Christmas Cactus with red leaves?
Comments (35)Ssuarkc - Epsom salts (MgSO4) are high in Mg, so if you suspect a Mg toxicity, why would you add more? Since an excess (toxicity level) of any nutrient has the same limiting potential as a deficiency, an excess (toxicity) of Mg (or any other nutrient) can "make your plant sick". Are you sure you didn't read it was a (P)hosphorous deficiency (rather than a Mg deficiency) that has some considerable potential to cause purplish foliage? The most common cause of purple leaves (very common at this time of year) is a deficiency of phosphorus (P) because P is required to make ATP and ATP is needed to turn sugars to starch and to load sugar into phloem for transport. No P - no ATP - no move sugars/starches - anthocyanin (purple pigment) builds up - plant turns purple. The most frequent cause of a P deficiency is cold soils, which is why so many plants planted out too early turn purple. A P deficiency is not the only suspect cause of purple leaves. Nearly any environmental condition that puts the brakes on growth and the accompanying use of sugars, but does not limit sugar production (photosynthesis) can cause anthocyanin buildup and purple leaves. If only the outer edges of the leaves are purple, it may be a K or Mg deficiency. If the center of the leaves are also purple, it could be too much Ca in the soil or the result of too much water in the soil blocking uptake of P and Mg. Do not apply a fertilizer with the middle number higher than either of the other two numbers (N & K) to container plants. There is never a need for that much P (relative to N) in container culture unless you're supplying only N in another form. Plants use about 6 times more N than P and the massive doses of P in 'bloom-booster fertilizers' cannot do any good. Al...See MoreChristmas Cactus, new tips turning red?
Comments (5)Christy, even though your CC is in an outside shady area, when placed outside, a shady spot is stronger light than sunny areas indoors..so what you have are red hues on leaves..This is normal..I've got a few plants, (lipstick plant for one) growing red hued leaves. It's sitting right against a west window.. As long as foliage feels firm, (not mushy or dry) your CC should do fine. Toni...See Morejade plant concerns, turning purple, wrinkled weak leaves
Comments (22)Separate threads would be better, but here we are. Shanesirish5, if you are nervous about the plant's health from chopping a large branch, don't be. If you are concerned about the balance and look of the plant in the future, it's hard for me to recommend that level of pruning through pictures. If you could start a relationship in a local bonsai club, you would probably find someone willing to look at the plant in person and give recommendations. I'm guessing this specimen would rate that kind of attention and effort based on what you've said. Spiritdancer2020, you can use the search tool here for 'gritty mixes'. You'll get a book's worth of manifold opinions, probably all of which work well for jades. At the VERY LEAST, a simple solution that keeps you from having to find a variety of ingredients (if time, money, desire are issues), buy a bag of cactus and succulent soil from a local garden center, a bag of perlite, and mix the two in equal measure. There's no indication where you live, so if getting any of these materials is difficult, tell us where you live and we can try to help. A friend of mine in Indonesia can't get what many of us would call common ingredients, but he is successful with builder's gravel and backyard soil. ez...See MoreXmas cactus purple leaves
Comments (11)I must be showing my age then, back in the old days we use to let plants have some sort of sun and would usually water them. As I was saying for an epic it's usually a lot of water and sometimes watering them needs to be more often What I do is imagine a 200 inch rain storm passing though a potted soil every year as the plant that grows in the pot is oddly able to handle it ( hence the phrase tropical cacti) Sorry that the pros at scotts cant explain them selves any better nor do they desire to take the blame for what you did. What you did ? You trusted them. If the question is what soil can you use that can allow the imaginary 200 inches of annual rainfall pass trough it via a sprayer with misting device then have a look. What you see is what i got and this is after an entire day in the rain and will probably get another gallon by end of the week....See Moregreenman28 NorCal 7b/8a
