The Climate Prediction Center extended outlooks show much cooler than normal temperatures for almost all of the western U.S. for at least the next two weeks. The outlooks issued today are the first in many days that *don't* have the coldest temps (relative to normal) centered in so. Calif.

I have been shivering all week. I lost a lot of weight recently so I get cold very easily.

I don't mind the cooler temps: I can take them better than the heat.

42 this morning. I had the furnace on for a bit. I need to stay away from the travel sites cuz I'm getting an itch to go somewhere warmer. ; )

Well,its June. Maybe its just me to be so amazed at a SECOND wave of June "storms". The roof and streets were wet and I could hear the dunk.dunk,of drip. Not much water being needed is the positive. Ferns look great.

I think I heard that it's supposed to end next week, maybe Thursday. At least for So.Cal.

It's cool and breezy here today but at least the sun is out. Still, I had the furnace on again this morning while I showered and dressed. All three kitties have been snuggling close at night. DH is jealous ; )

Last week there was 1" hail just 15 miles to the north of here. We really love this cooler weather. It is so nice to get out and work in the garden without baking in the heat.

omg,My heading is hanging as the sun NEVER broke out in the eastbay today,with that fog-wind too. 65 never felt so miserable.

It snowed in New Jersey-heavy snow!..In June.
I saw that before,it was a movie where the ice sheets melted and the statue of liberty was in snowbanks!

Based upon the latest outlooks from the Climate Prediction Center, it'll warm up to "normal" here in so.Calif. before it warms up for you in no.Calif. You're expected to continue with cool weather for at least a couple of weeks.

They are saying that it will be warmer tomorrow, 91 here in Orland, N CA. It looks like it will be going back to normal, whatever that is.

It's been warmer the last two days up here near Wrightwood. And we had rain last night! Lots of it, and thunder and lightening. What a show! Everything smells so delish this morning.

Finally sunny. 78 today and tomorrow supposed to be 86 with temps in high 70-80 for rest of the week into next week. I hope it helps my veggie garden along.

Boohoo. Sun is coming. It's been a great run of cool weather for those of us in hot inland valleys. The cool weather extended my bloom season by almost a month. I still have irises!

It's supposed to get into the 90s this weekend.

I guess I'll go indoors until October.

Temps are about 20 degrees warmer today then yesterday,and for another day...then cool again. The heatwaves this summer are going to be hard fought.

Climate Prediction Center outlooks are now available for July, August & September. So. Calif. is expected to have above-normal temps, but the immediate coastal strip of central and no.Calif. should be near normal. An enhanced monsoon season is expected for eastern AZ and all of NM, so I suspect (a personal guess) that a more-than-usual amount of humidity and thunderstorms may spill into so.Calif.

I read recently they think El Nino is forming.

The language is that conditions are favorable for development of El Nino. The CPC is forecasting above-normal precip for so.Calif. this coming winter, but that's a long way out.

They showed it bigger than 2 months ago!!!

If it is an el nino year, doesn't Nor Cal get alot of rain too? I think that means less freezing days, right? It will still be very cold, so I'll have to cover up my coconut palm.

We usually gets lots of rain up here in the Sacramento Valley during El Nino years. Sometimes to the point of flooding. We really do need the water to refill all the lakes and replenish what was taken to send down south.

The latest CPC outlooks have normal precip for central & no.Calif. this coming winter. They're probably trying to be cautious about the strength of the anticipated El Nino. I wouldn't worry about it right now. It's a long way off.

I wouldn't consider this coming winter as a long way out since it is the "next" winter.
Those of us in extreme high fire or brush areas need to be thinking about this and fire prevention a little more.
If the Pacific does continue warming and El Nino does form it could be trouble after a fire with bare slopes.
I would rather be prepared and safe than sorry.

I dunno, I don't mind it being a little cooler. Lets me get some more plants in the ground and get established before the "real" heat sets in.

I actually appreciated the colder winter we had this last winter (even though we had a warm spell in January that made my rudebeckia herbstonnes bloom in February) because my mature Western redbud (Cercis occidentalis) bloomed heavily for the first time in years (which the hummingbirds appreciated). They're known for not blooming heavily near the coast like I am because the weather is too moderate. So the cold weather was a welcome change, IMO.

As fas as memory "El Nino" has only had one huge year in Nor Cal..that one year has lead to -I think-the whole El Nino hysteria. Hayward had an unworldy near 30" of rain or more(we outdid Seattle that year)...and of course soucal that year was always in the news with mud slides. 1999? it was the late 90's. Other than that, El Nino has been tenuous on fog or temperatures..they never say for sure its too blame.

A single weather event can rarely be tied to El Nino, La Nina, global warming, or anything else. But, historically, El Nino winters have usually been wetter in Calif. than non-El Nino winters. This is observable over many decades. And strong El Nino conditions usually yield wetter winters than weak El Ninos. It's not 100%, but the tendency is there.

As to whether the next winter is a "long way off," I'm actually a bit surprised that the CPC has issued a definite vote for more precip this far in advance.
