Beneficial Nematodes

Animals are having their young now and are out looking for food and shelter so we will be seeing a few now and then. They are looking for grubs and at the same time will destroy our gardens digging for the grubs. This is where the nematodes can go deep into the soil to get rid of all unwanted guests.

Now? I've been at war with the skunks all winter and spring as I plant my seedlings and they shred entire sections of my beds. I've tried humane trapping and disincentives and have finally realized I'm going to have to spread nematodes over every inch of my yard or live with the damage.

So can someone experienced tell me how to calculate the application rate and how many times the nematodes would need to be applied? Any good sources in the South Bay region of L.A.?

Though I've never used nematodes to try and get rid of thrips, I have used them to try and get rid of japanese beetles. What I discovered is fewer grubs in my garden but still as many on my plants. The problem with the beetles and thrips is they can fly. When I did research on how to get rid of thrips I found information on insects that eat them. One such insect that is easily recognizable is the pirate bug. We were infested with thrips, so much so that I found 30+ on EACH daylilly flower (not plant, flower) and we have hundreds! My new roses couldn't bloom at all, especially my Moonlight Magic, Stainless Steel, and Neptune. I had to clip all the buds as they were so damaged by thrips I was concerned about the health of the plants (ironic how I was more concerned about aphids before this). After reading about the thrip-eating bugs I decided to see if I could find any on the daylillies. I found one pirate bug and it was enough to convince me to wait and see for a few weeks. 5 days later and two of my roses have bloomed today. I inspected them for thrips and found 2-3... and a pirate bug. Pirate bugs are my roses new best friends and I, at last, can enjoy some blooms! They haven't yet finished up the population on the daylillies, but I haven't given them much time, either. If you decide not to get the nematodes you should consider predatory insects.

We tried nematodes several years ago to handle an annoying fungus gnat problem with our house plants. First of all there is a shelf-life as nematodes are living creatures so you need to purchase from a source with high turn-over or ships direct. Bottom line is the application of nematodes to our house plants did drastically reduce the fungus gnat population after a couple of weeks but one should note it doesn't entirely eliminate them. After a few weeks there is a balance that's struck (as in all eco-systems) that hopefully one finds they can tolerate. We made it through winter putting up with the few that would never quite go away. In the end, we put all the plants outside in early spring. Then repotted each in fresh, sterilized potting soil, sprayed with a product called Eight, every few days for a couple weeks while they sat in the garage then finally brought them one-by-one back into the house. With house plants you do have options to try controlling the gnat population such as letting succulents dry out completely (breaks the fungus gnat life cycle) or put a tall layer of diatomaceous earth or perlite on top, or spray the plants and soil with Eight, and eschew most organic matter from the potting mix (especially peat)... however I don't believe any of these strategies would be viable within a worm bin. So the best strategy would be start over with the bin, keep it inside (in a dark basement or closet would be best) and maintain a thick layer of dry bedding material on top... even using a lid if necessary. Our experience with the house plants taught us that once fungus gnats get started there is no guaranteed fix to totally eradicate the gnat population short of starting over again.

I used the nematodes from Home Depot and from Gardens Alive, even looked under the microscope to see them wriggling around. I've noticed no difference in the grub population since they were applied several years ago, but I did see a couple last season that looked sick (I.e yellow and thin)...unless they were just a different kind of grub.

The simple answer is no. Nematodes, both good and bad, are a normal part of the Soil Food Web and share that environment with many other members of the group. kimmq is kimmsr
