OT Birds into windows :-()

Does anyone have a tip on how to keep birds from flying into bay windows? Do decals work? I presently have an injured Chickadee in a shoebox for later release, if he comes to all the way :/ This happens frequently and we don't like closing the curtains, which would certainly work. We live on the second floor, right in their flight path. Any suggestions are certainly welcome...

When we first built this house, a cardinal flew into a window and didn't make it. :( So, I put up several decals of hummingbirds on each window on that side of the house, and it hasn't happened since, since being 1997.

They're SO simple to apply, you can do it in a few minutes.

I use decals and a string of feathers I got from a bird online store (can't remember it now of course) after finding a Hermit Thrush dead outside our windows, and learning that almost a billion birds die every year from window collisions.

American Bird Conservatncy sells tape that is supposed to work really well. They say that there should be something every so many inches because if a bird thinks there's a barrier, they will try to go to the next spot (explains how they can fly through a forest so well).

You can also use tempura paint if you feel artsy. They have other ways to prevent them them from colliding into your windows.

Strouper, My DH read an article in National Geographic about birds and their speech and songs. It was quite amazing. We discovered that some birds will continue to sing/speak throughout the night since during the day there may have been too much 'noise' for them to be heard. Another thing is that if another bird doesn't respond, they will continue to verbalize until they get a response, and yet another reason for them to continue is that some will practice other bird's tweets and mimic them. We have Robins which sing all night sometimes. I enjoy their melodies and go to sleep much faster when they sing. DH doesn't... Then there is the Blue Jays which in the daytime will mimick others and make me believe there is a crow or a Nothern Flicker nearby. They are jacks of all tades. :O)

Those winter scenes sure are familiar! We have about the same amount of snow here. I actually would welcome more snow since my husband's business relies on snow revenue and the past 2 winters have been brutal on his business and our pocketbook. I'm not crazy about it personally, but it is 'white gold' to many. Plus, I do like it blanketing my daylilies over the winter. We have the same birds at our feeders as well. I so enjoy all the birds in the dead of winter. We have feeders everywhere, of every kind imaginable, and suet cakes too. My favorite feeder is the one right by my kitchen window where I can watch the birds up close while I do my dishes. My cats like to sit and watch them too and cures their winter boredom. I am always happy to hear that a kitty has found a loving home. Lucky Marmalade to show up at your doorstep! As I've mentioned before, I am jealous of all that land you have....just wonderful open space. I have too much of woods around me and not enough sunlight! Celeste

gldno1, I know what you mean...they are loud. My little "PW" was very very verbal at first. I love birds..doesn't matter what kind they are..in MHO they are all here by God's design and we should love them all...but I read on one website that common house wrens will kill bluebirds and destroy their eggs???? I have blue birds too and haven't had any problems with wrens killing them. We had wrens set up housekeeping in a cabinet on our carport for two or three years in a row...but my husband moved the cabinet and put it in a storage lean=to and I haven't had a chance to check to see if they found their home or not! nanahanna

The goldfinches are enjoying the new thistle sock I had to buy yesterday and interestingly, Ted, through all the bear visits I've had here not once have they ever got into the garbage can. However, Friday night's visitor was trying to get to the can I keep the sunflower seed in. He was standing on the ground in front of the porch, with his front legs through the railing and wrapped around the can like huge furry arms, trying to pull it to him. They often traverse the yard and don't touch a thing. I know they've been here 'cause they take out the fence when they go through. Susie

I'm happy to report that our little Chickadee made a full recovery and flew off. He was a little goofy looking for a while, but he straightened out and hopped into my Yew hedge-and started to sing! I'll pick up some decals today and apply them to both problem windows...

Something else that might work (I've seen in a plant nursery) these things that you can hang down and they shine. Shine, reflection. Supposed to scare birds away.

I like that idea too, much better than decals. I have some stained glass type art that hangs nicely in windows. I guess I should get them to hang lower...
I have several decals on the windows now and they seem to be working. No birds have flown into the window since :)
