OT- Lost Bull Frog

Yesterday evening while adding a air cushion to the well tanks there is this bull frog. He is sitting under a pipe that drips.

A few questions can bull frogs live without a pond?

Could he just be passing through?

I love my frogs but never had a bull frog show up. He is about 8" long sitting. Do I relocate him if he decides to stay around or make him a little pond.

Make him a little pond, lol. I have lots of bullfrogs just in my little bitty pond. I have tadpoles now too. They are so cute. My husband is amazed and the frogs and toads and wonders where they come from too, lol. Make sure you put something on the edge for him to climb out though. I saw one clinging to the lotus leaf for a couple of days before I realized he couldn't get out, lol. I put a brick against the edge for a ramp.

I love my Frogs.. We have loads of Toads,Tree and Bull Frogs.. Most mornings I get up to bull frogs in the dogs water...LOL and I have some that hang out in the potted plants.. They don't dig in like those damn toads do...I would leave him be he knows where he wants to live... Very cool!!!

You undoubtedly got your information from the following website: www.californiaherps.com This is an excellent resource, and I know some of the people who have put that whole thing together. You obviously didn't look at the species list closely enough, as you will see that the southern leopard frog (Rana utricularia) is an INTRODUCED species - that means it is not native and doesn't belong there! While northern leopard frogs once had a few spots in northerneastern California where they were present, it is likely that they are EXTIRPATED (that means they are gone) from the state now, as it also says on that site and if you actually took the time to read scientific journals (as I do) you'll see that repeated efforts to find relict populations have failed. Also, you'll notice that northern leopard frogs never ranged into Central california, where you say you live...so again, that goes back to my saying you shouldn't be bringing in nonnative or nonlocal species. Obviously you didn't read my original post - do you really think that a northern leopard frog (or leopard toad, as you put it, haha) with its origins in North Carolina would survive in your region? I doubt it...not to mention the fact that it is ILLEGAL. You tried using the word "indigenous" as well - you have to use that word with some measure of scale - there are lots of anurans indigenous to California - but how about YOUR LOCAL area? I guess by your rules, you could take a Couch's spadefoot toad from extreme southeastern CA and put it in your pond...because its indigenous to California, right? Or maybe a Green Treefrog (Hyla cinerea), because they are indigenous to the United State, and they sure are pretty! Again, do your research, and if you're too lazy to go find some construction sites or golf courses nearby you, then tough luck. Hey there Miss Basilbird. I'm sorry I missed this thread last year if only because I missed saying 'Hey' to Laurazone5. Her posts are always interesting and full of usable information and she is a very nice person. That is not to say the rest of you are not nice people, too. Most of the people on this forum are good folks. LOL! I was able to acquire 10 frogs shortly before I broke my back and I distributed them in three separate parts of the yard. I haven't seen any of them but I know they are around because I heard them all summer long this year. I made the people who collected the leaves put some of them in strategic parts of the yard in case the froggies needed bedrooms so my neglect shouldn't be a disaster. DH hasn't noticed the leaves yet. I have had greenhouses of various types over the years and the interesting thing is that while I have had them damaged by the wind they have never been damaged by snow loads. The reason is that so long as the cover is reasonably tight the warmer air on the inside melts a thin layer of snow so the load is floating on a thin layer of snowmelt (water) and that allows the snow to follow the pull of gravity. It slides off before it can break through. I admit being a nervous wreck the first time my glass and aluminum greenhouse was subjected to a blizzard in Wisconsin but my fears were proved groundless. That is not to say that it is not possible, it just isn't very likely unless you built the greenhouse under the edge of the roof where there is a dropoff. The last time I tried to pull up Greg's website it did not have anything on it about his various designs although it did talk about his growing business. I was glad to see his success but now I can't send anyone to his site about the floating light bulb deicer. I am glad I bought one of his CDs when they were available. I made a deicer similar in concept to his and would be happy to tell anyone how it was made just so everyone knows it is a variation on a theme. I don't want to pass on a patented design if Greg managed to register it. I have my doubts that he was able to since I am sure I have seen similar contraptions used over the years. Mine certainly isn't as pretty as Greg's was but I didn't have the materials that he used at hand so I had to improvise my way around the construction much the way he did. In the end, I think the only similarity is we both used a light bulb as a heat source. I wish I could see the video you made. I'm going to see if I can find someone with an Apple. I still think your pond is great. I do think Laura is mistaken about the ledge being only a conductor rather than a collector of heat. So long as it is not totally engulfed by frozen ground it is a heat sink and will act as a collector of heat during any clear day and release heat at night. Even on cloudy days it is likely to be collecting heat from the ground below the frost line. The subject of heat sinks in construction is well documented. We became interested when we built our Earth Shelter house in Wisconsin. The river rock floor and the brick backwall in our greenhouse collected and retained heat that was released at night. It wasn't what you would call hot but it could be measured. I could never convince DH that we should put the cash into insulation for the greenhouse. It would have been much more effective. Sandy

Thanks Susan. I could do most of it but he freaks out if I do anything without him, lol. Patty would come over and help me but I think he wants to say that we built it ourselves so doen't want help but doesn't want to take much fishing time away either, lol. He is going to have to get on the ball because the really cold weather is coming and I really need the room to start seeds. Here is a pic of Polly or bully we are argueing over the name of course, lol. I am not sure yet if he is a bullfrog and I did see that they will eat small goldfish but mine are pretty big so hopefully he will leave them alone. I took him out of the fishbowl and put him in hubby's tropical aquarium, lol. He is gonna love that when he wakes up but there wasn't enough room in there for him. I'll look on craigslist and see if I can find a used tank to make him his own little habitat since I found out on the pond forum alot of peoples tadpoles that weren't through changing died when the weather changed from hot to cold suddenly like ours does. He is so cute. Hope he doesn't make Johns fish sick or anything until I can find him a house of his own.

That's absolutely darling ( and going to be a bitch to keep clean). I have a pic of a gorgeous, giant ginko leaf vessel sink. I was thinking maybe that was from the same people, but probably not. Let me give you a metal cleaning tip that might help you with this. If you soak metal in sudsy ammonia, it gets all the gunk and tarnish out of the cracks and crevices. Particularly nice when someone has gunked up their jewelry trying to clean it with toothpaste. I'd plan to take this out every so often and just pop it into a jar for a bit. Screw it back on. This cleaning tip, courtesy of some jeweler back in the 70s, works on everything but brass and copper (discolors both,) pearls and opals. I think this is absolutely adorable. I can't imagine how much cat fur would wrap around that cutie from my Waylon wanting to drink out of the faucet.

He'll find water when he needs it. Bullfrogs are cool but they are also pretty serious predators and will eat absolutely anything that will fit into their mouths. They can wipe out a pond of all the smaller frogs, fish, even small birds and mammals.

What a oool pic. I saw tadpoles in my pond yesterday and got so excited, lol. I didn't know toads eat fish. I wonder if thats whats happening to my goldfish? Uh, oh. I love them because they eat bugs. Didn't think about the little mosquitoe fish and the goldfish. My silver and black one jumped out last night. Stupid fish. Boohoo. Jim you can just dig him out a little mud hole under that drip and he will probably hang out there. You could put a broken pot upside down beside it for him to get in the shade. I have had the same one in my lotus pot since right after I put it in and its just mud with some water on top.

Cool. I wish I had praying mantis. I haven't seen any this year. They look like ET, lol. Keep those Bambi's up the hill so they don't eat my plants at the shop, lol. They did a good pruning job on the rose bush though. It bloomed like crazy after they grazed on it.

I know it is very hard to see. The zoom is missing. That is why I want a new camera for my birthday. boy then I really can take nicer pictures and the color will be a lot better too.

Kristy I found another baby praying mantis while watering tonight. Same size but diffrent coloring. Last year I had a huge one. Not knowing what it was I was scared at first. Those bugeyes lol. But my son told me right away that it is a good bug. Then he says everything is good. lol He does not harm a fly. Still wondering why I do not do anything about the BAD bugs like the lotuses etc.
