Effects of using Round Up Dilemma

I wasn't sure where to post this, but since I live in California, I decided maybe you experienced gardeners can help me.

I have several plants ordered and some seeds started. I would like to put them here and there in my courtyard. there are some large shrubs (heavenly bamboo being predominant) that I want out! If I chop the trunks and brush the open wounds with round-up, will residual roundup be in my soil and hurt my new plants?

If those roots die, I imagine they will be easier to get out.

I think you need to get the product on the leaves to really kill it. Let it be dead for about a month and they should come out easier. Get some cheap plastic sheeting to cover things up. Too bad you didn't do this last fall. I did that for a small tree that was placed to close to house by previous owner and it came out very easily. I also had to remove an apple tree (again put in wrong place by previous owner) and nursery told me to put brush killer on the stump...I still have apple coming up from the roots that I keep spraying.
If you spray it on the leaves I don't think there would be any residual affects. Check the label.

Perhaps advertise in craigslist the shrubs free and they dig them out. Todays economy you might get someone easily.

I love that Craigslist idea! Thanks!! Also, I'll experiment with one starting with the leaves as you suggest, and I'll be sure to cover the ground and plants nearby with plastic sheeting!

It's worth mentioning, I think, that only the phloem tissue (the inner bark - that brownish layer between the outer bark and the cambium) is capable of carrying material downward to the roots. That is why basal bark applications and the "hack and squirt" method work, ie the herbicide easily enters the phloem tissue. Painting the entire cut surface of a stump is wasteful, as the sapwood, or xylem, only carries sap upward from the roots, and of course the heartwood is dead tissue that doesn't carry anything anywhere. I've had great success over the years painting triclopyr on the phloem of freshly cut stumps with a small paintbrush, or by pouring very small amounts with the cap over the same. A little goes a long way. The cheapskate in me gets pleasure from having maximum results from minimal input, and I've never had any nearby plants show damage. I used to use Ammate (ammonium sulfamate, I believe it was) in the old days, if anyone is old enough to remember that stuff. Yellow crystals.

g'day anney, yes overuse issues in one of our wheat belt areas in the western part of the country they have this issue, where they have developed round up/glyphosate resistant weeds, the last time i saw a doco' on it some years ago the prognosis was that there was no new herbicide to deal with this on the horizon, then what the problem re-occurs all over again but this time with a far more potent chemical being used where food crops are grown? len Here is a link that might be useful: lens garden page

Glyphosate (RoundUp) is most effective on plants in active growth - since it is translocated from the foliage to the root systems and then throughout the plant tissue, the foliage must be actively photosynthesizing to achieve this movement efficiently. It is still a bit too early in the season for a lot of plants to be in active growth. Some early weeds perhaps but the vast majority need a few more weeks before your use of RoundUp is most effective. Generally, the recommendation is to apply, wait to see results (7-10 days) then reapply as necessary. If/when plants are in active growth, the results may be evident a lot faster - a day or two depending on species. The less active the growth, the longer for results and the less effective those results may be. The second application is more or less for insurance purposes :-) It is not always easy to tell at the time if your first application was thorough or complete. As to the effectiveness of RoundUp or its generic equivilents on ivy, fleshy and glossy evergreen foliage - like English ivy - has a waxy covering or cuticle on the leaf that makes penetration of the herbicide into the plant tissue very difficult. There are additives you can get that helps with that process but that is the primary reason why the RoundUp/Rodeo/Ranger Pro type products are not recommended for ivy control. Crossbow is a different herbicide altogether and has a more far-reaching toxicity. It's overkill for most weeds.

I have found that if I apply the Round Up with a paint brush, I have far less problems with the surrounding plants getting bothered. I once sprayed some weeds in an area with some irises, I ended up with the strangest looking iris blooms. Be very careful with over spray.

With the rains softening the soil, is there no chance of simply digging the whole plant out by the roots? Seems simpler than painting on glyphosate. That would also give you a chance to put some long-lasting nutrients down at the roots for the next plant and possibly till some organic matter in.

I have killed many stumps and prevented new root suckers from growing by following the advice given me by an arborist years ago. When you cut off a tree or shrub close to the ground, IMMEDIATELY paint the cut surface with full strength 41% Roundup. If you wait till morning it is too late and the chemical will not be drawn into the cells of the plant and the roots will not be killed. You will not contaminate the soil or affect other plants in the root zone. Al

Thank you Al! We have a lot of shrubs here that are about 6 years old, and tough to dig out. Every where there is a "heavenly" bamboo, and other large shrubs, is exactly where I hope to put my roses and berry plants. The round up seems like the easiest way to get rid of the nasties! Thanks!
