Some Plants Have Had A Busy Winter!

Got a lot more weeds out early today and where I had 1 red Daylily is now a full square foot of new shoots coming up! Then I saw another and another...will have Daylilies all over the place. Same thing for the Liatris, & the Mums are sending up new shoots too. We're having these nice gentle rains that are so good for everything! Oh yes the grass seed has germinated, but I found a bunch of Violets growing in some areas of the new grass, moved those to another spot, hope they take hold, such a nice scent! I'm so ready to get to the nurseries and to see what I can't live without! Planning, hopefully, to get some varities of Milkweed for the Monarchs and more Hummingbird goodies.

Pat, is it snowing up there yet?? I just read that there's a snow watch/warning for Redding and vicinity! Hope all of your gorgeous plants and their new growth is safe and sound. :)

Brenda, just poked my head outside and it's 38F, kinda chilly, a little drizzley, but no snow. What will be, ?????

Mike!! you are living my dream mista! hehe I WILL have one of those one day :) man that is one Packed house! does it have a gravel floor,? ..so you can just start goin crazy with the hose then?? lol is it heated i guess? any supplemental lighting?? you got stuff ive never even seen before,, ..and your figs are wayy bigger than mine! [dont go there Purple lol] luv the Orchids, i got 3 on sale from Lowes recently (not-in-bloom), and just dug out an old copy of Simon & Schusters guide to Orchids,, about the only 'flowering' plant thats interests me (so far),,, man, makes me wanna come camp out in there hehe whats that last one w/the murraya-lookin flowers? that a citrus? i think i want a hanging hoya now too lol how can yo keep up with all them?? you should really thin-the-herd some mr, want my addy?? lol hey, hope all is well, and you n mom had a Great Turkey day! cheers :)

Did some winter sowing of seeds, still have more to sow, but I've been lazy to get around to it this year. I've been doing some writing, that has occupied most of my time. I'm just now getting back into the gardening groove, cleaned out most of my beds the past few days. Searching the web for any new plants I may have to sneak around to buying (the boyfriend thinks plants are a waste of money). Looking forward to seeing increases on my daylilies, if ones that hadn't yet bloomed for me will this year, and see which of my baby hostas lived or died through the winter. Karen

Yes! I first saw them on Garden Junk and did a search and it pulled up about a dozen different ones plus careful directions. There are some really fabulous and creative ones, mine is just a little copy-cat attempt. I went to the store intending to get plastic pots, the dollar store used to have a good selection - but they had none suitable left. ALL of their glass/ceramic pots had no hole except these! I bought 5 with an extra yellow one and painted it orange with house-paint I had already for my birdhouses. It was just a tiny bit awkward figuring out the order to do things and getting them to tip - but I was determined. Rebar would be ideal but these pots are so small and I happened to spot the purple dragonfly on a stake... had to have it too. The stake had a little 'leg' at the bottom that I chopped off with side-cutters (wire pliers), and later just jammed that little piece into the top pot. I threaded my EMPTY pots onto the bottom and then drove it into the ground about 2 feet. I could have used a helper, say 3-6 years old (grin), to hold the pots upwards as I filled each one starting with the bottom one... but I managed. Actually the child could have filled them better than I did. I did pack the soil really tightly so it doesn't wash out but that would depend on the plants selected, mine are portulacca and can take a little rough handling. I wish they were open for the photo! I was going on the HOPE that I would be able to drive the stake in with just my hands. With the decoration on top I couldn't pound it like I would have rebar. It resisted at first, then I hit a soft pocket and it slid in almost too fast. I hope I didn't pierce the city storm drain (see my page for long tirade!) As for the question 'how do you get them to tip', lay them out on the ground - on the rod - and play with them for a few minutes. It's just geometry, you can do it. The lowest one is flat. Hey! I had a laugh on myself; later that evening I looked out the kitchen window and could only see the orange one and it looked like it was on the ground. I thought my weak little stake had given way. I rushed out there - and everything was fine. Hee hee, I had to laugh, my yard art fooled me! I would love to make one larger, with old unmatched weatherbeaten pots but I went out to my shed and I had over 100 awful black plastic 1 gallon pots, but only 2 pots I could even consider decorative. Oh, well, a good excuse to shop! GH-

I've got daylillies starting to come up all over also, how nice that spring thinks it's coming too:) Yes, I read that about the monarchs too. I have the butterfly bushes, maybe I need to see about getting some milkweed too. We got some good rain also, the bulbs all pushed up another inch over night and the daylillies a couple of inches too!
I love this time of year when everything starts greening up and waking up. Some of my roses even have little buds:) Majority of them are minis, so we're talking itty bitty buds, LOL!

Oh yes, getting spring fever pretty bad here. I want to be out there planting:) Yes I just got the last weeds pulled, there's a whole new crop now!

How's your gardens Brenda?

Now that you've mastered your camera Pat, I'm looking forward to pics of everything when they're all in bloom:)

It snowed down here. I didn't have any but it is cold enough.
Snow fell in Angwin and up the hills coming down from Clear Lake.

Personally I prefer all the daylilies and other goodies poking their new leaves out of the soil.

Penny, hope you didn't have to do any driving today, but if you did, be safe and sane! No snow here in Redding, at least not in my neighborhood, but lots of drizzling rain & a very gloomy sky. The ground is pretty well soaked after so many days of drizzling and the water is starting to puddle. O.K. Mother Nature, please turn the faucets off! Got a little bit of painting done on some crafts, but even with lamps on the lightening is hard on the eyes. Hitting the couch for a short snooze seems like an appropriate pastime!

No snow at my folks', either, Pat. It's always fun and exciting, though, especially since it melts quickly. :D

I'm doing some serious nail biting now. It's already hit 32F here this morning, and it's only 5am. So I'm hoping my gardens can make it through yet another frost, Leslie! I knew Ma Nature was laughing her patooty off when I decided to prune everything. Fingers crossed!

Other than THAT, most of my stuff is coming back. Even a plant that DH collected for me up on St. John's mountain seems to be bent on surviving my lime green thumb. I dumped it out of the pot, thinking it was dead, but no! Tiny new leaves were emerging from the sticks. I think it's some sort of sagebrush, with yellow flowers, very prolific up in the mountains. It's potted back up, and I'll leave it alone. :D

There's snow 1/2way down our foothills this morning. It looks really pretty, but I'm glad it's not here on the valley floor. It was 37 when I woke up at 7, so I don't think we got much colder than that. Everything is wet and drippy though. Rained buckets yesterday and last night. Sun's shining now. Plants seem to be enjoying it all.

It's amazing how much growth they're putting out at almost a daily rate right now, with the rain and sunny breaks in between. It's an adventure to walk out every morning and see something new popping up or budding.
This is the time of year when I get most impatient from all the anticipation of all the blooms to come......sigh........
