' Day tags still on them! Lordy, I just about cracked up. Is it any wonder the little plants weren't doing very well - the baskets had plastic liners, and the pots were sitting in baskets half full with water! But, the kalanchoes were none the worse for the wear. I am getting the soil dried out to what is more normal, cleaned up the baskets with bleach to kill the mold, and they are freshly spray painted. Sorry to drone on, gals, I'm just trying to learn and do things on a student's budget! Have a great rest of the weekend and thank you for being so nice and generous! jeribelle

Good Morning ...long time no post BUT I am reading when I have time. Christmas Exchange - I'm in! French Lick - I'm out. I will be in San Diego for my oldest DS's Police Academy graduation. Diet - I am doing very well on WW. I actually really love the program and it is working for me. I needed accountability and I was not good at all. I love food and as much as I loved some of the low carb diets...I cheated too easily because I missed some on the things that I loved to eat. On WW, I can have a potato, banana, popcorn...etc. I am not putting down low carb, it works for some but I don't remember the last time I lost 10 pounds so easily. I am doing their Core plan and I don't count points unless it is a treat like a Skinny Cow ice cream sandwich, fat free chips or something like that. I have to pay each week to get weighed and I find the meetings pretty good. I am doing with the SO and he is losing too. He needed to lose weight and I really was not into making different meals for each of us so I said I would do WW with him. He is losing too and being as competitive as I am...I think it keeps me on task. Work - BUSY and I lost my assistant so I have twice as much work again to do. Working out - I work in an office full of IT geeks. I was talking to one of them the other day and he was telling me about this program for the XBox. ( Video Game Machine ) It is called Yourself Fitness. It is like having a personal trainer. It creates different work outs for you according to your fitness level. It keeps you interested because the workouts change all the time. They even ask you what kinds of other workout items you have and incorporate that into the workout. ( weights, fitness ball, step ) I am seriously considering this because I really want to get back into shape. My car accident in 03 has really messed up my back. I haven't worked out since then because it seems like any little thing give me sciatica. I put on 10 pounds on top of what I needed to lose and that only added to having low self esteem about myself. I have one of the momentus birthdays next year and I really really want to look good for it. Kids -They are all well and happy! I cannot ask for more. wow, thank you both so much for the suggestions. I will definitely be heading to the library asap. In terms of the planter's issues. It does get full sun, & I recently added a couple bags of compost to it in preparation for whatever was going to go in. The only thing that is kind of strange (to me, at least) is that there are automatic sprinklers that will go on in the planter whenever I put the lawn sprinklers on. I read online that you're not supposed to do overhead watering for certain plants (zinnias), but don't know if this will impact it too much, except that I can't keep it too dry in there or I will dry out the lawn. Thanks again for the great info.

You can cap those sprinkler heads or close them all the way, thats what I do.

Risa, you can also buy little retrofit thingies that go onto the sprinkler riser and turn into a drip line. That would be one way to get the water down below the foliage. I saw some at Home Depot the other day that looked like octopuses (octopi?) and screwed right on to the riser.

Some of the above suggestions will either not flower in time or won't like the cooler weather. If I were you, I would plant pansies/violas, snapdragons, primroses, ornamental cabbage/kale, and/or mums. If you plant them now or even plant in early October, they will be nice and full by Thanksgiving, and maybe bloom on into next year. And I agree to forget about seeds, you will have to buy plants at this point. Make sure you buy plants that have a lot of buds coming up, not ones that are in full bloom now, or they might be spent by the time the holidays come.

Risa ... I did a google search on key words "southern california fall blooming plants" and got lots of interesting hits. The one below lists some flowers you may find useful. I was thinking Nandina [no flowers, but lovely, lacy redish foliage] which would look great as a taller background plant. Also using sweet alyssum as a low growing edging or ground cover. If you can find potted cosmos, please consider ... they are just lovely. Also consider butterfly bush as one of the larger plants at rear of planter. Also, if you just wander around a nursery with pen and pad ... write names that you like, size and price . Then at library with the Sunset book, make a chart of plant size from this list. Then on graph paper plot the whole area. Sounds like a lot of work, but so worth it.
Having your whole family over in your new home ... how lovely! One last thing.... please get a cheap notebook and start a garden journal ... in my journal I have separate pages for roses, trees, etc. And then a chart for the garden area. Then month by month listings of jobs done.

I checked out borderbarbs website, and although it has some interesting suggestions, I have to disagree that they will work in Fullerton in September-November 2010. That website is all about "heat resistant" plants, and we are having one of the coolest years on record. Since Risa says she is a newbie, I would hate for her to plant a bed full of "heat resistant" plants and then wonder why they are croaking in the upcoming overcast fall Orange County weather, and think she did something wrong. She needs plants that are happy with weather and temps in the 50s and even 40's at night, which is how I came up with my list, above. She will be very unhappy trying to grow Marigolds and Petunias in Fullerton in November.

While it is true that we have had a cooler than normal summer, no guarantees that the fall will also be cooler. My thoughts would be to select plants that can flex between some variation in weather.

The link below predicts more Santana winds than 'normal' this fall and winter.[YIKES!] They usually come with heat.

Trying to figure all the factors is probably too complicated for Risa, who is new and wants a beautiful display for her family this fall. It seems logical that some of the 'heat tolerant' plants from that article will do as well in cooler weather.
....snip...."Basically any summer annual you can buy now in your local nursery, for planting should be a good bet for blooming straight through from now to November."

The article did have a good hint ... to have a few 'spare' plants in pots to fill in for any failures. BTW did anyone suggest Lantana? Trailing over the edge of the planter would be striking. The ones in my garden are very forgiving of a variety of exposures from part shade to full on day long sun.
