Recommended tree nurseries LA / Ventura area

My family lives in the San Fernando valley and are doing a complete remodel and landscape to our house and are going to put in quite a few new trees. Some of the types would be Fruitless Olive, Flowering Cherry, Evergreen Ash, Sychamore, Coral Bark Cherry, and others. Do any of you know some nice tree nurserys with decent prices around the valley, Thousand Oaks, Filmore, or Moorpark area. Hopefully some of these places we could get slightly larger ones to start.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've always had a good experience at the Boething Treeland nursery in Woodland Hills - www.boethingtreeland.com They have an incredible selection of trees available in sizes from 5 gallon pots to boxes that need a crane to lift them! Most importantly, they have a very knowledgeable staff, who'll make sure you select a tree compatible with your site, and an experienced delivery crew who can also plant your specimen (highly recommended if you go with a larger box size).

If you're interested in fruit trees, general landscaping plants and possibly the best rose selection in the area, it's well worth a drive to Otto and Sons in Fillmore - www.ottoandsons-nursery.com They're a wholesale nursery, and not open to the public all the time, so make sure you check with them first before you visit.

Good luck with your search. In my experience, planting a tree is one of the best and most satisfying investments you can make.

I have lived in the SF Valley my whole life and have never been to Boething. My husband and I moved to WH almost two years ago and I drive by there every day! This post has inspired me to go. (Better leave the credit cards at home!)

By the way, they have a link on their site to their plant list. Where do I start?!

I just wanted to add that anytime I want something out of the ordinary I use mail order nurseries. Specialty nurseries are often excellent, since they sell to those in the know. Very few retail nurseries, even those of excellent quality such as Yamagani's, can have depth as well as breadth. They can't afford to, since their market is the general gardening public. Perhaps their typical customer is more discerning than that, since they are shopping at a real nursery instead of a box store, but still they cannot specialize too much. One thing about fruit trees is that you may want to concentrate on California-based mail order businesses, if you decide to go that way. A couple of out-of-state nurseries I called were not allowed to ship the fruit trees I wanted to California. I believe that some of the really big ones (Stark) have less problem with this. Apparently there are all sorts of expensive agricultural inspection hurdles to mount for a nursery in another state to ship fruit plants to California. This is California protecting its agricultural base. Kinda surprised me, thinking how fast we are paving over the best agricultural land for expensive housing, but so it is. Rosefolly

Bay Area Nurseries for fruit trees/vines

I'm a big fan of Yamagami's nursery in Cupertino. They are on the pricey side but their nursery people are very helpful and they carry nice quality, and a good variety. Yamagamisnursery.com They are closed this week, will reopen on the 2nd of January. Also Roger Reynolds nursery up on the peninsula are good. www.rogerreynoldsnursery.com They might be a bit of a drive for you. And are you anywhere near Central wholesale nursery? Despite their name they do sell to the public. That's worth a look - when I was there in mid-summer they didn't have too much selection in fruit trees, but their inventory is always changing. Nashville area nurseries recommendations

You definitely need to check out the big plant sale on Saturday, April 14 (2012), at the TN state fairgrounds in Nashville. Doors open at 9 a.m., and you should be in line well before that time, because people know to come early to get the best selection. This annual sale is sponsored by The Perennial Plant Society of Middle TN, and offers the largest and best selection of perennials in the area, and some special annuals and vines and shrubs as well. Prices are way lower than the garden centers that have been mentioned here, and are competitive with box store prices. But you have choices of over 450 varieties, instead of the very few at the box stores. If you go to the Lawn and Garden Show in March, look for the Perennial Plant Society of Middle TN table and pick up a plant sale flyer and some other plant info.
