Newbie to brugs needs a little help

First off..let me say hello! :O)

I've been a lurker on this forum for awhile now..but, just recently I traded for some cuttings...and now I need some help.

If I killed these little guys...I'd be so sad! I really want them to make it!

I have had the two cuttings in question only a short period of time.

I received a couple of other cuttings around the same time....and they are doing much better.

My problem is...these two cuttings ( a brugs and a datura) are both very floppy. lol

The other two I've had equally as long are both upright and doing great....but, these two just don't seem to wanna perk up.

Any advice?

I have them in my birdbath, and I give them water...and they are in a part shade place.

Thank you in advance for helping me get my babies back to where they need to be!

Cannadoit nice to see you here..:) I have to ask what do mean a birdbath? Sitting in water? Do you know their names? We could help better...I am sure glad to see ya! They are not sitting in water....I fill it up a little in the morning for them...but within an hour it's all evaporated.....it's in the 90's here right now...so I sometimes have to water twice a day outside.....and mist things off up to 4 times a day in my greenhouse.

I am not sure of the name of the datura.....that's not very helpful is it? lol

The brugs is a Axelrose? I'm for certain it doesn't look bad due to anyones fault other than my own. lol

I think that cutting might be a goner..I went out and looked, I don't think it's going to make it.

I have received hard stemmed cuttings in the fall from people and had much better success...perhaps I'll stick to those kinds of cuttings rather than the soft green cuttings. I'm not good enough with brugs to be able to make those grow.

Thanks for the invite to the swap as well...I joined a big one, I'm afraid i'll get all kinds of mixed up if I join another one before that one is over...but, I appreciate the invite.

Hi jaybizzle: Welcome to the garden web. Your picture looks like it could be a perennial called Astilbe Here is how you grow plants from cuttings Taking cuttings is the same for most plants. First you must make sure everything you use is very clean. In a clean pail mix your soil with the water so you make sure the soil is damp right through. Use a soilless mix like pro mix or one that is formulated for seeds and cuttings. Just make sure it has no fertilizer in it. You want the soil wet but not too wet. Squeeze a handful and some moisture should come out but not a lot. Fill your pots and make a little hole in the center with your finger or something else that will make a small hole. Take your cuttings: With a sharp knife or razor blade cut a 5 or 6 inch piece from the growing tip, cutting just below a leaf. All roots and branches come from a leaf joint. Remove all but the top 5 or 6 leaves. Dip about 1/2 inch of the cut end in rooting hormone. It comes in powder or gel, either is OK as long as it's for soft wood cuttings. I use Stim-root NO. 1. After it's dipped put it in the hole and cover it in, and you're done. Keep the soil moist but not overly wet. They will look wilted at first but that will change as it starts to grow roots. You will know it's rooted when it starts to show new growth. Wait until it is rooted well before you set it out.

Hi Brittney, I am also having a little trouble figuring out what you are trying to convey. If I understand you correctly you are talking about an odd sized leaf here and there that is not the same size as the one next to it. Even if that isn't what you're talking about, my same answer would still be that African violets don't necessarily produce the same size leaves all the time. Even healthy ones. Throw in the fact that you have suckers that are contributing to the size of the leaves. Your plant looks very healthy. I wouldn't worry about the general health of the plant or about a few leaves that don't seem to belong. The next thing you need to do is get rid of those extra crowns. You will find the mother plant becoming more symmetrical after that happens. The fact that you have so many suckers forming may mean that your plant just has a propensity for producing them. After you have propagated a couple of these plantlets, for fun, you should be on the lookout for more suckers forming. Then I would suggest that you take tweezers and nip them in the bud, no pun intended (well maybe a little). If you have any other questions or don't understand by all means don't be shy. Ask away. In the meantime, good luck with your project. Larry PS - Unfortunately I don't know of a web site that has a good picture of a sucker. Maybe someone else does. If I had a violet that had a sucker I could take a picture, but I don't have one in the time. Identifying where a sucker stops in the mother plant begins is almost an art. You will get better at it as time goes on.

I am far from an expert, but...I think just about everything can benefit a little cutting back, and as you said, it's a little leggy. This could be an opportunity to shape it, get some cuttings for new plants, and force a little new growth. Yes Brugs do like lots of food and water. i plant them in the ground when they look too big for a 1gal pot. How big are they? Have they flowered yet?

Welcome, want2plant! : ) I'm glad you decided to post--newbies shouldn't be afraid to ask gardeners for help, because all gardeners were once newbies. And it's great that you want to call your plant the correct name--as you've already experienced, lots of folks get these confused and call them the wrong name, and thus just confuse even more people. Here's another good visual to help you determine which one you have. Notice the SHAPE of the leaves, as well as the direction the flowers point: This is an Angel's Trumpet: This is a Datura (Devil's Trumpet, but I don't use that name): . The brug's leaves are like ovals, but pointy on one end. The datura leaves have more curves to them--sort of a ruffle look. It can be slightly confusing to hear that brug flowers point down, and daturas point up--while that is true, the flowers don't always point STRAIGHT up or down one some varieties--some flowers will decide to point sideways, sometimes. If you're not sure if your flowers are pointing up or down, I suggest you look at the BUDS that have not opened but look like they are ready to open soon. The datura buds point up, the brug buds point down. Personally, I don't see buds on either plant point sideways, unless a leaf is propping it up or something. Did that help?

I'm still a bit confused. What type of medium are the cuttings in? I agree that the mature brug stems are easier to root, at least for me but this time of year the softer green stems usually do alright. I'd put it in a container of well draining soil and keep it in a shady area. Maybe it will root. I've never had luck rooting daturas and honestly haven't tried more then once or twice. They're easy to start from seed and will mature in a short time.

It's been so hot here the past few weeks that I keep the mister and fans going in the greenhouse most of the day.

Canna you have heard from one of our pros..:)))) I would do what Karyn says she is one of our brug plant moms (and speciality plants too)....

Hey that RR looks like a lot of fun too :)... I personally have never had sucess with that type of swap...Too much traveling for the plants (in summer time) and I dont know how to take care of them when I get them... Newbie me learning..:) Let us know how it goes....Welcome to the brug forum!!!!

I have all my cuttings in the following mix...2 parts perlite, 1 part vermiculite and 1 part african violet soil.
I use that for my hoya and epiphyllum...and since i was trying to get these to root I thought the loose soil might help them out.

Thanks for your advice....Maybe I'll get lucky and get a trade or two later in the season for some woodier stems or something.

You're too nice! lol I am pretty good with getting most things to root....I guess that's why it bothers me so badly when I have problems with something....but, If you never try anything new...then what fun is your addiction...oops...I mean hobby. lol

The only thing I might do is add a bit more soiless mix so it's more like half soil, half vermiculite/perlite.

There will be plenty of cuttings available around Oct. Anywhere from Sept to Dec is when most of us cut our plants back for storage.

Yes, it might be too well draining in this heat. With more soil in the mix you should be able to stick the pots in the shade and they will be ok. The variegated ones don't seem to need as much water as the others or it will kill them. They need more shade too. Haven't grown axel rose but thats what I found with the others I have tried. I have never heard of anyone rooting daturas either. Let me know if that one makes it.

I see you got the right advice on rooting already. So all I need to add is good luck and if not...like Karyn says...fall is approaching.
