So, check out the roses in the Romantica series. I love most of them, and many are reported winter hardy - this helps even if you keep them in a greenhouse in the winter. I could not link "Romantica" on HMF as I used to because this search didn't v come up. Here are some I have been growing for many years Frederic Mistral - very fragrant, excellent for cutting ( I know that you don't care much about fragrance but maybe your wife love to have a few fragrant bouquet in the house) Rouge Royale (Caruso) extremely fragrant and if you cut it in bud stage it lasts for a week in a vase; very Austin- like flowers except that Austins are not good cut g flowers and Caruso is a very good cut flower Bolero - low growing, very fragrant, quite healthy Johan Strauss - great cut flower, blooms a lot, green apple scent; can have thrip problems Traviata - perfect foliage, very tall, no scent Eden shrubby climber but I am not sure that it is feasible in pot Tschaikovski - accoring to my husband, it is our most fragrant rose; I doubt that but it is beautiful, tall and narrow; not a good cut flower Yves Piaget - looks like a peony; low growing so it is suitable for pot culture; very fragrant Johann Strauss Not Romanticas but Meillands that worth checking out: Pink Peace- this in my hot climate is actually better for cutting than leaving blooms on the bush; flowers last much longer in the house Jardins de Bagatelle Papa Meilland - the best red I ever smelled. ---- Tantau Augusta Louise should be a rose you could like but I just planted in January so I didn't see any blooms yet. It is a HT from Tantau's "Nostalgie' series, bloom looks like petal packed and should be fragrant. Mcgleason or Beth could tell you more. Beth have pictures of this rose. And, !!! Check aout Caramel Antike - that should be a perfect rose for you. By all means do check at Palatine Kordes Freelandeer HT-s -they are florist roses bred for garden use. Nobody knows more about them than Rene, owner of Palatine. OK, I must run

Tavimh, Tell your husband congrats!!! Great accomplishment. I love the Manoa area, my aunt lives above the Univesity in the hills. Some plumeria people have stated the UHO might be an AKA for Kaleinani aka Kaulanani, I have both and they are very similar. It is a leggy vertical grower, so you will need some head room for her and patience as leggy growers do not bloom as often as compacts or dwarfs, but once it hits a certain age and height it will bloom regularly. You might also consider University Hawaii Lani aka Lani's Beauty. This cultivar was developed by UH for the lei industry. Personally if I had to chose one Id go with Lani. Oh I forgot to mention that without heat and sunlight the flowers will only look yellow, no orange or reds in it. I know Denver has the most sun days of anywhere in the US, 300 days per year. But with the GH effect who knows how that will go. I also forgot that Marilynns Gardens has a Lani also but to me the flowers are a bit different as I have both. Wetsuitor: The only ones I dug up this year were 4 washies and a sago palm, each of which would take considerable protection here including heat. I will be leaving those in when they get 2 big to handle, but the washies seem to take root distubance very well and overwinter well indoors. There is of course some set back and it is slow to get growing in the spring, however I'm not ready to get into an elaborate heating system yet. I'm trying to work out my kinks this year on a trachy. Plus my wife would kill me if I had Jim's setup! I live in maybe the coldest winter 6a in America. This will be my 3rd winter here, the lowest low each of the past 2 years is -2, and -8F, HOWEVER, it is the norm to go 3 weeks at a time never getting above freezing. Last December and January, we had 9 days that got above freezing during the day, and most of those were in the 33-38F range for highs. We also had 2 3-weeks seesions of consecutive below freezing weather. The other problem is that I generally don't see grass from Dec.1 to mid-March, it never gets warm enough to ever melt the snow. Last year I lost 2 decent sized trachies and a sabal palmetto, and my minors and needle that survived received considerable damage, the minors burned 98%, the only things left were the emerging spears. Needle had spear pull with surving pups. That was with frost cloth wrapped unheated leaf cages, which provided 0-30% damage and no losses the year before.

I received my bubble envelope filled with many of my seed wishes yesterday too! Lots of great bonuses also!! Thanks to everyone for contributing their seeds and making my gardening wishes come true! However, the BIGGEST THANKS goes to Patty, our Round Robin Coordinator, who worked long hours sorting through hundreds of seed packets, matching up wishes with actual packets of seeds, distributing, adding "extras", and then mailing off lot of envelopes to participants!!! A BIG round of applause for Patty!!! This wouldn't have been possible without YOU!!!
