More spring photos

The pond is pretty barren, since I got rid of the water lilies and planted tiny little white ones from ebay that may take a few years to bloom. But the irises are blooming over on the left.

The euphorbia is looking good, finally. It took a long time to get established here, since it is so dark in winter and hot in summer.

Thank you, thank you, all! Jackie, unless someone says otherwise I'm just going to leave the dieback - for now. Other roses in my garden haven't responded that way - though this spring does seem to have more dieback than previous years. Even a local friend mentioned having it in her garden. Annabeth, I'm glad you agree. Capitaine used to be in too much shade, and he wasn't near as handsome. If I have any more failures, I know who the replacement will be. :)) Jeannie, I think you mean Lauren (the deep rose with purple and lavender). It is a pretty, little flower on the bush in the mauve color range - and hard for me to photograph because of the exploding colors - digitally, that is. Angela, mine isn't that tall yet but is BS-free here, too, and I can see why a near fall into Le Vesuve could give you a panic attack at the remembrance of it. I didn't know about thornless roses either. How could there be such a thing as a thornless rose? But I have had several without realizing it. I only realize after working on a bush for a while, reaching in and among the canes, and then notice I'm not scratched and bloody. My worst seems to be Maman Cochet, Climbing. Big prickles on the canes and small sharp ones under the leaves. I forgot myself and did some trimming on her a few weeks ago without pruning gloves. Golly, was I sorry! I couldn't touch her without getting stuck - painfully. Vettin, I really enjoy enabling. How convenient that you like being enabled! Glad you liked the campanions. Strawberry Hill, my soil is neutral even though I thought for a long time that it was alkaline. But even so, I had to ditch several roses that didn't like it. Patricia, when all those larkspur seedlings sprouted, I just thought they were weeds. Then as I was reaching to start pulling them, it dawned on me that I had one plant in that spot last spring that I grew from seeds. Rocket is the name, I think. I had plants sprout 50 feet away. Probably the seeds can't survive your winter temps, right? It was so nice to get the purple larkspur in the rose photos. For so long I've been drooling over others' roses-with-companion photos. It's a thrill to have my own. Ingrid, I thought of you when posting the Capitaine photos since he's an SDLM sport. Do you have him? He is so gorgeous. Your daylilies may be ones that bloom mid-season or later, or maybe they're the dormant kind that needed more winter chill to be strong enough to come back. I hope it's the former and not the latter. If you get more (and I hope you will - I almost enjoy them more than the roses), try to stick to the evergreens. Semi-evergreens work, too, but lose some of their foliage in the winter - though maybe not your winters. Carol, it does not get that disgusting pink-white color. It seems the color bleeds out and it gets pale yellow. Once, they all turned pale green. The blooms last a long time. Here is a photo of an older bloom fading. I don't know how cold hardy it is but I do think it would prefer a cooler climate as the summer blooms are small. My summers are evil--very hot and dry.

Thanks. You know this is the third year for the Primrose. I can't believe they've made it through these last cold winters. It's the best luck I've ever had with them. I found two orange Primrose at a nursery yesterday and planted those today. Also put out one new anenome called "Wild Swan". It's small yet and I've been keeping it on the window sill for a couple weeks. Then I transplanted another that has been growing in a the worst spot possible I would think since 2008, but it returns every year and even blooms albeit it doesn't grow much. It's called "Elise Feldman". Now watch since I've transplanted it, it will not be happy and I'll lose it. :(

Perhaps this is another opportunity to laud the Rose Forum of the National Garden Association where many of us have joined (Jeri, Lisa, Nippstress, MustbNuts, Christopher and many more whose names escape me at the moment. It's a very friendly and easy to use forum, pictures are easy to load and there are no ads! You can be from overseas also, Marlorena, so I hope everyone has a look-in to decide whether they might decide to join. Anything new is never comfortable right away, and this has been my home for so long that I'm really sorry to part ways. I'm still going to answer posts here but I don't think I'll ever start a new post. Houzz has just worn me down with their ineptitude and lack of genuine concern for the gardenweb users, but it's difficult to wrench myself away. Perhaps it will be easier if I meet more of you over there!

Beautiful as always, Renee, but there are a couple of mystery blossoms. Brugmansia in the foreground, but what are the dainty little red flowers? Dianthus perhaps? And the orangey red cup-like blooms at the left? They look almost like tulips, but their leaves seem a bit too strappy. Inquiring minds want to know.

Do you work in the garden every day?

Do you have problems with raccoons or other critters in the pond? (We do, the raccoons really nasty-up the water, not sure what they are doing but it isn't good.)

Quite a water feature you have there. How do you manage to keep the beds and the walkway free of weeds? Admirable.

Pardon my ignorance of Southern California horticulture, but which one is the Euphorbia in the second pic?

Is the large yellow/chartreuse bush on the left in second pic a euonymus?

Thank you for the kind words- I have been working hard to get it nice until the San Fernando Valley Iris Tour on Saturday (then it can all go to seed for the year!).

Kay, the dainty red flowers are impatiens and some sort of annual bedding salvia. I just popped them in for color. The orange flowers are gazanias- the big fancy kind. I just bought four more for that spot- they seem to be able to take the extremes of sun and shade.

jjjb, the big huge shrub on the left is a variegated Duranta. It gets frost damage every year (along with the Brugmansias), but comes back by late April. It has huge thorns, and although it is only supposed to get six to eight feet tall, mine is probably 16 feet tall by now with the support of the fence.
Nothing will grow in that walkway- which is why I pulled out what was left of the grass and put in flagstone. I'm having a tough time getting anything to grow in that sideyard at all- shade plants get burned in the summer and sun plants rot in the winter. The absence of weeds is the only good thing about that spot.

Socks, I do work in the garden most days- the days I am not at work. I can't wait to retire! Ten more years... I know what you mean about raccoons- they get a goldfish occasionally, and really mess up the pond plants. That's one reason the ponds are so bare right now- marginal plants get destroyed.

Looking good rene,my brug is blooming like crazy now also.Same color as yours,i also have a pink one that doesn't do as well as the yellow,then again I have to fight the darn snails in that area more.

Socks,are you sure it's raccoons getting into your pond?? I ask because that's what we thought was getting into ours as well.I said raccoons,dh said cats,told him cats wouldn't get into the water to get the fish.

So he went to kmart got a cheapie security camera and set it up near the pond,and low and behold we were both surprised when we found out who the critters were~~~~~~~~~~~those ugly blackbirds/crows or whatever they are.Unfreaking believable,who'd a thunk it!!

We have since turned the pond into a succulent garden.
