My most beautiful canna this year!

AS most of you know I love cannas and have begged all of you for starts of any that you might have to plant along my paths and trails.

Well several months ago this lady on here who's name starts with an E sent me some of hers. Some of the ones I'm enjoying the most right now are the Luck's Wonder, and Stugutt (sp?)(green and white variegated).

It would be very difficult for me to choose which one of these two are my favorite. I love all the bright colors in the L.W.'s leaves. But the uniqueness in the green and white leaves of the other is devine.

I'm so thrilled with the E. flowerbed I'm beside myself. I also planted daylilies and bright pink pom pom zinnias in that bed. The colors blend together very nicely and add alot of interest to the bed. Thanks again, Miss E. for all your lovely cannas.

I just got some dwarf pink ones and they are blooming. They have really pretty flowers. I need to take some pics of them.

I just got some mixed cannas from HD a bit ago, only a few are coming up so far, but I am so happy that the few that ARE coming up are variegated! yeah!! 3 green & whites and 1 that has red & green! I have to try and figure out which ones they are when they bloom. I didn't overwinter mine inside well last year, so I think I'm gonna try and keep them in the ground with lotsa mulch next time.

Marian, you still can't figure out the photobucket problem? Come on, we wanna see some pix :)

How tall is your chaste tree Dan. It certainly will be nice when mine grows tall enough for someone to find they can sit underneath it's shade in a chair. For you, all that steady humm of those bee's buzzing, must have been very relaxing. Glad your bees were calm enough while feeding, to not sting you. After this growing season, I plan to prune my larger chaste tree so that it will once again have only 2 or at the most 3 trunks. That way it should once again take on the form of a small tree instead of the bush it now resembles due to how far its outer leaning trunks have grown to spread.

This year pink beauty, red stripe, cleopatra, tropicana, Richard Wallace, Cherry Red, City of Portland, Princess Di, China Doll, Lippo, Tropical Sunrise, Primrose Yellow and about 5 or 6 more that I'll have to wait on blooms to see since the labels faded and I can't remember what was there. I love them all but my favorites are the ones with striped or dark foliage. Nancy

All I can say is AWESOME as always Kevin. Your entire place always looks like a post card. I'm emailing you a link to some of my photos, of course my place doesn't look anything like yours. For some reason my cannas all looked rather sickly this year. I think that it probably had something to do with my butterfly gardens and those darn leaf rollers on the cannas. Boy they can sure play havic with your cannas in just a couple of days. I think I still owe you some plants but I don't want to send anyone anything that might not be HEALTHY. I too have castor bean trees mixed in with my cannas. I may have to talk you out of a handful of your seeds. I have no ideal what mine are called, I just know they have a reddish purple cast that looks matalic or something another. Maybe I can find one of those photos to share with you. If you would like some of my castor bean tree seeds I should have plenty in a couple of weeks as mine are covered in blooms right now as are my dutchmans pipe vines. Let me know if you want seeds from either one. You might recall I don't know how to post photos on the gardening pages. I wish I could, but I'm too old and absent minded to learn. I am not sure if the author in the article below succeeded in capturing the essence of Monet. What do you think? Regardless I thought the idea of dedicating a 4x4 foot plot to create a canvas was a fun idea. Wouldn't it be fun for forum members to create a canvas with a mutually agreed theme and then share our individual outcomes. Four Hundred and fifty dollars for an instant garden is a ridiculous amount of cash but if we started planning now for next spring/summer winter sowing, dividing, and swaps could make the cost minimal. I planted about 20 cannas but they've barely come up. I think that maybe I planted them too deep. How deep are they supposed to be planted? Please tell me that they aren't supposed to be planted like iris or peonies : 0

Isn't Edna a sweetie? She sent me Stuttgard too. It's the only Canna I have, I love the leaves.

Karyn, I've read anywhere from 1" to 6", but I plant mine aprox 1.5"-2" under. Didn't have any probs last year with them tipping or needing staking, even with some really big winds. My tallest was a lil over 6'. That was in dry ground though. I guess if you put them in a boggy area they may need to be a lil deeper?
If you plant them too deep, they may rot.

I planted mine pretty shallow maybe a couple inches deep. Not as shallow as irises where the top was showing but just a little deeper. I was afraid they would rot too and didn't have any problem with my ones in pots. I figure if they aren't too deep and I have to dig them up when they try to take over the world it will be easier, lol. I think I am going to make the little fence bigger and put my dwarf ones on either side of the little lotus pond by the lady statue.

Karyn, I just barely cover the bulbs. Sometimes I leave little sections sticking out if they are too big. They will probably be just fine if you planted them a little deeper. They will just take longer to start growing, but once they do they should take off.

Now with that said I'm in a much warmer zone and we don't have to dig them babies here. Thanks goodness because if we did, I'm afraid I wouldn't have ANY.

I was going to order some from Horns but by the time I got to looking at the price list again, they were already sold out for the season. You can't beat getting them for $1.50- $2.75 each. There have several I'd like to have about 5 of 6 of each one. I tend to like to plant or have masses of the same color ect. in different spots with maybe some contrasting dwarfs in front of them.

Maybe I should dig them up and replant. I think they are all about 6" under the soil.

Karyn, 6" is way too deep. Dig them up quick.
