I think I'm done with 'brugs for postage!' I have NO more envelopes on the desk!

Of course - the mail hasn't run as of yet!!

Not heard from Ria, Tiffany or Mary! Hummm!

I've tried to answer emails as they came in. But so many of them - I may have missed someone!

Sorry - if I missed you!

Wish I would have had tons & tons more to send out! lol!

It's been alot of work - but fun!

I hope each of you were to some extent 'enabled' & have great luck with your cuttings! Lots of pics next year - please! I love pics! :))

For the ones I could not 'enable' or didn't have enough brug cuttings to share - I apologize. Maybe next year!

Be careful also how much water you give them. Typically 1" per week of rain is enough once established, first year a bit more. If the soil at the base (under the mulch!) is not dry, you probably don't need to water. Overwatering (and over-fertilizing) kills most new rhododendrons, especially if you have poor-draining soil. Don't water if the plant isn't showing signs of being dry if you've gotten rain recently, even for newly-planted plants. New growth on rhododendrons will wilt during the day if it's very hot; this is ok if the growth is firm and upright again by morning. New rhododendrons do need to be watered weekly if there's no rain or if temps are very hot, but be careful. Also, don't cut the rootball when planting in general; if it's pot-bound tease the edges with a finger to get some of the root ends loose. If the soil drains poorly, be even more careful of overwatering. If it's hard clay, plant on top of the surface and surround it with a mix of loam, sand, and good humus, compost and/or peat. Newly bought rhododendrons and azaleas (and pieris) shouldn't need any fertilization for a year and none in the soil when planted, and after that, a single or perhaps two applications in the spring of Hollytone or Osmocote in recommended coverage. Do not fertilize after June or you'll encourage it to put in new growth that won't be hardened for winter. I plan to continue to wintersow my annuals. I find that I am able to grow very unusual things that way, and in the volumes that I plant, it's much more economical. I just finished sowing my last seeds for the 2007 winter/spring sowing today, and won't be sowing more til probably July or so. I have a few things that require warm-cold-warm, and I will also be sowing flowering kale for the fall. This year, I have giant new beds to fill, so I went overboard again. I've done a lot of grasses and some shrubs and trees, including magnolia, kalmia, dogwood and laburnum. These are more experiments than anything else, but I found the Gardens North website through recommendations here on GW, adn had to try a bunch of stuff. I did purchase a bunch of seed this year, and realized how spoiled I've been by the traders here on GW. I found that T&M, Swallowtail Seeds, Select Seeds, and Pinetree are downright stingy on some of their selections - not all varieties, but I often found myself peering into the packet thinking "that's it?!"

I had to get my kids back to school, so I took a much needed leave from canning for September. This weekend I finally made the fig jam I was planning from some fresh gifted figs, and I picked a pile of herbs to hang and dry. Now I'm feeling like I'm back in business! I am jealous of all of you who are "sick" of tomatoes, since I lost almost all of mine to the late blight, sigh. Plans for fall-early winter: --bake/freeze some cheese pumpkin for holiday pies. --Apple picking next weekend followed by applesauce, prepping ready made pies, etc. --I have raspberries and blackberries in the freezer, portioned for jams, as well as two batches of tomatoes portioned for more salsa, which is being used up fast. No rush to work with this stuff until time allows. --I'll pick up some broccoli, cauliflower and squash at the farm stands to freeze and/or store over the next few weekends. --I'm going to try my hand at sauerkraut. --con a friend out of some of the many chestnuts that she's been harvesting from her trees, and some quinces that are just about ready. --And I'm dying to try curing some fresh green olives, which are available at our local produce market now. I will be really dangerous once I get a pressure canner. Haven't even tried soups/broth etc. yet. Even with winter included for canning, I'm not sure there are enough hours in each day, ha.

I love your room; the colors, the placement, everything. It gives me hope. I'm moving my bedroom around to make room for large, tall nightstand/chests. My queen bed will be centered under a 74" wide window. I was worried about having it in front of drapes until I saw your room.
