Chinese Maple

Hello, I am a novice but I got to retire this year and really want to start taking care of my trees and plants now. I have a chinese maple and the leaves keep coming and then die off, at first I thought it wasn`t enough water and then we have had alot of rain for about 2 weeks and all the new reddish leaves came out and it died off again, any comments would be very appreciated I just love this tree and don`t want to lose it. Thank You Patty

Which Chinese maple do you have? Is it Acer pentaphyllum?

I'm thinking you have Abutilon, sometimes commonaly called "Chinese Lantern". I don't think any Acer would be putting on leaves just yet.

Can you confirm?

As has been said MANY times in this forum the seeds may or may not look like the "mother" tree...and it usually takes years before it really becomes true to form...If you go back to Canobie take some pics thats your best shot albiet a shot in the dark IMHO...it most likely can't be identified pr say but the basic cultivar lineage may be obvious to some of us but without a pic this is a basic waist of time ( sorry to be so blunt)...it will certainly be most likely obvius whether it is a A.p. Korean A.s or just some bizaar type ...It most likely is a seedling of no repute that will never be identified.. David

No, not in NJ:) Good point. However, the maple or oak I am considering are from South America as well, so nothing I do with really be something that would have been used in 1888. Is the look of imported maple or oak close to Ameircan maple or oak, and Brazilian cherry verry different then American cherry? I was thinking the weathered/old look of the handscraped floors would look more original than shiny new cherry?

Thank you for answering, I`ve had a chinese lantern before and that is not my tree. A friend gave this tree last spring and it was full of green leaves and as it got cooler the leaves turned a beautiful reddish brown something like sugar gum trees and now it looks bad all the new leaves died, our weather has been so irratic we had 2 weeks of rain and then the next week it was around 80 degrees

Is it Acer discolor? If so, you might simply be in the wrong climate zone for it. Most of the deciduous maples are poorly adapted to latitudes below 35 degrees north.

Most maples are deciduous, meaning that they lose their leaves every winter and go dormant. Leaves regrow in spring. During their dormancy, they should not be fertilized or over-watered.
I have a feeling you may be talking about one of the Japanese Maples (Acer palmatum or A. dissectum). If your maple started to bud out and then the leaves died off, it may be that they burned in the 80 deg. temps, or that it was too wet, or too cold.
