Some river birch that will be replacing trees that did not fare well on our recent landscape install...

Here is the story, some of you may remember we were contacting some landscape designers to install some beds on each side of our property last spring due to neighbors and thes ebeds are a result of everything....

Ok..so the story...

We recently had a tree line put in between our yard and our neighbors for privacy. In these pictures you will see some different pines and then some nookia cypress trees. The nookia did not do well in the conditions that they had(too wet) and most have yellowed and a few have died. In the spring we are replacing them with three river birch(there were 5 nookias) trees that about about 14-16 feet tall at this point. We feel that this will give us some privacy faster and a bit more dense at the top than the nookias that grow somewhat downward and weepy. We would like to add in some grasses in between the trees to "fill in" and give us a bit more dense privacy where the trunks will be. We'd like suggestions for some taller grasses that will look nice with the river birch or other plants that may work as well. They need to be a larger/taller species as our deck is facing this area and it is raised as our lot is at a higher elevation that the house next door. We can keep the canopy of the birch trimmed up a bit to allow them to grow if needed.

So what do you think? Am I goig the wrong direction completely?

Thank you!

This is not really of the actual area where we are replacing the trees, but it is a pretty pic of the other trees that are in that did well....
