It smells so good

The orange, lemon, grapefruit and lime trees next door are covered with blossoms, and the breeze is carrying the scent into my house. The brugmansias just outside the open door are loaded with hundreds of flowers, and the climbing roses over the living room windows are in full bloom. I have a bouquet of lilacs on the coffee table.

I can barely smell the goats.

What, Al, you don't like the smell of goats?

I'll be putting up more chicken wire on my neighbor's side of the ivy fence today while they are on vacation. A kid'll eat ivy too, wouldn't you? Big holes chewed right through the green, so that I have a nice clear view of goatdom. Did you know they can climb over chain link?

Thanks for the warm welcome! There are only about 4,500 people that live here, I like hearing from people out in the "real world." =-) I grew up in Chicago & have never had luck growing a garden, but the conditions here are much better so I hope I left my brown thumb back in the states. Blue ocean, yes indeed. Lots of tropical plants. Lots of tourists on vacation too. I'm currently working in a shop & we never get a lot of traffic in here. I would have shared a photo of the ocean, but haven't been to it yet today, so here's a photo of the bananas that are growing in the yard of the house we're renting. I hope they ripen soon! We do have a kitty, well... now I guess I have to say we "share" a kitty. A little tabby started coming around & I started feeding it, and he started coming in the house, and I started buying him toys & now he stays a lot of the time. I thought he was a stray (there are many here), but we had dinner with the neighbors the other night & they were "missing" a kitty, and yup - that's the one. We all laughed. I guess he likes the food I serve better. So now we get him in the evenings, but make sure he's out during the day to visit his old folks.

Just took a walk thru the back garden and what a wonderful smell back there. Discovered it is coming from our LoQuat Tree. This is the second year it has bloomed, but last year it had so few blooms that it didn't perfume the air. It's wonderful. BUT in the front garden we had to do "Nose Patrol" to track down one of those mushroom thingies that start out looking like a white golf ball, and open up into a orange colored cage looking thing. Now that is a smell we can do without.

I just have to mention this shrub, some of you might already be growing it. I have a mock orange, Philadelphus "Belle Etoile" planted below my kitchen window, the first few flowers have just started to open. This mock orange orange is HIGHLY FRAGRANT, it has a single white flower with a maroon blotch. On a warm summer evening the fragrance will fill the garden. When the window is open it fills my kitchen with it's lovely sweet fragrance. This is a very easy shrub to grow, if you have a spot for it I'm sure you'll love it. Annette

I do, I have had two for a few years now, both were recently moved, one apparently loves its' new location, the other is still very small. The happy plant is now almost 4 feet tall, if I just let it go, how tall would it get?

What do they do with the goats? Pets?

My elementary school has a tiny citrus grove (5-7 trees), and the scent is heavenly.

I love the fragrance of my brugmansia, roses, lavenders, but oh nothing can top the orange blossom perfume.

I have read that Cotyledons will poison goats. Be careful not to grow Cotyledons.

I bought a meyer lemon this weekend. Don't need another lemon. Don't have room for it--had to make it a potted patio plant. But they smell so divine in bloom that I couldn't not buy it.

You should see the neighbor's fruit trees. They are all limbed up to goat-on-the-hind-legs height. Check out the little baby pygmy Nigerian goat they just got:

They are very cute - but I'm glad they're not my neighbors. And you're right - the smell of orange blooms is tempting me to go visit my orange tree RIGHT NOW. And I'm supposed to be cleaning my house (so how'd I end up on GardenWeb?).

I need to beg your neighbor to borrow his goats for a week! I am trying to kill English Ivy and Oxalis and it looks like this is an easier solution!!
I have close to a dozen citrus trees, but over here, they are just setting buds, it will be a few weeks before the full fledged spring blooms are out.
