Redwood trees in inland so cal

I know I've seen coast redwood doing well in my area where it can get scorching hot in summer. There's a neighborhood a few miles away where they are street trees. Graver Olive House in Ontario has a pretty little grove.

How are they on water? Any worse than sycamores or plane trees?

How do Giant Sequoia or Dawn Redwood compare?

They grow here but will never get 300' tall. We have them at some high schools where they only get water from the grass irrigation.

I have a Giant Sequoia that is perfectly happy in our climate, and nothing bothers it. I have it on a couple of drip heads, and it is about 6' tall now and beautiful.

I have two Coast Redwoods in my Simi Valley garden. They want MUCH more water than they get from lawn water. They always look like they're pinin' for the fiords, with a lot of dead brown needles collecting on the branches and raining down on the lawn. They were gifts- I sure wish they were Sequoias. Those appear to stay much greener here.

If I gave them more water they might do better. I have also considered running pvc up the back of their trunks with a sprinkler up top to give them "rain". I do not recommend them.

It looks like it rarely goes below 32f here, but will be prepared in case. More so than a freeze is my concern for nights under 40f, as those seem potentially more frequent than I'm used to. For anyone else that comes across this, it looks like Im in Zone 10A, with 9B close by. I'm not sure what the root stock is on this tree, but it looks like it produced flowers last season, and the trunk is quite thick. From doing a little internet research, it looks like Valencia Pride are a little bit more cold hardy then a Glenn or some other similar varieties. Will keep this thread posted on the progress of this tree.

Your picture did not show up. How tall is the tree? One climber I would recommend if the tree is 25 feet or shorter is Cl Caroline Testout, an old HT - it is the one they planted thousands of in Portland 100 years ago. There is one in my neighborhood which survived 10+ years growing in the garden of a vacant house. It climbed up a plum tree. No additional water, no nothing. I could see it blooming from the second story of our house. When that house sold I went over there, and the lady was unpacking dozens of potted roses out of a truck (good sign!). I told her about her old old rose, and she said there were no roses in the old, neglected garden (yet). We went to look, and found not one, but 2 Cl Caroline Testout plants, both with their lower halves completely covered by a blackberry thicket. Their upper halves were still climbing up the plum tree and blooming. We cleaned out the blackberries. This was 15 years ago, and both of those bushes are still doing well. I took a cutting and rooted it - here is a picture of my bush, and a closer one of the blooms. They are very double, and very round and sort of blowsy - I love them. I am in No Cal, and we get plenty hot - it was 100 degrees three days last week.

Try Acacia (there are many; very different looks among them). A. covenyi grows fast and makes a nice crown, as does A. pravissima. Also Parkinsonia, especially 'Desert Museum', although you won't get a dense crown. There are also wonderful Eucalyptus - don't be put off by the common types, there are many that are attractive. Might try x Chitalpa also. The oaks are lovely but really want to be in open pasture/rangeland. They are awkward when young and then get enormous. The crape myrtles are nice but aren't going to give you the shade you want. Olives are another choice. Mediterranean cedars (C. deodara or C. atlantica) might grow there, check that out, too. You need a local expert. You have more options than you think. You do need to water to get them established but these are all very drought tolerant. Also try Parrotia persica - it's from Iran and can take heat and drought. Good luck!

Im in SoCal and have 3 Yves Piaget rose thats always in bloom. Double Delight is another good standard rose thats always in bloom, but it doesnt meet your color needs but I think the fragrance might change your mind on that. :) Good luck.

On my six acres I have several groves that are all located in the bottom of canyons where winter water makes small streams that stop when the rain stops. These are native coast redwood which are second growth growing around a hole where the original was lumbered a hundred years ago. They are all around a hundred feet or so. Al

They grow here, but will never be as big and beautiful as where they can soak up coastal fog. Too hot and too dry, they decline and die.

Why not a California native Oak? They belong here and are as "California" as redwoods...

I think oak root fungus is present on my property otherwise I would go with Canyon Live Oak.

There are very good looking and healthy redwoods in my area but on second thoughts they take more water than everything else I've planted.

I have planted an Italian Stone Pine because they are perfectly suited to my climate and once they get large enough they can get by on their own. They are common in my town and I see them looking healthy on ground that grass has died on for want of water.

We have lots of Quercus agrifolia and Quercus kelloggii here and also oak root fungus. We lose a few of the black oaks from the fungus in the woods every year. The trees are old when lost and have been infected for several years before the tree falls with badly compromised roots. The live oaks are mostly in full sun locations and so far I have not found one suffering from the oak root fungus, mostly I think because of their dryer locations. Al
