Maybe not. Hope I'm not complaining too much but I still need some sympathy. It's been weeks since the Brugs started to sprout. The ones that were going to grow all started at the same time & then nothing at all from the rest of them. Here's what I had & the * is alive:

I figure it happened because I was busy being blind last year & didn't put anything on the roots right away. We just dug em & bagged the roots in plastic bags. They were watered a couple times before I got the peat put on them & it was dry & hard to wet. The electric also went off twice & I don't know how cold it got in the basement but I'm sure it didn't help. I cry every time I move them & see the tags, "Oh no, not fill-in-the-blank too!" I'll give them a couple more weeks until I get too disgusted over the dead sticks.

I planted everything else yesterday & the day before & I hope they grow fast so I can share cuttings from them this fall. The yard looks really empty compared to last year. The good news is that my first seedling to bloom is one of them that made it & I do still have some of my favorites.

I would love to be able to replace these but I'm afraid I won't be able to (no Brug budget this year). I am hoping someone who has several on my list will share cuttings & will send them together so I won't have to pay so much postage:

I'm sorry to hear you lost so much. I was in the same boat after this winter. Though most of what I lost were orchids. Surprisingly I still have brugs that I was sure were dead sending up some growth so don't toss everything out. Just put them somewhere out of sight so they aren't an eyesore and check the base of the stems every couple weeks. hopefully you'll have some surprises.

So sorry to hear of your loss... I'm going to be taking cuttings from my New Orleans Lady for a few folks on here, I'll be more than happy to take another one for you. Just shoot me a regular email, so I don't forget. I think that is the only one I have that's large enough to take cuttings from, that is also on your list.

I hear that. After several years of flooding in my back yard I dug my own forty foot ditch across the back and am filling it with pebbles for the dry river bed effect and so my toddler can't drown in it. I am amazed and pleased that it seems to be holding quite a bit of the water that runs through my place. I'll also say that mounding has done my garden a world of good and this spring I added a raised garden veg. bed. If you ever want to chat about horrible flooding and clay ohio springs email me. Also I am thrilled that your plants will pull through. I've found that even putting them up on a bench helps in the heavy rain so they can have some drainage through the containers.

I plan to continue to wintersow my annuals. I find that I am able to grow very unusual things that way, and in the volumes that I plant, it's much more economical. I just finished sowing my last seeds for the 2007 winter/spring sowing today, and won't be sowing more til probably July or so. I have a few things that require warm-cold-warm, and I will also be sowing flowering kale for the fall. This year, I have giant new beds to fill, so I went overboard again. I've done a lot of grasses and some shrubs and trees, including magnolia, kalmia, dogwood and laburnum. These are more experiments than anything else, but I found the Gardens North website through recommendations here on GW, adn had to try a bunch of stuff. I did purchase a bunch of seed this year, and realized how spoiled I've been by the traders here on GW. I found that T&M, Swallowtail Seeds, Select Seeds, and Pinetree are downright stingy on some of their selections - not all varieties, but I often found myself peering into the packet thinking "that's it?!"

Mike- I wish I could say that I was waiting on one of your boxes! What an awesome garden you must have- I can smell it from here! That was so sweet of you to help so many folks out! McClark, you're right -- it's not possible! I'm so not even close you'd laugh if you saw my house -- or maybe cry. Teeda, you're right, it's work to make sure just one picture is right for posting, and then post it. When you post a long line of them like that some interesting things can happen, like invariably it's in the middle somewhere that you posted the same one twice, or one is only showing up as an X. Then it can take you several minutes to figure out what went wrong and correct it. Plus it's hard for me not to lose my place at the slightest interruption. I'm getting better at this, though, I think. lol Everyone, thanks so much for the very kind words -- you've made my day! I'm glad to know I'm no longer the only one enjoying all those pretty pics. I hope you get inspiration and maybe a good idea or two from them. I know I'll be going back to that thread looking for ideas whether or not my home ends up cottage decorated. oh that's terrible :( I'd be crying too..

my tiny miss emily mackenzie I just bought from worldofbrugmansia (to replace the one I bought last year that arrived with mosaic virus) has an even tinier little sprout at the bottom - I'll pull it up and if it roots I'll send it!

Wow, did you have alot of cuttings over the winter. Sorry for any that you lost. I lost a good many, too. Was not a good winter for cuttings for quite a few of us!

I have some but they are still rooting for a few more weeks. If I don't email you, remind me with an email in a few weeks and we'll talk!!

Thanks Ryan (NOL) & Brenda.

The biggest part of the deceased weren't cuttings, they were full grown plants (sob!). Of the cuttings that I kept inside, I only lost a few due to missing watering a couple in the back & the ones that the cats knocked off that rolled under the table. I had a container of tall cuttings on the porch that actually had the bottoms frozen in a couple inches of ice (electric off). One just barely made it but was mushy & unhealthy looking so I trashed it. I lost all but the biggest plants there. I have threatened to just bring them all inside & put up lights in every room in the house next fall. We will all happily bask in artificial sun all winter (with the aphids & mites) LOL.

Linda in time you will get a lot of the lost angels back. I am sure of it. Everyone is right...it was a bad winter for a lot of us with cuttings AND full grown plants.

So maybe it is some comfort that you are not the only one having to replace a lot. Or who knows...maybe get NEW ones that you have not had before :-)

I will be crying soon also. I am just beginning to get an idea of my losses. However, mine were just cuttings.

I really wish I could replace some of yours, Linda.

I lost about 80% of the cuttings I got in trades because the heater kept kicking off in the house, and even when it was on we couldn't afford to use it much. turns out cuttings don't like constant temps just below 50 :\ who does. lol.

it pales hugely in comparison to your losses, but for what it's worth, I have an idea. the year before I lost like, 8 of my passies - most of my collection. sigh.

why are we even in this climate? lol. seriously.

hey ryan, are you open to trades for NOL? I just cut off a nice sport from my desiree and dug up one from my versi peach yesterday.

I'm so sorry, Linda! I don't have any of the ones you have listed except for Maya, but she's too small for me even. If you don't get it by the fall with other brugs, let me know & I'll send you a cutting.
