Pineapples-How do you know when they're ripe?

Have 2 plants I bought a couple of months ago-with fruit-and now one fruit is turning yellow(ish) the other one is still very green--Does this mean it's ripening?? My g-daughter really wants to pick and eat it--Since I don't know much about these I'm here to ask the experts!! What do you think??

When they start to turn yellow you can pick them. Mine grow outside so once they start yellowing they become aromatic and the critters(racoons) can't resist. They will ripen further once picked, so wait until they turn completely yellow before preparing to maximize ripeness.

Pineapples are non-climacteric fruit. This means they do little to no ripening after being picked. Accordingly, I pick my pineapples when they are almost completely yellow. The fact that pineapples are non-climacteric fruit also means that store bought fruit won't get any sweeter than the day you buy them.

Other non-climacteric fruits include artichoke, asparagus, blackberry, blueberry, cauliflower, cherry, citrus fruits, eggplant, grape, lychee, strawberry and watermelon.

In contrast, apple, apricot, avocado, banana, mango, papaya, peach, pear, plum and tomato will all continue to ripen after being picked.

My birds eat apples two months before ripe and grapes a month early. I won't trust them one inch with blueberries. And how do you tell which ones they're eating? One trick is to look at the back side of the berry. That turns dark last. But that's hard to see on some varieties with tight clusters. Furthermore some need a week or several past being dark to lose the tartness. Protect from birds and force yourself to go without berries for a week. Test and if still not ripe enough wait another week. Another suggestion is to try other varieties. Living in FL you have many choices if you get enough chilling. Try Springhigh it tastes great even when still not fully dark and is very early. Sweet, low acid, and great blueberry flavor. Also get a Sweetcrisp which matures later. After you taste it you won't want another except to lengthen the harvest season. I think your Sunshine Blue would ripen last. By then you'd have it figured out.

Hi Laura, I have a couple of papaya trees also. I think you have to wait till you see a little bit of color (yellows/reds) depending on variety on the skin. Once you see some color on at least 1/3 of the plant's skin, you can pick it and let it ripen on your counter or pantry. Also they will soften a little to touch, similar to Mango... If you pick it too soon(too green) it will not ripen and probably start to rot. At least this has been my experience with mine. Enjoy! Here is a link that might be useful:

I have had some bare-root iris drying out in a cool room for about 3 weeks now (after their bleach bath) while I make a new bed for them....... Just went to check on them and on one iris, the middle fan has shot up about 4 inches. That's bare-root. Laying on the carpet. No dirt or water in site. Didn't realize they could do that...

The Marvel Stripe Zapotec are a very late season variety, when they appear mostly amber in color with a little red blushing is when they're ready to be plucked. You can try one that looks to fit that description and have a taste, then you should know if you need to leave the others on the vine a little longer or not. Corey
