It looks pretty happy to me! Most leaf succulents, when grown in the sun, will take on varying shades of red. In habitat, they usually end up completely red. Personally, I really enjoy the reds and try to bring them out in all of my plants. Here is my Aloe brevifolia, which gets full sun and minimal water here in Los Angeles.

Hmmmmm, it was as green as could be a couple of weeks ago and I haven't moved it....maybe it's just the current path of the sun, and it's getting more exposure.

Water will affect the color too, although maybe not as drastically as the sun. More water, more green. Less water, more red.

Anyway, the terrific inflorescence shows that your Aloe is quite satisfied with its recent care. Unless you are miles from the water, Aloes can easily take *full* sun here in So Cal once properly acclimated. I personally think lots of coloration, dead leaves, and dead tips look better than greenhouse-pampered perfection.

Is your potting media all pottery shards, or is there something under it? If all pottery, how often do you fertilize and water?

No, my potting material is generally 1 part organic compost to anywhere between 1 and 4 parts drainage material. For Aloes, I go about 1:3. Mt very favorite drainage material is pea-sized cinder (lava rock gravel). I like it better than pumice as it is far cheaper and doesn't retain as much water. A local landscaping materials company near me sells 1.5 cubic foot bags for about $8. It's a great deal!

In this particular case, I went too long between repotting jobs. The Aloe completely wedged itself into the pot trying to spread its roots, but I really liked its proportions in the smaller pot. So I figured what the hell, and just broke off the bottom 1/2" of the smaller pot, and stuck it in a larger pot full of soil! I thought all of the broken terra cotta was pretty cool, so I filled in all the empty space in the two pots with a third sacrifical pot.

In a few years, I really hope to have some pups emerging from around the smaller pot through the shards. It will be sort of a cascading Aloes effect. Then it will be time to repeat the whole process and make a three pot stack!

Mine looks exactly like that down to the spent flower spikes. I don't think y'all have had any freezes recently. I know that mine gets dried up on the ends sometimes after they get too cold during the winter, or at least that is what I thought was causing it. Your idea about the sun changing directions makes a lot of sense though. They green up a bit as the sun is not so high in the sky and then turn more reddish orange on the tips as we approach summer. By the end of summer, all of the tips will be red. I have some haworthia that are completely red now when they were green when I bought them three years ago. Those don't change back and forth the way my aloe does.

If you want pups on your aloe,joscience, I think you might have to go to the larger pot. I like mine in the smaller pots too, but they reached a point where they weren't thriving anymore. When I potted up, many of my plants went crazy sending off shoots and pups. I have some aloe in the ground that gets a lot more water than my potted one. It started as 4 plants 1 1/2 years ago and is now over 40 plants. I think the roots need room to spread and more water to really reproduce. That was just a deduction I made from my experience though.

I thought it was from over-wintering, as the leaves are starting to green up and thicken again now that the sun is good. I was tempted to trim off the tips, but they're swelling with life thankfully.
