I found a cocoon...now what?

Mind you, I've been looking over sixty acres for a caterpillar, egg, or chrysalis. I walk over to my overgrown asparagus bed and find this:

I'm tempted to take it inside and wait to see what happens. I certainly have enough asparagus to keep it happy.

What do y'all think?

hi,
i just got done raising butterflies with a kit-it was for
my grandson-we released them last week. i think it would
be ok to take them in-not in direct hot sun. make sure you have some kind of container-box with some netting over it? not sure-or cut sides of a box-keeping the corners intact-put netting around them. not sure if i'm explaining that right.i'd say in a week you should have a butterfly.

I was hoping someone on the forum might recognize this and have an answer for you. Rhizo knows a lot about different insects, etc. If she sees this, maybe she will respond.

Not for sure what you have. It looks like a cocoon. However, other insects make sacs that look like cocoons, including spiders. The only way to find out what it is, is to snip it off and put it in a container. Once whatever is inside emerges, you'll have your answer. Just make sure whatever it is can't escape.

So I started playing with the Lucite a bit after getting it separated in shapes. I've had this bowl for years, and never knew what to do with it. It measures 22 inches across, and is 1/2 thick. Start of what looks like a moth or butterfly of some sort. Thank you all for your ideas, and comments.

Side topic: Salgal, it's a shame your ex didn't tell his half-sib WHY he dropped her. She must have been terribly hurt. What you've described is the natural familial attraction that bonds families. When it doesn't take place between young children within their natural families, and they first meet as adults, the love and familiarity sometimes feels sexual. At my search and support group we always warned reuniting adoptees and birthfamily members about this. Knowing that these powerful feelings could be confusing helped to prevent some terrible heartaches. Where people misinterpreted the feelings and acted on them sexually, it destroyed the development of a genuine family bond. An adoptee, having lived a whole life knowing he is 'different', separated from his genetic kin, is especially vulnerable to mistaking powerful feelings of connection. (This is entirely separate from an adoptee's love for the adoptive parents and siblings.)

We don't know where you live and Southern Blight is not all that common and is predominately a regional issue of tropical and sub-tropical areas and we in zone 7 don't normally fall into the area. So I'm just suggesting that I wouldn't be too quick to jump to that conclusion unless you get confirmation. I'm not disputing that may be it, just that it would be unusual for it to develop so quickly in a single plant where the rest show no symptoms. Plus there are several other fungus possibilities and all have somewhat different treatments in addition to heavy fungicide use. It would be worth taking a sample to the local county ag extension office for diagnosis. Just something to consider. Dave

I love a good revived thread. :-) My good deals are all from eBay this time. My desktop computer is not quite four years old, but since it gets a lot of use and we believe in "lifecycling" electronics I've been casually looking for a good deal on a somewhat high-end refurbished PC to replace it. Before I found anything, my computer quit. Just refused to turn on. I researched possible causes, and called in my expert: my son. The power supply was a common source of the problem, so I bought one on eBay for $20. Nope, that didn't do it, but we kept the replacement in the computer and held onto the old one as a spare. Next we replaced the motherboard ($70 on eBay). Yes! The computer works fine at this point, but we figured since the hard drive has been spinning all these years, why not replace it--or add another, which is what we did--rather than wait for it to fail? So I bought a 1TB SSD drive on Amazon ($100), and now have a "new computer" for under $200. Also, I've been wanting an L.L. Bean tan canvas "barn jacket" for a long time but was unwilling to pay over $100 for it. Even eBay prices on them aren't usually tempting, but this time I found one for under $20 including shipping. I love it! It really is "like new," and I look forward to wearing it when spring starts to make an appearance. All I need now are olive green "wellies" for our muddy season.

I need to get a new bed of asparagus planted. I've left two mature stands at two different locations, and haven't gotten around to planting here. It takes several years to be able to harvest, so I'd better quit stalling and get going. Your posting was a reminder.

FWIW, if it is lepidopteran, most likely it will just be a Noctuid, Geometrid or Tortricid moth.
