Ventura College's Community Education program is offering the following classes in May:

"GROW YOUR OWN VEGGIES"

Saturday, May 9, from 9am to noon

This class covers everything from choosing the best vegetables to planning the garden to harvesting your bounty. Handouts cover rotation, pests/disease problems and sources. An amazing amount of information in a short time. Perfect for beginners.

"CONTAINER GARDENING FOR EVERY SPACE"

Saturday, May 9, 1pm to 4pm

An afternoon workshop that presents the basics of containers, starting with container choice, making your own potting soil and basic container care. It finishes with a step-by-step demonstration of how to pot up a container; bring your own container, plant and potting soil if you want to follow along.

"THE SUSTAINABLE GARDEN AND LANDSCAPE"

Saturday, May 30, 9am to 3pm (includes lunch break)

This information-filled one-day seminar takes a look at appropriate plants, effective water use, lawn substitutes, composting, integrated pest management and other earth-friendly gardening and landscaping practices. "Sustainability" may be the buzziest word in landscaping today.

And for the creative writers among you:

"WRITING FOR MAGAZINES"

Friday, May 8, from 6pm to 9pm

"W for M" looks primarily at the business end of getting published in professional magazines of all kinds while offering valuable notes to being a better writer. A wham-bam synopsis presented by a former Sunset magazine staff writer.
