June Gloom and SoCal tomatoes

Hi all,

I've been lurking and learning, and now I need some advice. I tried several years ago to grow tomatoes, and had both foliage/disease problems (powdery mildew? blight?) and pest problems (hornworms/cabbage loopers?). I only had a couple of plants and they were planted in the ground. Miserable experience. Chalked it up to the gloom.

I am trying tomatoes again this year, but I planted in containers. My four plants seemed to be doing well during this streak of sunny warm weather we were having, but now with the gloom setting in again, I'm wondering what to expect. And how to best prevent any disease problems that might crop up (I noticed some caterpillar eggs on one of my plants the other day, but I bought some Bt powder and am monitoring the bird activity, so I think I'm good there).

Any input from SoCal tomato growers would be much appreciated. I've learned so much from this website!

Michelle
