Christmas Cactus leaves turning yellow

I have had my Christmas Cactus for probably around 8 years. It has done great and I have repotted it three times...it's really good sized. Just recently some of the leaves on a few of the branches have begun to turn yellow. Also, a bunch of the leaves have fallen off; even green colored ones. I keep it in my window where it gets partial sun and only water maybe once every other week, or longer depending on the soil. Does anybody know why the leaves are turning yellow and falling off? Please help if you can! :)

I agree w/ Toni & would have guessed overwatering, but if only watered every one to 2 wks, 2 wks is likely too long for this plant now. It's summer, if it's getting hot where you are, pls. check the leaves closely, are they getting wrinkly looking?

Pls. be reminded (even tho' you've had yours 8 yrs. so you must have a clue what you're doing) that these are jungle cacti that hail from the tropics, so they need lots of water esp. in the heat (as long as the mix is very fast draining).

They also generally don't need potting up larger very often as their roots aren't too large.

Also pls. check the soil & rootball to make sure it hasn't become to dry & hard to actually absorb the water. This can happen easily if the mix is high in peat. Good luck!

Kt, the most frequent reasons leaves yellow are overwatering, underwatering and insects.
When was the last time you fertilized/repotted? Soil should dry between waterings..soil should look and feel crumbly..
Have you checked your CC for insects? Look under leaves and between stems. Webbs, white cottony patches, brown bumps..
Can you set your plant outside for summmer months? Toni

After looking at Whitton's I think that the WalMart NOID yellows may be 'Xmas Flame'. There was a tag on the WalMart plant with the growers name on it: A&A of Kline Township PA. A little internet research yielded that a grower of Schlumbera in "Archibald", supplier to WalMart, was being shut down by it's parent company vanhoekelen greenhouses. Ssuarkc - Epsom salts (MgSO4) are high in Mg, so if you suspect a Mg toxicity, why would you add more? Since an excess (toxicity level) of any nutrient has the same limiting potential as a deficiency, an excess (toxicity) of Mg (or any other nutrient) can "make your plant sick". Are you sure you didn't read it was a (P)hosphorous deficiency (rather than a Mg deficiency) that has some considerable potential to cause purplish foliage? The most common cause of purple leaves (very common at this time of year) is a deficiency of phosphorus (P) because P is required to make ATP and ATP is needed to turn sugars to starch and to load sugar into phloem for transport. No P - no ATP - no move sugars/starches - anthocyanin (purple pigment) builds up - plant turns purple. The most frequent cause of a P deficiency is cold soils, which is why so many plants planted out too early turn purple. A P deficiency is not the only suspect cause of purple leaves. Nearly any environmental condition that puts the brakes on growth and the accompanying use of sugars, but does not limit sugar production (photosynthesis) can cause anthocyanin buildup and purple leaves. If only the outer edges of the leaves are purple, it may be a K or Mg deficiency. If the center of the leaves are also purple, it could be too much Ca in the soil or the result of too much water in the soil blocking uptake of P and Mg. Do not apply a fertilizer with the middle number higher than either of the other two numbers (N & K) to container plants. There is never a need for that much P (relative to N) in container culture unless you're supplying only N in another form. Hi Cole, The segments turning purple has nothing to do w/ watering, it's usually a reaction to stronger sunlight & does not harm the plant at all. I believe the thinning segments have to do w/ improper drainage, is that the mix they came w/? Is it possible it has hardened off & become impossible to rewet? In that case the water tends to run down the inside of the pot, right out the bottom & doesn't get into the rootball. These plants are best NOT potted up, they tend not to want it, have small roots & don't need the larger pot until the plant is much larger. I have some for several years in their original 3 or 4" pots. Also overpotting them can lead to overwatering & subsequent rot. Generally they benefit from withholding of water for about a month after they bloom, then resume watering somewhat & in Spring when you see lots of new growth, that's the time to resume watering more heavily. In the meantime, I'd take a pencil or stick, poke some holes in the top of the mix around the plant & then when you water, water down into these holes in hopes that the water will go right into the rootball where it can do some good. That's right about the aerial roots, normal behavior, do nothing about it. The reddish tint (or sometimes purplish) is just a reaction to sunlight. Mine sometimes gets that way in peak summer in its west window. Not a problem at all, I ignore it completely.

Could this be the season that they rest? July1 through Sept 30 When is the rest period for these plants? Jungle plants usually rest during our hot months, because we are No. of the equator. Norma

Hiya Norma,

No, I believe this is their time of most active new growth, lots of new growth now (from April/May) thru Sept./Oct., when they slow down & start getting ready to set blooms.

They rest after blooming, so since mine blooms at New Years, it tends to rest through Jan.-Feb. (& looks pretty crappy then too).

I really think the soil may have hardened too much to absorb water (& it's likely running out the sides of the pot). I'd suggest the grower unpot the whole thing to see what's going on underneath. There's really no other way to know for sure.

I concur wholeheartedly with this conclusion. If the problem persists, unpot it and check the roots. If you are using a mix high in peat, water it as usual and then unpot the next day. This will tell you whether the peat is hydrophobic and starving your plant. HTH - Jo

Thank you all for the help! After reading your responses, it triggered in my memory, that after coming home from a week's vacation, that I watered my Christmas Cactus two days in a row, which I have never done before. I did overwater it. I took some of your advice and tried putting it outside, hoping it would help dry it out and recover. It has gotten rained on a couple times, so it is still recovering. Is there anything else that I can do to help it recover faster, or just to make sure it comes back completely? It hasn't lost too many more leaves, but parts of it are still pretty yellow.

Also, when I do water my plant on my normal regular basis, I water it from the bottom up. I have a special pot with a hole in the bottom to water it there. Would the roots still possibly be hardened from watering with doing it that way? I'm wondering if I should still un-pot the whole thing and then re-pot it. Any suggestions would really be appreciated. Thanks to everyone!
