Nope, Painted Lady butterflies are roughly 50-50 male-female.

Very few butterflies have strictly male common names such as satyr, alderman, or emperor. Even a Monarch or an Admiral can be a woman.

You are welcome jlk. Your new challenge will be to keep an eye out for the American Lady and learn to ID her apart from the Painted Lady!

Can you tell me what flower the Painted Lady is on?

I have been trying to I.D. something growing by my back steps that was planted by a former owner that looks like what you have.

I know it is in the mint family, but I can't I.D. it exactly.

And bandjzmom, thats gonna be a hard task. I just googled American Lady butterfly and jeeeez it looks so similar to the Painted Lady!!
Betty, ugh I wish that was my garden!! LOL!! I was actually at Home Depot looking around trying to find some plants and I came across these. And I swear there were at least 100 Silver Spotted Skippers on these along with 2 Painted Ladies and a Black Swallowtail. The only thing that it said on the tag was 'Blue Fortune' I believe. Sorry I can't be of more help. =(
When I go back today I'll check it out again for you, just to be sure!
I'm for sure going to get me some of these, they are a butterfly magnet!

The 'Blue Fortune' is agastache. Great for pollinators as well.

JLK - Check you local Lowes on the clearance rack for the blue fortune hyssop - I just bought 5 1-gallon sized plants for 1.00 each and the plants are beautiful! I also got 5 1-gallon JoePye weed plants. I brought them home and they were immediately covered with silver-spotted skippers. I got them at the Dayton Mall store.

Kims' got it right! I went back and checked and thats what it was. =)

Jeanner, just one buck?! At Home Depot they were 6.00! Glad I didn't buy any..ahhaha.
I'm definitely going to stop by Lowe's tomorrow then to check and see if they have any, thanks for the heads up!!

And is it just me or is there like, an explosion of Silver Spotted Skippers? They are EVERYWHERE. Are they all over the place where you're at too, jeanner?

Kim, on a side note, I looked at your blog. Regarding the zebra tomatoes, I believe you are letting them ripen a little too long. If you eat them when they are started to get yellow streaks, I think you will like the flavor a lot more. They are one of my favorite tomatoes when eaten at the proper time.

Kim, I also looked at your blog. I saw the picture of the milkweed you found and I realized it looks just like the stuff growing at the back of my yard along the fence with a bunch of other weeds lol. I remember looking at it, thinking, what the heck is this stuff? Now I'm pretty sure thats what it is. So, I googled it, and it looks like it has huge seed pods all over it, but I've never seen it bloom like some pictures show, is this normal?
I'll definitely post some pictures up on here tomorrow, hopefully you guys can let me know what it is. =)))

Your pic is beautiful. The way the light hit it's wings made the colors really pop.

There are lots of good field guides out there jlk, but one of my favorite and most used butterfly ID books is one titled "The Life Cycles of Butterflies: From Egg to Maturity, a Visual Guide to 23 Common Garden Butterflies." It is a VERY good reference for someone who is learning to ID the butterflies. The photos are wonderful, and there is a lot of good info there. It can be had at Amazon for about $13, but you may find it for even less elsewhere if you look. The authors of this book also have a website which is nice. My advice is to read as much as you can from many different places and look at loads of pics. I would be happy to send some nice sites to you if you'd like. Just drop an e-mail to me. :o)

Bandjzmom, thanks for letting me know about that book! I've been looking for a good one, so I'll definitely be looking it up..I wonder if they carry it in book stores?

I also have another question...is it too late to start planting any flowers? Everything is going on sale now and I really wanted to pick some things up. It's been getting cooler here, but seeing how this is Ohio, the weather could completely change tomorrow lol.

Now is an excellent time to plant as long as you keep it watered. It's also helpful to mulch but I don't always bother. Lots of good sales going on!
