Comments (16)Blanca, So funny that you mention "happy" music for your plants. When I was in high school I did a comparison between plants grown from seeds under identical conditions; the only exception was that one group had Disney music played (it was an LP that played over and over automatically if that hints at the years). When I told the Disney company of my findings (don't know why I did, but guess I thought they should know that their music was involved in this positive study) they sent me a new LP!! Whoo hoo...I think I must have been 15. That was the same year that my biology teacher spent extra time before/after school and taught me meristem culture of orchids (I think that's what it was called). It involved taking pieces of an orchid, cutting it and plating it out on agar in flasks, and it grew into clumps of cells that would be transferred again and that made new baby epidendrum orchids. When I was in Costa Rica and saw fields of these red/orange orchids growing wild, I thought of Mr. Havickhorst. He was like a surrogate father to me (my own dad and I butted heads) and we still keep in touch!! OK...so that's way more than you wanted to know about me! Comments (18)Sure thing Mike. Yesterday in the late evening after a lot of maintenance, work and watering, I realized I wasn't spending enough time enjoying my plants. This morning I took a leisurely stroll and a handful of pics. I've included 5 'indespensible conifers', 5 that I think all collectors should really own and then another ten that currently sit high on my own list. It will undoubtably change over time and as my plants acquire more character. First, five conifers to plant instead of the dreaded 'Lowe's' conifers(arborvitae, picea pungens 'glauca', etc.): Picea omorika 'Pendula Bruns'. Hands down the most interesting, graceful, stately conifers for sale. Not readily available in larger sizes, hopefully this changes as few conifers create such a statement. Only gets better with age. This. particular specimen is growing quite irregularly at an early age. Picea abies 'Gold Drift' and 'The Blues'. This is sort of cheating, two conifers in one. Both are strong weepers and grow about the same rate. The combination of colors simply demanded this sort of marriage. Pinus contorta 'Chief Joseph'. Wonderfully compact and of course, the brightest, best looking gold from about November to April. Picea mariana 'Aureovarigata'. A simply beautiful, large conifer. Three colored effect. Picea engelmannii 'Bush's Lace'. A phenominally beautiful, slightly weeping conifer simply makes most upright blue spruces obsolete. And Ten that really caught my eye or already had my eye. Abies procera 'Blaue Hexe'. A stunningly blue small dwarf. I love it. Pice orientalis 'Iseli Seedling'. Super form and color, even in a lot of sun. Picea sitchensis 'Thomas'. A tiny mound of great colors, especially with new growth. Picea pungens 'Wisconsin Cream'. Great color contrast between old and new growth. Normal habit is of the medium dwarf upright type - a compact wide cone. Picea orientalis 'Nutans'. Great character, this one should be fun to watch. Abies vejari. A rare fir from Mexico, it has stunning new *and* old growth. The new growth borders on teal or aqua-marine. It's the most interesting color in a conifer I have seen. Apparently has great cones as well. Cedrus libani 'Hedgehog'. A cool little hedgehog, small dwarf with huge needles and a very interesting mounding habit. Cedrus libani 'Green Knight'. Very nice color and usually grows irregularly. Great small dwarf. Picea omorika 'Peve Tijn' or 'Tijn'. Great golden/blue/green hues, handles full sun and forms a perfect upright form in great time. Hope you enjoyed! -Will...See MoreOne more time... Photos of your old houses please
Comments (65)Hey y'all thanks! blufish: We really think that someone was just after a "new look" for that "musty old Victorian". We think the stucco happened when some other updates occured in 1925, so the bricks might have been due a repointing and some mason talked them into the whole Spanish Revival thing. We're not sure what it would take to remove the stucco, although I'm tempted almost daily to just go outside and start whacking on the house with a hammer. My hope is after the Powerball fairies bless us that we can either remove all the stucco and restore the bricks or remove all the stucco and reface with a thin brick. mom2lilenj: Good luck on the windows! We've been fairly lucky with the windows. It's clear that most of ours are original 1/1 double hung. There are 3 that were removed in the back of the house, 2 were replaced with metal casement windows (painted shut of course) and the 3rd was replaced with the current back door. A PO also enclosed the side porch and converted it into a bedroom, adding a couple of other windows. All the new windows were either added at the time of the stucco or afterwards. Every last "new" window has suffered severe water damage at the sills and we're going to be hard at work trying to repair them this summer. Oh the joys of old houses! On the fun front, we've discovered one of the original porch posts under the stucco, (after a large chunk of stucco fell off!) did a bit more exploring and found some paint shadows where the circle trim used to be. That gave us some measurements, so we were able to acertain that most of our stucco columns are located where the original porch posts were, so we're hoping we'll find most of our original porch posts are just hidden under there. I've just emailed the old house photo to a wood working shop to get quotes on replacing all the fancy trim. Cross fingers and I'll have a proper porch again one day! Always ;-) Hunzi...See MoreDaylilies with more then 15 characters
Comments (15)Thanks everyone for your comments. I like red, but it's only certain shades of daylily red. To me, as a rose grower, there is nothing more beautiful then a big crimson red rose. Hard to compete with them in that color range. But the orange reds in daylilies such as Wayah Valley are something different.....Good luck with your Mary's Baby Sherry. In your cooler climate the color ought to be amazing. Hope you post a picture.......Debra: I lost my initial Mary's Baby many years ago over winter. I called Richard Norris and he sent me another one for free and said it shouldn't have died on me. I was very surprised. The one from him is the one that's still going all these years later.............Maryl...See Morejim1961 / Central Pennsylvania / Zone 6
