An experiment to appease my curiosity.

There has been some thought in the past that seeds winter sown in the DEAD cold of our Canadian winters would not produce/germinate/etc. Basically, in going from the nice warm temps of our kitchens at +20c out into the frigid temps of more than -20C would affect the embryo and so the seeds would 'die'.

So this year I've decided that I will experiment with some seeds which were gathered in my gardens. I will be sowing them in the same kinds of containers, same sowing medium, same everything. The only difference will be what the temperature is outside on the days they are sown on. In the next few days, the temperature is expected to hover from -5C to +8C, so I will sow some containers over the weekend.

I expect that cold front that all other Canadians are experiencing at this moment to move into Nova Scotia about mid-week in the week coming up and will sow more of the same seeds when the temps reach that drasted frigid cold. Brrrrr... I'll probably do a few more of these sowings in February - some on warm days, others on those COLD days.

It should be interesting to see the results, eh?

IÂve wrestled with this idea every year that I put out pots into an unheated greenhouse. The seeds, sown in Promix and some in vermiculite, have no snow cover, just their plastic bags. I choose mostly those seeds that need a cold period; some (seeds) actually need a freeze to stimulate the embryo into action. With hybrid seeds, it a guessing game.
The seeds that are closer to the half hardy annual types I wait for March 1st. But for some that might be too late.

So far I have + or - 50 pots outside in temperatures so far that have seen Â6 to +12 Celsius degrees until last evening when temps dipped to Â13C. I hope that the seeds have been acclimatized and have taken up water by now. (Actually I keep sown pots inside for two or three days before putting them out so as to soak up water.)

I have tallied, in past years, a percentage of germination of wintersown seeds and IÂm pleased with the results of 65%. But I have to refine my technique perhaps IÂve had too much water are not enough cover or too much cover of Promix or sand.
Every year I am surprised as to what varieties will withstand cold but then again I have not tested tomatoes or petunias etc. etc. Tomatoes will sprout eventually. They do so in my garden compost!

Very interesting experiment, Tiffy. Actually I never thought about that. I always thought that seeds had enough 'sense' to know when to 'stay put', but in reviewing my notes, I now realize that I never really sowed anything in the 'dead' of winter. I have usually started in Feb. and we have had pretty mild winters the last several years. The only 'disasters' I have had was with roses, which I planted at Winter Solstice last year (as Don had done) and NOTHING sprouted. I know that roses may be difficult, but these were Rugosas whose seeds I collected myself. So your results will be very interesting. I will soon be starting my sowing and we have had a particularly cold winter here in Ontario - the last 24 hours has thrown everything at us, and is still in progress. I am doing a little experiment myself with another gardener regarding tomatoes. I must find a way to get my tomatoes sown 'outside'and get tomatoes in a decent time frame. We'll have to compare notes.

lmao poo! i swear sometimes that i have a tail and it is all bristled out :) they always happen when you are "away." papers sliding off bulletin boards and down walls get me, even. i just love your stretching style! last year, i heard the great horned every night all night with h/her screech. at times i would see that great wing span in the shadows going to or from the light poles. as winter was coming i became almost hollow thinking how used to hearing it i had become and how i would miss it. then, there it was one day, i think i heard it in the winter still. i said, in my mind, "hello friend. glad to hear from you, even if only a great once in awhile." as spring came and even now, it is out there, hunting the same areas in close proximity still to the building i work in. when it isn't there, it is like a light is burned out and you can't figure out what is missing or different. brenda, first lets get one thing perfectly clear! i wasn't sniffing it. honest. the smell easily wafted up to my face. :) you have been officially snuffed off by a doe. sort of like, ha, i am upper class. get back across the tracks, fiend. don't you just love those foot stomps? back to the toad pellet, or whatever they are called. i believe, though do not know, that it came out the anterior end, but looked like poopy all the same. my current experience with cicadas are having headless ones on my patio. i know how that sudden rattling sound stimulates the feline prowess, but what is it with cats and heads? i wonder if a cat attacked that one california store. hmmmmm. other than protecting yourself from an occassional, though not likely, collision with a cicada, or wondering what keeps hitting the windows so you go to bed with a flashlight and a cleaver, the most i have experienced was a mind numbing buzz in my ears from the deafening song. that was the precursor to the lunacy the constant buzzing would cause. here's a wild looking cicada. we don't have those here. i was looking for the black with the red eyes when i found this page. those are further down, along with an interesting zuni legend. We bought a new computer, and asked Circuit City to 'get it ready" for us. That was so smart because they were able to fix and adjust it, and we were not required to call India for trial and error solutions. We needed Microsoft since my school has it. If I want to send a "word" document to my school mail, I need to save it as 2003 (or something like that), and my school program will accept it. The email will read Vista, but if I try to save it, it will not save correctly. In other words if I want to print off my vocabulary list for the student quizzes at school, I can send it through the email, and print it, but if I try to save it to the school's "my documents" it will not recognize Vista. Vista will recognize anything, but the school's XP won't accept Vista. That is not a huge problem.I don't know if I think Vista is working well, or if it is the new computer, but I have had few problems. We do have Linskey (router), and had to buy a new one, but we expected that. I hope you get everything worked out ok. SAmmy

First of all, Thank You All, for your rapid and referenced responses! I posted the topic, went out for a quick dinner, and came back to a filled mailbox! Gosh sakes, I've been busy! Looking at orchids (so what better to do on New Year's Eve?) on Bedford's and Norman's and google image, and just getting the most terrible Wants! After looking at the prices, I've also had a lot of misgivings about having tossed that orange Phal :( Mehitabel, no apologies...and for goodness sakes don't ever stop posting. I can eliminate Panang Girl and Princess Kaiulani because of their elongated flower shape, but the Bedford gallery picture of Brother Sara Gold 'Sogo F623' has just the right shape. The color is also close, but I don't remember any magenta, spots, or reticulation--though memory can be tricky. Terpguy and Brooke, Asconopsis irene dobkins is so close, but looks like it has a wand-like spike; however the Irene Dobkins hybrid, Ascps. Jiaho's Orange 'Jiaho' (Irene Dobkin 'Orange Delight' AM/AOS x Phal. Zuma's Pixie) is exactly the color I remember. The spike on my plant was odd looking, with branching at almost 90 degree angles. Each of you has provided a good piece of the puzzle to put me on the track of this plant. Thank you all so much for taking the time to help me figure it out. Oh and the yellow-belly superintendent who hid from us during the above post of mine is now one of our State Senators. So now we have a lying self-serving representative who used "for the children" (NOT) as a political springboard. Lying scum. We need to get politics out of our schools. Teachers and parents used to do a great job in the past (pre 60's) without a dozen school administrators breathing down their necks. One principal per school and several students counselors were the norm. Now it's more like 5 or 6 principals, vice principals and associates, several assistants and one student counselor per hundreds of students, many who never even get to see their counselor in 4 years of high school. We need to get rid of the NEA, and get government out of education and make teaching an honored profession again with parental oversite. Involved parents know who the good teachers are. Politics allows the bad apples to stay. From bad teacher to bad administrator.

Last year I held off until the end of February to sow. I found I had much more success with germination with the perennials and hardy annuals. From my previous experience (newbie just throwing anything out there in January), I found that most of the early sown seeds got waterlogged and rotted by March.

Kinda disappointing, because I lost a lot of 'choice' Datura seeds, (different than white..which reseed with regularity).

I've found that most of the containers I dump, covered in mould and green slime, were sown in December (solstice) and January.

Maybe it's the peculiarities of our own little spots in this huge country..I have a cold February, and wet, dark March.

I'm trying Tiff's experiment too..resowing the same seeds I've put out in January at the end of February..just to see what the germ is like come spring.

No brainer for me..the bottles furthest away from the deck are the most recently sowed. (Now that's a scientific method!) ;0)
