any East Bend, NC gardeners?

Looking for garden buddies. East Bend is about 20 minutes from where I live. DH took me there today for the first time and I fell in love with the historic district. Anyone gardening there? I'd love a good reason to visit East Bend again. Let's hear from you. And please check out my trade list. Robin in Lewisville

Robin, I know from my NC map that East Bend is a small town northwest of Winston-Salem, but not anything else about the area. What is its history and what is special about its historic district?

I had to laugh at this because my father was originally from East Bend, retired there until his death, and my mother still lives there. Tons of relatives also live there. I've never met anyone outside of my family who even knew where East Bend was, much less heard of it.

Yes, there are some cool houses in the downtown area. I understand a nice Italian restaurant has even opened down there in one of the old houses, something the town/county sorely needs.

Up until a few months ago, Yadkin county was one of the few dry counties in the state, which is really ironic considering its amazingly successful transition from tobacco growing to grape vineyards and wineries. Most restaurants stayed clear of the county because they couldn't make any money off of alcohol sales. In this case, alcohol sales equals more restaurants (progress).

A place I've wanted to visit is in Jackson, Ms, the reconstructed home and gardens of Eudora Welty. The book, "One Writer's Garden, Eudora Welty's Home Place" shows pictures of how the reconstruction has been done. The book indicates a number of old roses have been replanted in that garden, which were original to the home when Eudora and her mother lived there. I'd love to see Elizabeth Lawrence's home and garden in Charlotte, NC, Wing Garden, mostly because I am a big fan of hers. In South Carolina there is a topiary garden, Pearl Fryar Garden in Bishopville, that I've wanted to visit as well. It seems amazing from what I've seen. I agree with Ann above about visiting the Vicksburg, MS civil war memorial. The cemetery, the grounds and the exhibits are really interesting to see. The wonderful hydrangea gardens in Birmingham, Al, Aldridge Gardens, are worth seeing and should be blooming if you're going soon. I am sorry I never made it to Bellingrath to see the rose gardens there. The botanical gardens in Huntsville and Nashville are worth seeing. The Hermitage, Andrew Jackson's homeplace and gardens, is worth a trip if you're in Nashville. I first saw a chestnut rose in that garden there. The Natchez Trace is beautiful, I think. There is also a beautiful garden, or at least was 30 years ago, south of Shreveport, Hodges Gardens. I saw a lot of beautiful camellias at that garden; I don't know what it's like now, but worth checking into if you're going to be in Shreveport. I've always wanted to see the beginning point of the Mississippi River up in Wisconsin. I hope you have a wonderful trip; it's one I'd like to take as well sometime. Take care, travelling solo!

If the whole front garden was densely planted with junipers, there may not be any weed problem to deal with, and you could suggest that she simply have the entire front area mulched with ground up tree trimmings, and skip the newspaper. You can often get such tree trimmings delivered for free by contacting local arborists in the area, they would be happy to skip having to haul it away to landfill and pay for the privilege. The concern I would have is to determine if there are any noxious perennial weeds such as Himalayan Blackberry, Algerian or English Ivy, or other persistant weeds such as Bermuda Grass or similar that could take over any future plantings. If there are, then some weed treatment will be necessary to give your sis a clean slate. I'd also have your sister send you lots of good digital photos of the cleaned up yard, so you can help her with the redesign. It certainly would help you have a better feel for the possibilities if you could come out and visit before you helped with the design, but if you are doing this without the benefit of seeing the site, I would also recommend that you look into some good general purpose books that address landscape design for SF Bay Area gardens from a water conserving viewpoint, as it looks likely we may be going into water rationing next spring if we have another dry winter with less than average rainfall. I can't seem to locate my copy of the most recent Landscaping book published by the EBMUD(East Bay Municipal Utility District), which is the local water supply agency for the east bay, nor remember the exact title, but this has some excellent pointers on setting up a new garden in a more rational, energy and water conserving way, without being overly preachy about it. Sunset Magazine and the Sunset Western Garden Encyclopedia with its planting information and plant lists is also a great general purpose reference. Sunset's regional headquarters and demonstration gardens are right nearby in Menlo Park, and open to the general public for tours, your sister,(and/or both of you), might get some good ideas from a visit. Palo Alto is a very nice place to garden, and has some beautiful, (if also incredibly expensive), neighborhoods, and is generally very full of large mature shade trees and dedicated gardeners. It also gets just enough winter chill to say that many common subtropicals are a bit too tender to be reliable choices, such as bougainvillea, as it regularly gets freezes each winter. Has your sister gardened already in California, or does she have any ideas of what they want to do? Lots of choices, almost too many plants to choose from, and no real traditions out here for the most part, so the choice of style and types of plantings is pretty wide open. If they are looking to plant under ideal conditions, it actually makes sense to get things started in the late fall here, to take advantage of the rains and cooler weather. Late October into February can be prime planting season, if the soil isn't too wet to be worked.

Came through ok here as well. Minor damage from winds, couple small trees down, some large limbs down are common. Winds only gusted up to around 50MPH here during heavy rain bands. Only knocked over my 5' windmill in its pot, but no damage. Bananas got a bit of shred, but not real bad. The water came up to the drain tops here, and moved up in the toilet some, but nothing like we saw before. We had sandbagged and prepared yesterday. IT figures we didnt flood. I would put money on it if we had not had the sand bags ready, we would have flooded massively. Just how things go it seems. LOL! Cute citty Jonnieb. I found my cat the night after Isabel went thru. I was helping my friend move into his new house in columbia heights, and i saw this tiny little dot in the yard. Just a couple ears sticking up. I approached but he ran away, but kept coming back, we put water in ice cube trays for him ( its all we had at the time) and he would come and drink, but was very skittish. I finally got him, no mother be found anywhere, no cat calling, nothing. We think his mother may have perished during the storm / flooding. He was flea ridden and terribly imaciated, just skin and bones really. I took him home that night, and took him to the vet the following week. At that point we did not know he was a boy, so I named him Isabel, after the storm. At the vet, the vet said to me.. well, Isable, IS A BOY! LOL! I had to bottle feed him with an eye dropper for a couple weeks. He weighed a whopping 6 ounces and completely fit in the palm of my hand, tail and all. The vet said he was likely the runt, and he was barely 4 weeks old. Hes now 5 years old as of the last week in august, and is a happy, healthy, but lean, and smaller house cat. Hes got the most beautiful ocean green eyes. Hes still got that "WILD" in him tho. He was after all a wild ferral city kitty. Heres a couple of pics of him.

Lest y'all think this is not garden related, trust me - it is very garden related. I lost my Ziggy (ergo, zigzag) in December and I need a new garden pal. Bear with me, please.

Quirkpod and Zizzag - sorry, but I don't live in East Bend or Yadkin county, but my father was born there and I have lots of family still in the area, so I'm a frequent visitor.

I live in Chapel Hill and have a keen interest in gardening here on several acres. Currently helping DH build a garden shed. A couple of years ago, we installed a stone retaining wall and patio. It's a four-season garden, lots of woodies and perennials mixed in.

Don't know much about those old houses in East Bend. My relatives were all farmers who raised tobacco and beef/dairy cattle and lived somewhat out of town.

Zigzag, my condolences on your Ziggy. We just lost our old man kitty who was 21 years old this Fall. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the kennel you mention, but beagles make great (albeit loud...they have the funniest bark) pets.

Thanks, Spazzycat - it was worth a try and so far, I'm getting very good feedback on said kennel from other sources. Zig was a pound puppy, so this is my first time out 'buying' a friend, and I'm enlisting all the help I can get.

My condolences about your kitty, but 21 is a nice ripe, old age - hope he just expired in his sleep and didn't have to undergo heavy medical stuff. I lost Zig to a rare blood cell cancer - we conservatively fought it for nearly three years, beating the odds by a mile, and she never had a bad day.

I know beagles are great - Zig sure filled my bill for 13 years. As for the 'funniest bark' - well, that's the beagle bay, very handy and a true benchmark when treeing a coon or chasing down a rabbit !

My Ziggy never did do the beagle bay - I think she ran away from home before she learned it - but, what she did do was the most blood curdling screach/scream you have ever heard! More than once I had to literally pick her up and remove her from the Greenway mid-walk - people were looking at us really funny and, to be honest, she was embarrassing ..... in an endearing sort of way.

So, there will be a new pup in my gardens sooner than later and I'll probably be back here begging for advice. Thanks for listening. :o)
