Sci Fi bug

A couple of days ago, sans camera, I spied a fascinating bug on the tiny purple flowers of the ground cover outside. He/she/it was behaving like a bee. About the size of one of those giant black shiny ones that seem to be the norm here in Placerville. However, he had those ferny kind of antlers you see on moths, a fuzzy head, a pale yellow/cream fuzzy stripe around his middle and what appeared to be moth wings that were closed and kinda squared off at the end. He was using clear wings (up near his head/shoulder area) to hover like a bee and drink from each tiny flower.

Does anyone have a clue what it is?
