new pics of my jade branch rooting....

Hi all, remember my jade branch...

here it is today....

and as you can see it is growing roots everywhere...

I have it in this big pot, so it doesn't tip over...

I left it with no soil for serveral weeks and then I added just 4 inches...and no water...

do you think since it is growing roots everywhere that there are roots on the bottom, or should I pull it up and see, or can I start watering it just a little like 4 oz or so...I still have it in my living room, I got the branch this far I don't want to mess up now...thanks for any suggestions....and help.....linda

I remember that Jade branch alright! Nice!

Those roots growing from the nodes mean that the Jade is actively looking for water.....so, please, go ahead and water. I wouldn't disturb the roots in the potting medium yet, since you can assume that there are roots growing in there - as above so below. ;)

I'd also advise that you prune off some of that foliage, eventhough it looks very nice and full. I'd prune off any drooping or pendulous growth, and I'd try to preserve the vigorous new growth tips.

I'd let the plant continue growing through this summer, then I'd pot it this autumn. If you're in zone 4, you might do this around September. In my area, I do my autumn pruning and re-potting in October-November.

You might have seen the update on my large Jade cutting in one of the other Threads floating around this Forum, but I'll post it here, too. I got this cutting from Joscience (he's a really great guy!). I left the cutting out of soil for several weeks, then before putting it into rooting-mix I pruned off excess foliage (mostly to help balance the weight of the cutting/keep it from leaning too far one way or the other). Many of these branches I consider "nurse branches," which I'm using to establish the cutting. Once I have plenty of new growth for photosynthesis, I'll begin removing/shaping the older growth.

Here's a shot next to one of my cats - and then a pic after I'd potted the cutting. The large stones in the pot were merely to prop the cutting up.

That rot started several months ago, until it finally reached the branches. and you noticed it, Josh has a handle on this respond to his question and follow his advise. I don't know where you live, the leaves and branch coundn't handle the water it was getting at that time. Save the base, and follow Josh's instructions. Norma

Hi Josh, I'm sad to say that condition of both my jades worsened. I came back from a trip away to find that both were almost completely rotten. The person caring for them felt terrible but I told her the plants weren't healthy to begin with. I got them both while living in the Shenandoah Valley (Virginia). One 5 years ago, one 3 years ago. They were very happy in a sunny spot on my porch during the summer months. I took them with me on an extended trip to western Michigan 2 years ago and one ended up with a strange yellow-brown fungus that leaked out of the drainage hole. I repotted that one but it never really recovered. I moved to Ohio and the days and days with little to no sun really seemed to stunt both plants. Leaves crinkled and once an entire branch dropped. Just before I went out of town last month I took a risk and cut back both plants considerably. When I returned two weeks later both were decimated. I've kept the base of one in hopes that the new cut I made will heal and leaves will grow. In the meantime I've decided it's time to start again with two new jades. (picturess to come - currently between cameras). I'm hoping some cuttings I took from the original plants will root as well. Here are a few babies that seem okay so far. Hi there, So, I decided to take it out of the pot and look at the roots (cringing as a couple of branches fell off in the process). I had never really washed all the dirt off of the root ball and examined the heart of the matter. I was surprised to find, not rotten roots, but very dry roots. I think that when I repotted, I left a hard ball of old dirt around the roots, only putting the new loose dirt around it. When I was watering, I guess the water was flowing around the roots and they weren't getting any of the goodness. So, I solved my own problem? But, lets see if it can recover - the roots are really dry and under-developed looking at this point, and the branches and leaves are all dry and wrinkly. I guess it's really important to do a careful job when re-potting. In order to allow the roots to make new growth, should I prune the branches back a lot? Would that help?

Hi John, Sorry you're struggling w/ this. Well there lots of folks here way more knowledgeable than I about Jades, but here's a start. Pls. cut off all shriveled up, dry growth, it's dead or dying & won't come back. Anything black is rot & should also be cut back. Anything soft &/or mushy is also rot & should also be cut off. In your last pic, that new soil looks too peaty, if you have no other faster draining ingredients, I'd start over, adding at least 30% perlite to break that up. It's just too peaty. If these were mine, I'd start over completely, by taking the whole thing apart, discarding thin & spindly growth (it won't recover). I'd scale down to smaller pots (less roots need less room). I'd separate the very good growth from the medium OK growth & repot them, in better mix & smaller pots each preferably clay. Let's see what other folks have to say.
