Just to throw in a crazy idea (but one that I've used two years now, and love the results) Lonicera (Honeysuckle). Crazy, right? For starters, I can almost hear the shunning from those who see this as a noxious weed in the Midwest, but I live in Southern Oregon, where it's a quaint obedient vine. I usually get the gallon-sized plants at work, that are about 2 1/2 feet tall, growing on a teepee of 3 bamboo stakes. Plant it, and then spend a good month teasing the main vines downward (smaller ones seem to adapt more readily to gravity). Past that, it's just a matter of keeping the hanging basket (oh, did I forget to mention that? :) watered, and enjoying the hummingbirds as they feast. This year's basket has purple-leaf Honeysuckle in it, with variegated Lemon Thyme surrounding it and spilling over the sides. I promise pictures when I can get my hands on a camera later. Also, the usual annual (edit: some perennials) list for hanging baskets and draping over planters: Petunias (various Wave series do the trick fine) Million bells (Calibrachoa) ^ also hybrids between the two Bacopa (Gulliver's White has larger than usual blooms) Allysum Lobelia (cascading varieties) Verbena (spreading varieties) Lysimachia (the aforementioned Creeping Jenny, also has a few other species like Persian Chocolate (congestiflora) Ivy geraniums Fuschias Galium Plectranthus Portulaca (moss-rose usually, but also seen purslane used) Thyme (creeping varieties) Fragaria (flowering and normal eating Strawberries) Sedums (low-growing ones) And there's so many more, those are just what came to mind. And if all else fails ... go nuts and mix it up!

I concur with bitzppa. I knock them out of the nursery pots and jam them in side by side (especially with annuals) as long as you water and feed enough they will be fine. It depends on what you are intending to attract. Bees and butterflies can squeeze into some tight spots, I like to plant my hummingbird pots a little sparse, so the little dearies can get at all the blooms, not just the outside ones.

It totally should, with good care and a crazy pollination game you need to play. Mine flowered profusely from the get go as five gallon trees, however despite trying to cross-pollinate between the two different varieties by hand, I never got any fruit. Some formed, but always dropped off before reaching even the size of a grape. I gave up after 3 or 4 years of no fruit and constant struggle with scale insects during 6 months of year when plants had to be inside in my climate. Pollination is definitely tricky with these guys⦠they must be cross-pollinated by another variety that has a different flower type (called A or B). Pollen is only released either in the morning or evening, and the stigma is receptive for a short time as well. You can look all thus up online to find a compatible partner for Haas. Good luck!

All fabulous suggestions. I would not discount ivy geranium, which blooms most of the year and decorates retaining walls in Highland Park (or at least it did when I lived there in the 1980s). I also remember being entranced by tall retaining walls covered with orchid colored iceplant blossoms (the little leafed variety). The nicest thing about the iceplant cascades was their narrowness: driveways would not be blocked by billowing flowers. Unfortunately, the show was brief, but the tiny leaves looked rather mossy for the rest of the year.
