I have killed enough pitcher plants thru the years but now I kept 2 small plants alive, growing well, producing pitchers all over, and multiplying. Most advice are not to let sit in water. Believe me, my plants do sit on some water and doing great. I normally water from the bottom of the pot and to let them soak up as much as they need. Probably this way provides enough humidity to produce pitchers. With enough growths, allow me to experiment in producing new plants. I keep my mother plants indoor facing south with lots of light. As my new cuttings start growing, now they are in our tunnel entrance again facing south with lots of light. Although cuttings are still small, I see them starting to produce pitchers. I think enough light is most important. Now is a great time to save up rain water for their need. Note: if plant is growing too tall, try clipping and re-rooting them. This also encourage new side shoots and may be pitchers.

Sometimes less is .more. I have foud that working ftom the soil up. Do a soil test and determine what you are dealing with and make any ammendments that might be missing .Then your your roses will begin to respond. At this point a fish emulsion is a good fertilizer to use because it will also feed the soil. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Well, I am not saying this house is well decorated, I am saying that this house is lucky enough to have been left well enough alone. This house completely dodged the 1980s Victoriana-revival renovations with polyurethaned oak kitchen cabinets and mauve slipper tubs and shellacked beadboard bathrooms and cabbage rose wallpaper with bow and swag borders, and I think that is a good thing. There's no such thing as an "authentic kitchen" for a house this old, so I don't know what the right answer is for that. If a random person could buy a house like this and do something sensitive and appropriate, that would be great, but the majority of people can't, I don't think. So I think every time a house like this comes onto the market it's vulnerable to something really unfortunate happening to it. Personally I would rather take half cheerful half Addams family than HGTV any day. And I think the generation who moved into houses and didn't do a whole bunch of stuff to "make it theirs" or "update it" and so forth is really dying off, so I am not optimistic that this house won't have bad things done to it.

Wow - after dealing with one rambler, I can hardly imagine dealing with several at once. "Stabby" is a good word - the thorns on ours were not huge, but curved and very very sharp, and of course the canes are flexible and love to whip around. They kept grabbing my hat off of my head, and even though I was wearing extra heavy gardening denim, they ripped holes in it. After some consideration, I am not surprised that your roses rebounded quickly - that is not something I am worried about. Rootstock is another matter - every single rose in my garden is on its own roots, except perhaps for some ancient ones planted by my DH's ancestors. I really think all of those have gone own root by now, as I have not seen a root sucker coming up anywhere for decades. I won't plant a rose unless I can get it own root, and anyway most of the roses I plant are cuttings I rooted myself. Life is way too short to keep having to deal with (here anyway) zillions of Dr. Huey plants, which in our climate tend to be way more energetic than the scions. I do remember some places where the scion was gone, it took us 2-3 tries to dig up Dr. Huey until it stopped coming up again. Of course, when an emerging rootstock turned out NOT to be Dr. Huey, I aways waited for it to bloom to see if I liked it - Here is my favorite, 'de la Grifferaie (1845) - the rose tree it killed was yellow, and boring, so I was fascinated when dlG came up, a mystery to me, but I could tell by the leaves it was something special. So much that I waited through 4 Springs with no blooms, until it did this on the Fifth one, and continues to do that every Spring ever since. Fabulous strong fragrance, too, and no disease whatever.
