OMG! I think I'm done!

Been trying to find places in between my w/s perennials from last year to plant the 80+ containers that I w/s'd this year (despite expanding two beds and digging in two more last fall a la lasagne) and have found that I have TOO MUCH STUFF!

I ended up (today) mowing an unused corner of my lot, laid down newspaper, dumped all my 'dud' (i.e. 2 litres that didn't germinate) soil and mulch on it, and made a tout suite holding bed for all my duplications, and "I have no room for" sprouts.

Instead of trading seeds this winter and sowing, I'll be packaging and offering SASBE's. I am NOT digging any more beds. After three years of w/s, I have three packed borders, three free-form beds cut into the yard, all full-to-bursting with plants.

What a fantastic way to turn a grass only lawn into a colourful masterpeice!

All brand new homeowners should get a w/s kit from the welcome wagon!

Benn there, and here's where I went next:

Second stage: now, find things that don't work, or don't suit you for one reason or another and YANK! That's really fun too once you are able to emotionally do it. Have you tried that?

Third stage: grow for others if you are so inclined. Gather seeds for others if that floats your boat.

Fourth stage: experiment!

Yep, it's fewer containers, and different goals, but WS lives on!

After filling up beds I went vertical and planted all kinds of vines- you have to know how little space they take in the ground so you can stuff it. And clematis is such fun to grow form seed- it takes time but you get such variables.
Next stage is containers and planters- All those areas I can not fit a garden bed but bunch of "artfully" arranged containers does wonders...
Now I am looking at my roof ;)

I'm still waiting on a lot of stuff. But I'm quite a ways farther north and we are several weeks behind usual temp wise. So today, I finally went topless on a few containers that had sprouts growing out the tops :) I am very happy with my results so far. I've had a few single hollyhock sprouts, lots of red poppies and several sweet peas. All of which were from very old seed (8+ years old). I messed up marking my annual ws containers though. Marked them with numbers right on the jug with sharpie and the numbers have all faded. Woops! Oh well, at least they are all annuals so I'll just use them to fill in wherever in my perennial beds anyways. Live and learn. Sharpie on the duct tape seemed to work pretty well for my perennial containers. Only have one of 80 that the duct tape has fallen off. I'm sure once I start moving some things around I'll find that label too :) I think I have about 30-40% germination rate so far. It's been a rather cool spring here so I'm still optomistic I'll get a lot more sprouts over the coming weeks. I haven't planted anything out yet, still cleaning up the gardens and mulching. Since it has been so cool I'm not in a big hurry yet either. I've always got gobbs of potted plants waiting for a home up by my greenhouse anyways :)

Glo - Thanks for reassuring me! I hope your move is awesome! My husband has wanted to move us to Colorado for years and hasn't managed to quite convince me yet, although I think it's absolutely wonderful there. LOL So, Winter Solstice is the same everywhere? (LOL)... I guess you're seeing how little I know... Nancy - Thanks for the tip! I am gonna have to watch the lead hand myself as I way oversowed my cantaloupes this fall. The poor babies are fighting each other and giving me 2 to 5 inches fruits that don't look like they're EVER going to full ripen. I will be much more careful in the future. I'll try to not get TOO excited when I go to plant. LOL Carrie - Wow! That's some really good info. That's exactly the kind of thing I was worried about. I'm grateful for the heads up. Liz - LIZ!!! Hey, girl! Fancy meeting you here and there and now here! hee hee... The whole last paragraph of what you wrote is exactly what is concerning me. I know that I personally wear shorts through-out almost the whole winter except for those few crazy days that we see. 50's or what have you is not cold to me... We do get the occasional freeze, but then a week or two later at most you could have a 70+ degree high! All this in the same few days / weeks / months... it's SO crazy! Oh, and if they're having a plantswap around the 8th of December as well, I sure want to know as I'll be out that way. :-) Blessings, Angela

I, too, understand about the American Girl thing. My daughter has a trunk of beautiful clothes for her AG dolls, all purchased from her grandmother. I will *never* be the one to give any of this away or she will be posting one day about how she can't forgive ME! As for getting rid of husband's stuff...this is sort of along the same lines. My husband loves car races and has a favorite tee shirt he wears only when he attends a race. It's sponsored by Marlboro. Well, one day a telemarketer called and I picked up the phone (before caller I.D.!) and they wanted to do a survey on what kinds of cigarettes my husband smokes. Thoroughly disgusted, I exclaimed, "My husband has NEVER smoked." End of discussion. I was so proud of the fact that I ended THOSE phone calls. Awhile later my husband wondered why Marlboro wasn't sending him free racing tee-shirts and stuff anymore. Somehow we got on the conversation about that phone call and how I couldn't believe they thought he smoked. My husband looked at me with this incredulous look and said, "You didn't tell them I don't smoke, did you?" Yep. He was so upset and STILL is. Now they won't send him anything because they know the truth and he is still mad about it! So he has that one racing shirt that has little holes starting in the neckline but he refuses to part with it. And I definitely will *not* be the one to give away, considering I'm already in the doghouse about the other stuff! Sheryl

I love your room; the colors, the placement, everything. It gives me hope. I'm moving my bedroom around to make room for large, tall nightstand/chests. My queen bed will be centered under a 74" wide window. I was worried about having it in front of drapes until I saw your room. I plan to continue to wintersow my annuals. I find that I am able to grow very unusual things that way, and in the volumes that I plant, it's much more economical. I just finished sowing my last seeds for the 2007 winter/spring sowing today, and won't be sowing more til probably July or so. I have a few things that require warm-cold-warm, and I will also be sowing flowering kale for the fall.

This year, I have giant new beds to fill, so I went overboard again. I've done a lot of grasses and some shrubs and trees, including magnolia, kalmia, dogwood and laburnum. These are more experiments than anything else, but I found the Gardens North website through recommendations here on GW, adn had to try a bunch of stuff.

I did purchase a bunch of seed this year, and realized how spoiled I've been by the traders here on GW. I found that T&M, Swallowtail Seeds, Select Seeds, and Pinetree are downright stingy on some of their selections - not all varieties, but I often found myself peering into the packet thinking "that's it?!"

OMG! I think I'm done!
