A question about my Sunset Jade

I've recently aquired this plant, and have noticed it, sometime apparently during the night, has developed 'freckles.' A few of the leaves have white spots all over them. Is this normal or is this cause for concern?

If they look like large pores, yes it is. How big are these spots? Where do you live, is there a lot of moisture in the air at night (high humidity?)

They do look like pores. Size-wise um.. well. About the size of a dot made by a pen on a piece of paper... bad example but it was really the only thing I could think of.
I live in Northwestern Indiana, and as it's just coming spring here, I have it inside. It isn't overly humid at night, but not too dry.

I've another question rearding my own Sunset Jade... it's very small---about an inch and a half tall, and I've just repotted it from the tiny plastic variety into something slightly larger as to not upset the roots by giving it too much room too quickly. However, considering the climate here in Northwestern Indiana, keeping it outside really isn't an option. As is, I have the plant with a few cacti beneath a flourescent lamp. The cacti there have done beautifully--- and bloom every time their blooming season comes. Will the Jade, by rights, do well here, too, or do I need to perhaps make other arrangements? The table I have it sitting on is by a north window, and so it doesn't get too much actual sunlight. There, though, is an eastern window with a table I could put it on if this would perhaps be better for it. Thank you. (P.S. Would having my Jade set outside during the summer for a couple of hours be a good idea? Indiana summers are typically hot and humid--about 80-100 degrees F. and my yard is shaded enough to not give the plant 'sunburn' while still giving it plenty of sunlight.)

Hi Val, I am so glad you gave Lorraine a shot. Isn't her plants great? She emailed me pics of diffrent blooming cacti she has right now and I am debating on buying one of them but I am not sure if I want something else yet. I looked at the one you bought for a while but I decided to get mine because it was more full. I also asked her if she had a picture of the jade she sent to me so she could check it out and tell me if it had that weeping form when she had it and she said yes. She also told me that I would probobly end up having to prune it to get it to produce growth that wouldn't weep. I did accidently break off a large branch by trying to tie it to a stake so it could straghten for me. Well, now I have a cutting that is about 8 inches long and I have laid it down on the turface to see if it will root. What size was the pot yours came in? What did you think of her prices? I thought they were VERY fair. I had to laugh when she sent it to me she packed it in a box that had a beer logo on it and the post office told her that she would have to repackage it because it wouldn't get to me. LOL..Poor Lorraine must have been so frustrated. She told the postal worker that the jade weighed less than a can of beer. I couldn't believe that and it made me nervous thinking she sent the wrong jade but when I got it, it was surprisingly light. How tall is your tree? Andrew

Happy Thanksgiving..I hope everyone has a fine day, and a finer dinner..Don't eat too much, though. :) Josh, I'll have to decide which to do first..prune or repot. Think I'll repot. Last night I checked sunsets roots. It's so rootbound, I was able to lift the rootball from its pot in one piece. lol. Josh, I don't use Peat w/succulents...'no Peat no black soil'..Remember I mentioned that before? Josh, you don't fertilize in summer? Ever? Why only in winter, if you don't mind me asking??? Does fertilizing in winter include all plants? Succulents, tropicals and veggies? Snow in June!! That's amazing. Even flurries is IL in the month of June is rare. What's going on? Has this happened before? Is Foliage Pro the same as Dyna Gro? Do you add to soil or foliar spray? Howdy Whip. I mix mediums, keep in plastic containers and label. Succulent blends have different ingredients than tropical blends. The succulent mix is very gritty, even though Turface isn't included. If my mixes dried any faster, I'd be watering 24/7..lol. Jeff. It's true, I asked why my C. Jade Sunset isn't growing, well, rather, growing slow. But, other succulents are. 98% of my plants were started as babies, cuttings and sown seeds. When I got them, I didn't think ahead..Now, some are so large I don't know where to set and get sun, too..Especially Pachypodiums, E. Crown of Thorns and Agaves. Who'd have 'thunk?' Hello Lady. Yep, don't have time to work on plants today..going to my sister's for Thanksgiving dinner. Perhaps tomorrow I'll repot the sunset. Since it's so rootbound, locating from pot A to pot B won't cause problems. Thanks Hey Mike..As you know, we both have more plants than a small nursery, lol. Remember me telling you how fast my soil dries? If another soil method was used, particularly if it dried quicker than my mix, I'd be doing nothing but watering, lol. I mean, I have to sleep. lol. One large shelf is deep..too deep for me to reach. All are succulents and a couple cacti. They're watered 2-3 times, from Nov-Feb. The mix is bone dry, but since they're succulent they survive..in fact, a couple Aloes and Haworthias are in bud. To those who have luck using Turface, or whatever this type of gritty mix consist of, it's great you found it. Especially those who lost succulents in the past. Anyway, thanks for everyone's help. I did some searching online and found one possible cause of these 'freckles' is mold. The solution was to rub the leaves with a cotton swab soaked in rubbing alcohol, and I did this last night. Already the spots are beginning to clear on all but a couple of leaves, which will be getting another rubdown shortly.

I do have a couple of questions, though, that I had asked on another thread that went unanswered. I currently have the plant beneath a flourescent bulb where I've kept my Christmas cacti, which have done -beautifully-. Will the Jade do well here, or are there other preparations I need to make for it? I know they like lots of light, and so I figured the flourescent bulb would be a good source.

Also, would having my Jade outside in the summer be a good idea...? It tends to get quite humid in the summer, though, to the point of making it hard to breathe when combined with the heat(80-100 degrees F). Though, also, in the summer, we have the air conditioner on, and any table with sufficient light is by the air duct, which I know probably wouldn't do the plant any favors to have a constant stream of cold, dry air going across it.

If the white "spots" are more like a little grain of salt, Jades do this - I think I read once it's salts being excreted through the pores. I don't really know if that's correct, though. It won't hurt the plant, so relax...

Yes, yes, YES - put your Jade outside in summer. Not sure where you are, but I'm in zone 5-ish too, in Nebraska, and I grow mine outside as soon as it's not getting below 32 degrees until the first frost is predicted. Acclimate your Jade to full sun by moving it from a shady spot into a sunny spot over several weeks.

Yeah they are like grains of salt... and when I touched one of the spots it left a very vague residue--which isn't a characteristic of mold.

I live in Northwestern Indiana, so I will definitely be sure to put the Jade out in the summer....well. Any time soon, actually, as soon as the typical March Monsoon season(hehe) is over.

What kind of pot would be best for my Jade? Right now I actually have it in a pot for African Violets, it seems to be doing okay, but the problem is the top of the soil goes dry while the bottom is wet...so I think I'll just have to make a 'watering schedule' instead of actually watering when it's dry... Rootrot would be too easy with that planter, I think.

I'll be getting a digital camera in the next week or two and I'll be sure to post a picture =D
