Hi, I have quite a nice variety of cannas to trade, Florence Vaughn, Ambassador, Richard Wallace, Black night, Tropicana, Tropical yellow, Boa Canna, Pretoria, Yellow King Humbert, Crimson Beauty, Rosemonde Cole, Tall White Ermine or New White (i'm not sure)plus different salmon and pink, rather small,etc. Not being sure of the latter, I can send pics. Joe-my experience with cannas is that they should come up in a few weeks and by next year be prepared to thin out and share with friends for the rest of your life! Cannas love it here in Zone 8 and thrive and spread. I don't feed mine (except an occasional all garden Miracle Gro spray) or dig them up at the end of the season. Just lots of water. Right now in my small military yard I probably have 200 coming up--who needs a privacy fence-lol! Enjoy them-they are beautiful plants and survive past the growing season.

Plant canna bulbs at a fairly shallow depth. I'm sure there are lots of opinions on this, but for me, about an inch of soil above the rhyzome works. As for you, just plant the rhyzome at the correct depth. There are buds on the rhyzome that will eventually turn into plant stems. Keep those underground with the rest of the rhyzome. Now obviously, if the bud has grown and created a small stem, then by all means, have the vertical stem coming out of the ground. In the end, just make sure the entire rhyzome is under ground. Great plant the canna. Even if you mis-plant it. Chances are it will grow just fine.

Karyn, I just barely cover the bulbs. Sometimes I leave little sections sticking out if they are too big. They will probably be just fine if you planted them a little deeper. They will just take longer to start growing, but once they do they should take off. Now with that said I'm in a much warmer zone and we don't have to dig them babies here. Thanks goodness because if we did, I'm afraid I wouldn't have ANY. I was going to order some from Horns but by the time I got to looking at the price list again, they were already sold out for the season. You can't beat getting them for $1.50- $2.75 each. There have several I'd like to have about 5 of 6 of each one. I tend to like to plant or have masses of the same color ect. in different spots with maybe some contrasting dwarfs in front of them.
