western redbud under a dense deciduous tree
Comments (6)I have a Western redbud in a fairly shady spot. Mine was a foot tall when I planted it in 2008; now it's five feet tall and just bloomed for the first time this past fall. (When it grows another three or four feet, it will start getting more sun.) They don't typically bloom until they've been in the ground for a couple of years, so the fact that yours has been blooming repeatedly leads me to believe it was already fairly old when you planted it. This could be the reason that it hasn't grown noticeably. If it was rather large when transplanted, the transplant process may have damaged its root system significantly, so it may have needed to a few years for its roots to recover. In the wild, Western redbuds often grow as understory trees beneath other, taller trees. They may look prettier if they receive at least partial sun, but I've definitely seen them surviving in dense shade in quite a few different locations....See MoreWestern Redbud - is it dead?
Comments (3)Western redbuds are in nature often found in creekbeds, they are one CA native that can take a lot of water. One of mine that is in a somewhat soggy spot due to bad drainage is doing the best of all of them. Cut off a bit here and there and see if there is life in the wood--it will be grey or dark all the way though if it is dead. If you keep hitting dead wood, it's dead. I have several of these--they don't transplant well at all. Your tree got off to a bad start--you may need to try with another one. Don't hesitate to start a new one from seed (in the desired spot--don't transplant!) They grow quite fast from seed....See MoreHow often to water Western Redbud tree?
Comments (4)How often have you been watering it? Does your tree seem to be drought-stressed? (Leaves wilting, browning and falling off?) If you haven't been watering it at all and it looks stressed, once a month seems like good advice...if it looks healthy, don't water it at all. Western redbud is extremely drought-tolerant and prefers dry summers. If you've been watering it more often than once a month and it still looks like it's wilting, stop. Sometimes the signs of overwatering actually look like underwatering!...See MoreWestern Redbud- leaves falling
Comments (6)I had 6 western redbuds for 12 years, one will drop its leaves quickly and another right next to it will still have green leaves. Each of them was on its own schedule, even though they were right next to each other. Your description sounds normal for them. Once the leaves turned yellow they dropped quickly--the pretty gold was very brief. Ginko will turn gold and hold for weeks and weeks and weeks--far better show, but a much larger tree as well....See Moredeedlemusic
