Look no further that the climber named Peter Mayle sold by Wayside Gardens. This one should be added to the list of 'bullet proof' plants. Clean and green. Never a sign of disease. Very large dark pink to light red cabbage rose. (Color deepens in cool weather) Very fragrant. Excellent bloomer. I picked my last blossom two weeks ago! Hot sun to light shade. A winner....

Thanks for the valuable tip, nandina, but, you know, that actually sounds too good to be true. Your zone, I'm sure would make a tremendous difference, but I imagine we 7'er's can also grow this guy from Provence.

Wayside is sold out of Peter Mayle right now, but I found the last one available at S & W in Tenn. There are several other vendors in California. Thanks, nandina, bulletproof, fragrant and long-blooming are what I'm all about.

How about giving us a recommendation like that in yellow or salmon, even orange? Seems like the long bloom selections are limited to the pinks and reds.

I have a lovely yellow miniature that gets 4' high, JB's don't bother it, never gets black spot, and blooms its heart out all summer. I have no idea what her name is because it was a gift (from the florist!). I'd like to propagate it but have no experience with roses. Any advice?

Nancy, I take cuttings from May to August, wound the stem lightly on one side, dip in liquid rooting hormone (I like Dip n'Grow) and plug into potting mix in a quart container. I water and poke a hole in the potting mix first so the hormone won't be washed off. Then I put the cutting outside in the shade until it shows new growth, then move to dappled shade. As long as the cutting has shown new growth AND significant rooting (sometimes the cutting will have a little bit of new growth before rooting), then the roots can be disturbed so it can be transplanted.

Just an additional note to say that cuttings of Peter Mayle that I rooted for DD are thriving in Zone 5, Detroit. Also, this is a very 'upright' climber, not sprawling. Easy to train on a pillar or pergola, etc.

Nandina, that is lovely. One more question... Do the JB's love it? I have 2 roses Zepherine and Heirloom. The JB's never bothered Zepherine, but I couldn't keep them off Heirloom. It has beautiful blooms, but the JB's kept them so ate up it was impossible to enjoy them!

Westerland is a good one along with many of the Noisette roses (originated in Charleston SC).

There are many Noisettes, and other climbers available at Roses Unlimited in Laurens, SC or Ashdown Roses in Landrum, SC.

Sorry...can't answer your question re Japanese beetles and Peter Mayle rose. The JB's do not enjoy our more southerly hospitality and choose not to vacation here. Shhhh, don't tell them about the lush life of the Low Country.

There isn't a rose that's very resistant to JBs. JBs do seem to like some more than others (Double Delight, for instance), but all roses get chewed on.

'Iceberg' bloomed all summer for me even in part-shade, but mine is the bush form. I am not sure if the climber (I'm pretty sure there is one) is as good. I didn't see anyone mention 'New Dawn'. I've only had mine a year so I can't judge it yet, but doesn't it have a reputation as being somewhat carefree and long-blooming? It's quite thorny though. Also 'Buff Beauty' can be a climber, though it's not terribly large. The blooms are yellowish apricot. Very pretty and care-free. -Ais.

yup, new dawn is very carefree- and quite thorny. i have a friend who has it trained up into a cedar hedge, where it climbs to 20-25' easily, and blooms high. mine doesn't bloom in scads because i have it in a bit too much shade, but it does repeatedly bloom.

i had good luck with roses from the uncommon rose, and their search engine is great. you can search by color, fragrance, type, etc and narrow down what you want. the plants are own root and were small, but all did really well for me, and you probably can order a larger size.

one that might fit your criiteria of peach or orange(except largish blooms) is a miniature climbing rose by the name of 'work of art'. it's peachy, with hints of yellow and red. blooms on & off all summer clear til christmas almost- again, i have it in too much shade, but she still does well. not too vigorous, and not too thorny. scented nicely- unusual for a mini. the buds half opened are exquisite- then the full blooms look more like a typical mini- about 2" across maybe. sets little orange hips. no signs of diseases and i don't spray. tam

How about Madame Alfred Carriere? It's a large growing plant with large, white, fragrant blooms blushed with pink. It's on the healthy side and has a massive spring bloom followed by intermittent summer bloom and a good fall flush. It is not very thorny.

Westerland..have seen it completely bs free though mine's not. Lovely shades in it, not all blaring orange.
Crepuscule...healthy and great rebloom, beautiful colors, less fragrance
Casino, a big full yellow bloom, good rebloom, fair bs resistance
2nd the vote on Compassion...it's gorgeous and so fragrant, great rebloom and health
Jaune Desprez ditto the above

Please don't order a rose from Wayside. You WILL get a virused rose.
I agree with alicia's choices and vendors. My top choice would be Crepuscule. I grow 80-90 roses (NO HYBRID TEAS) and this one is almost perfect. Denise

I have to chime in that I am very disenchanted by Wayside and consider them just a huge & glossy commercial flower factory, so let the buyer beware. Those pictures are designed to ensnare you. I won't do business with them at all. For roses I like Witherspoon, Countryside and Heirloom. I bought my stunning, climbing 4th of July at that place in Sanford..shop early there for Weeks roses.

I have a wonderful own-root yellow David Austin...a very compact & delicate beauty that is never without flowers and is totally disease and JB resistant...Molineux. The only drawback is the flowers blow quickly.

New Dawn is so amazing, as Tammy says...delicate Marie Pavie, Gene Boerner (the perfect little pink tea rose), La Marne, Mrs. B.R. Cant (what a dowager!), Bonica, Caldwell Pink (old fashioned)....all of these have great stamina to all rose gremlins.

You are certainly right Pup, we received a large bare root order from Weeks that are nicely potted up as we speak. We already have people coming around for them. I asked the garden manager the other day about their criteria when ordering roses and she answered simply "that they are pretty much carefree". Adele

Just wanted to mention another virtue of Westerland -- amazing fragrance!! And another nursery to mention, that has a beautiful display garden and good prices, is Heaven Scent Roses near Winston Salem. I will try to follow up with more information on them.

I'm partial to the "Nearly Wild" aka "Almost Wild" pink climber that can (sometimes) be purchased at Lowes. I have never seen any rose that grows as fast as this one, a beautiful climber and does not require a lot of care. I planted these in 2002. There are five pictures of them on link below.

Very beautiful, Ruth! I have a couple of NW's, and did not realize that there was a climbing type. They are such constant bloomers that I'd prefer one in place of my New Dawn (reblooms but it's a long wait). Doesn't look like you have any disease issues. I also have a treeform NW that is quite disease prone.

I love what you did to your place Ruth. You made your house a home. You were right, the roses do a spectacular job hiding the tongue of the trailor. I live in a mobile home too and am trying my best to make it presentable, though it is rented, so I am going slowly. I have made the majority of my purchases from lowes markdown table. I made friends with the garden department manager over there and she tells me what is going down and when. She also has given me discounts for no reason before as well. I LOVE LOWES! Anyway, your house is beautiful.

I love Lowes also. I have spent MORE time over at Lowes than I hany ANY OTHER place in NC (besides my home/yard). I find myself very 'alone' when it comes to gardening in this park. Others think I'm nuts for putting this kind of $ into a trailer yard that I don't even own (own the trailer but rent the lot). I have no illusions about 'moving out' & into a real home one day, (been there, done that). That is the most heard excuse that I hear.

Like you said, I've tried to make this a home. I have no tolerance for laziness.

My next project is to put in a small pond by the front patio. I added to the patio last fall. Thought I would never get that concrete in. A real mess.

Well I found a couple new ones. Rosa x Old Blush/climbing - 1793 and Rosa x Duchesse de Brabant- 1857. Not entirely what I was looking for, but should be nice. They should fill at least the 'easy to grow and fragrant' criteria.

You'll love those. I've got both of them and they're wonderful.

Has any one ever grown the climber 'Peace'? I received it for Valentines day. I had a non climbing Peace before we moved here , was afraid to move it, so hubby bought me this one. Guess he didn't realize it was a climber.

Nandina, my Peter Mayle just arrived yesterday. You had described it as a climber, but I can't seem to find any reference to its being that form. Would you say that it is just a normal shrub rose with long canes and an upright habit? Will it grow on a trellis/wall?

Hope you see this after all this time...took a while for that order to be filled...what a healthy plant he is!

Autumn Sunset is good but the blooms blow quickly. I have a Crepuscule that is growing gangbusters and it has pretty blooms but I think next year it will have more blooms, still young. Westerland is one of my favorites but I love oranges. You could put the question on the roses forum. Alicia has some good suggestions. Good luck!!
