'Poinsettia niche' spotted in Berkeley

I thought San Diego was kind of borderline for Poinsettias in the ground outdoors and unprotected. That is, you occasionally see some alive and with some size to it in Zone 24 near the ocean. However I am zone 23/24 and can't seem to be able to keep one alive outdoors.

So imagine how surprised I was to visit Berkeley CA, 400 miles north and see a good sized one growing outside. Granted it was right next to the house, but still....

Also saw some Heliconias and a Kentia palm in Berkeley. Also Proteas. many Bromeliads. In fact, right now I'm not sure if there's anything that grows here in San Diego they can't grow there. Yet I *know* it's generally a cooler clime there.

There's always more to learn about gardening.

Regards,

Rick Clark
