Inexpensive plants in the SF Bay Area?

Hi, I recently dug up a volunteer seedling in my Mom's yard (I don't know where the parent tree is located). She's a big fan of figs and I thought it would be nice for her to have a little tree in a pot.

However, after reading this forum it's clear I should get a a named variety if I want to get decent fruit (or any at all).

So I figured I'd replace the seedling with a small cutting or plant. I checked out a few nurseries around here. Those with 5 gallon pots--much bigger than I want--charge $50. The only place with one gallon pots was selling them for $30.

So I'm curious if anyone knows of a source of cheap plants--a nursery, annual plant sale, etc. What I'm finding is a lot more than I want to pay.

Mark4321 -- You are located right at the doorstep of fig guru Jon of Encanto Farms. You have the best advise, variety choices & probably the best buys. Price should be your least consideration for a variety that would be yummmy, especially for mom. From my experience, it pays big time to have a yummy fig & my wife can never get enough of good figs. So now, even my dinners are better tasting & the flip side is the waistline challenge.

In part shade here in the bay area? It can and will reach 9'. Just be careful on the shade part...too much,too deep, and they will languish and die. They are also very sensitive to being dug up and moved. They are not like the Gingers that die down in winter. The variegated will flower...but they are not as large flowers here as the all green or even the variegated in hot summer climates in soucal.
