where to buy uncommon trees in the Bay Area?

Hi,

I'm looking to buy some birch trees, a Dogwood (Cloud 9 Cornus florida) and would love to browse other trees that aren't normally sold at a Home Depot-type store. What is your favorite bay area (I'm in contra costa county) tree vendor?

For the type of trees you want, Berkeley Horticultural Nursery is probably the closest. Orchard's in Lafayette is farther away, but has that sort of thing too.

Urban Tree Farm in Sonoma County has good and unusual trees.

Hi Cori - I planted Twilight Zone last spring and I'm seeing the first flush start for the first time. The blooms are lovely. But before you rush out and buy that standard, read on. I'm seeing that this rose doesn't have that many canes. The canes that are there have a lot of these star burst bud clusters. I'm not sure this type of growth habit makes the best tree standard. To have a nice shape, I think it's better to have lots of flowering branches, top to bottom rather than just a few canes with tons of flowers. Typically I think floribundas and shrubs are better for standards rather than hybrid teas and grandifloras like TZ. So don't be sad - I think you made the right decision! Ann

@Nick can I get a link to that nursery's website? Can I see a photo of what the material looks like out of the bag? Do you need to filter at all? There are many rockeries around here that sell fir bark by the cubic yard, but it is either too large or includes fines. The amount of work I would need to do on it far exceeds the extra cost I am paying for a pre-filtered product

In BErkeley, East Bay Nursery is best known for the trees they carry. They maybe able to help you order of suggest another place. Closed Sun/Mon.

If you live in Contra Costa County, take a trip to Orchard Nursery in Lafayette. You may not see what you want but the staff is very happy to try to locate unusual plants for you. I have been doing this for 20 years. Berkeley Hort carries a nice stock but they are often arrogant and unwilling to help you in your quest for the unusual. There seems to be a philosophy that they determine what's unusual or cool and stock it in their nursery. In addition, their prices are high. There is a tiny nursery in Moraga that has a very experienced nurseryman (and plant propagator) who might know the best sources for your trees. I believe the name is simply Moraga Nursery.
