Look what I found......... (pics)

hiding out underneath a piece of driftwood by my garden pond. It was about 7 am and he was hanging out, just waiting for the temp to warm up so he could start flying and feeding, I guess. This is the first Monarch I've seen in my garden this summer.

Here he is hiding out.

Nice pictures, but it is a Viceroy that is hiding under your driftwood. You can tell by the black line running through the hindwing. The Monarch does not have this line.

And the tree still has leaves? hmm.. I've done it only during the dormant season because I thought it would be the least traumatic for the tree. It's like operating on a person without anesthesia and with anesthesia. I tried it during growing season and I think it pretty much ruined the tree so I gave it up. It was so damn weak and couldn't stand up so you can see why I'm hesitant to try that again from now on.

Thank you everyone! I surely will post a pic when it blooms and start to turn pink! I can't wait to see these supposedly dual color panicles! BTW, since I bought this unexpectedly, I will need to completely re-think my paniculata flower bed and move my Sambucus Black Lace and Little Lamb to make room for this beauty! Is it OK to transplant them in September, or should I wait until the spring?

Now that you mention it - we have a set of cardinals - have been seeing the male for several weeks but just saw the female last week for the 1st time! I noticed the male when I heard an unfamiliar tune from the roof and there he sat - been watching him since. I wish I new where there nest was - I have to google some images to see what the adolecents look like. Thanks so much! I have to ask - do you make soap?...I love your ID/name!

So I started playing with the Lucite a bit after getting it separated in shapes. I've had this bowl for years, and never knew what to do with it. It measures 22 inches across, and is 1/2 thick. Start of what looks like a moth or butterfly of some sort. Thank you all for your ideas, and comments.

Oh darn, I just knew it was a Monarch...well what ever it was, it was very pretty and a nice surprise waiting for me when I first went out into my garden this morning. :)

Jan, don't be dissapointed...Viceroys are much less common than Monarchs..at least here in CT. Nice find!

Congrats, and I agree with Maryann. I've been seeing plenty of Monarchs here since starting my butterfly garden a few years ago, but I have yet to see a Viceroy.

Jan, this is SO COOL! I've never seen a Viceroy. ...Or maybe I have and thought it was a Monarch. Anyway, these are great pics, and you can add Viceroy to your list.

Do you have willow trees? That's the host plant. Your Viceroy is quite a beauty and looks newly eclosed. Congratulations on a great find.

I learned something ... until I saw this pic, I never noticed the white markings just inside the black line on the underside hindwing.

Sandy, I have a weeping willow and the Viceroy was on the drift wood which is right beneath the willow tree. :) So, I've learned something too. Maybe there are more. I'm going out early in the morning and see if there's any more of them. That would be neat. Thanks for the info Sandy.
