I think it is more likely to be some sort of Cotyledon orbiculata variety, or another Cotyledon species. It is different to most of the cultivars of C. orbiculata I grow here in California, but I'm pretty sure that is what it is.

I agree with Bahia - it's a Cotyledon, a cousin relative to Kalanchoe. It's looking lush from the winter rains (assuming you shot this recently).

Do you also have habitat shots of Aeoniums (one of my favourite genus)? Pretty please?

Thanks for responses. I don't think it has the characteristics of Cotyledon as the leaves are heart-shaped, no red tinges, with no center point and the flowers are apparently not red on a stem but rather an insignificant green. I was told this by a neighbour of mine who took a cutting and grew it in her garden where it flowered.

I took these photos during the past couple of days. The plants are outdoors in a street planter and they are well kept. But everything grows like weeds here in this climate without much attention.

Cactusmcharris I will go out and see what Aeoniums I can find growing outdoors. I live just a few steps away from a botanical garden where I can go and also find these plants growing in large outdoor beds. And I'll come back with photos of whatever I find. Thank heavens the plants there are labeled. I may also find the ID and the variety of this succulent in the archives of the botanical garden. But please keep ideas coming.

Way out on a limb here...but I think it is a Kleinia/Senecio (by the way leaves are arranged on stems, veining). I couldn't suggest which species at the moment, but I'm looking! :P

If you know, can you tell us what the flowers looked like? (a photo would be fabulous)

Rosemarie I don't have a photo of the flowers but I will keep my eyes open for the next time they appear.

Today I went to the offices of the local Botanical Garden where they are quite knowledgeable and consulted with a couple of their specialists. They said it was definitely a kalanchoe and possibly kalanchoe thyrsifolia, but as there are so many varieties even they couldn't say for sure. Perhaps I'll start wandering around some of the garden centres here just in case I see one with a label.

Here's a good blog of a local Canary resident who has collected many photos of Aenomiums.

I have seen them growing outdoors in natural settings, including the flat Aeonium tabulaeforme growing on walls in the countryside.

You're right on closer look it isn't a Cotyledon, but it certainly doesn't look K. thyrsiflora as it grows here in California. It sounds like you have more diversity of Kalanchoes there being closer to the source!

rosemarieo6 is hard to argue with; the leaves are alternate, and in Kalanchoe only K. tomentosa and K. rhombopilosa possess that feature. A few others in the genus have their leaves in threes and the rest have them decussate (paired at right angles to those above or below). Nice photo, but not of a Kalanchoe. Yale
