Hello Bay Area! What is everyone planting right now?

Just wondering what everyone is busy planting right now....

I have a smallish yard that has both sun and shade - I've been adding some shasta daisies and penstimon to the sun, but I'm a little stuck on the shade. I need a mid-sized shrub, I'm thinking about a camelia. I also need to add a smallish tree on my slope, which is a very difficult spot (clay soil, mostly sun) and I'm not sure what to choose.

So in this hot July, what is everyone else up to?

Planting? In this heat? Nope, not I...except a few annual type things in pots.
Also, I'm going to get some 4" epiphyllums bought at a show last fall finally potted.

For me, this time of year is usually spent watering, deadheading, fertilizing, cutting back and cleaning up earlier blooming plants, maybe a little pruning, and a lot of planning.
I've bought a few things, but I generally just store them in the "plant ghetto" until late fall-early winter. That's my prime planting time.

I put in some State Fair zinnias last week, just to fill in some gaps...but I did all other flowering annuals from seed...and this time of year for plants in the ground it is all maintenance.

Of course, the pots on my deck are another story. Just potted up all my coleus starts, and I need to repot some cacti and take care of some other potted plants.

But in my yard, I'm the one with the watering can and the hose, especially these last few days.

A crepe myrtle might work for you as a tree on the slope. There are compact varieties available. For shade/sun, ferns or hydrangeas or rhodies are my favorites.

coolbutterfly, that is exactly what I plan to do! I've started a few others from cuttings, it's so easy. I just trimmed some of my larger ones in a hedgerow and stuck the cuttings (from the ones that are leafed out) into the dirt next to some that aren't showing growth yet. I managed to start a bicolor that way, I figured it's worth a shot. Just water the heck out of them and see if it works. Has your sky blue bloomed yet? The photos make it look like a wonderful light blue but I wonder if it really is. I've been wanting an Ivory, but I'm going to see if any of my Purple Emperor come back first, since they occupy the best spot to put in the Ivory. So far it's not looking so good, but I did find a brand new little leaflet on a Blue Chip last night so maybe there's still a chance.

Lettuce you can do now. Basil and green bean seeds: sow in April. I'd just buy tomato starts...the variety available now is so amazing, why bother with seeds yourself unless you're growing 50 plants or something. After this season, in November sow a cover crop like vetch or rye or clover in your vacant wine barrels and vacant beds. Then you can cut them down in March and let them decompose for a month in your wine barrels or beds before April or May's new planting. Improves your soil the easy and cheap way. You can always amend the old soil though if you want to before you plant. Another veggie to grow over Winter for Spring fruit is fava beans (sow in November). Fava beans are also a decent cover crop as the roots add nitrogen to the soil. Not everyone likes the fava bean as preparation for cooking is somewhat demanding, but there are some mighty tasty recipes out there. And production is usually outstanding. Pretty plants as well. That's some but not all I know.

Mark4321 -- You are located right at the doorstep of fig guru Jon of Encanto Farms. You have the best advise, variety choices & probably the best buys. Price should be your least consideration for a variety that would be yummmy, especially for mom. From my experience, it pays big time to have a yummy fig & my wife can never get enough of good figs. So now, even my dinners are better tasting & the flip side is the waistline challenge.

Still a very nice day to get out and walk around the park but Audrey has already closed up. We went today. I couldn't believe how much it had grown since the Lawn and Garden show. Just a bit of a dead mouse smell when we walked into the building but it wasn't overpowering. It might have been worse yesterday. Thanks for keeping us up to date on it's progress Violet. I could see the top of the new Botanical building. : )
