Aha! Using the Love it Or Hate It on the right side of the screen to point out specifics, I came out to what I *think* is my style - or would like to be if I had the $$. I'm 86% Arts and Crafts "You tend to prefer simple to ornate and natural materials over man-made. Warm tones found in wood and brass make you feel comfortable, and good craftsmanship excites you like nothing else. You enjoy patterns that highlight our natural surroundings such as plants and trees. You prefer rectilinear forms and straight lines, however you love to find intricate details (ooooh, stained glass!) where you least expect it." Especially since it seems like I don't like WTs at all! And I've bought very ornate patterned (though tone-on-tone) drapes for LR and DR thinking they were my "formal" rooms so should have heavy drapes, plus I want to screen out strong light not to change color of BC floor and leather sofa. Maybe they'll look OK hung high on simple rods, no valance (at least in LR)? 14% "French Eclectic"? Never thought of that, though I do like fine antiques, I'm not really comfortable with them in my house. But the part about "French Eclectic somehow manages to be both formal and casual, classy and unassuming at the same time. You like your spaces to feel inviting from the moment you (or your guest) opens the front door and this feeling should continue even after you've entered your most formal room...the rustic country elements provide a balance and warmth that seems to say, "come in, relax and stay a while." Thanks for all the feedback. Somehow I'm not surprised that it's a NYC and surrounding-areas thing. From what our attorney explained yesterday and what I got from my other real-estate forum, the NYC-area 'tip' is a result of two things. One, the title company rep is paid some nominal fee per closing and doesn't receive directly any percentage of the money we paid for our title insurance and title search. Two, the tip is a throwback to an earlier era when notaries were not allowed to charge for their services, and you tipped the title rep as appreciation for his/her attendance at the closing and the notary services provided. To his credit, our title company rep was 100% on the ball. The seller's attorney was an elderly gentleman who's semi-retired and handled the closing as a courtesy to his long-time clients; he was not on the ball at all. The title guy was on his cell phone from the moment he walked in, having things emailed and faxed and covering up for the seller's attorney's incompetence. Both my husband (who's an attorney himself) and our attorney privately agreed that the closing would have been postponed for a day or two without the title rep's willingness to work and find creative solutions to deal with seller's attorney's mistakes and oversights. So yeah, we tipped in the end. Our attorney said "optional but, for the job this guy did, reward him" and we did.

Clues???? That's only for after everybody has guessed wrong, Kerry. I sense you guys are getting tired of this, but let's have a few more contestants first. Where is Yong? I don't want him to miss the boat again!

In the meantime, I'll give you your scores so far, using the nifty KBT 2-point-per-question system (1 for genus + 1 for species). Out of a possible 20 points, Japie is in the lead with 13, Kerry is gaining on him with 12, while Andy had 8 before watering but only 6 post-irrigation. That should give you plenty of clues. ;-)

Meanwhile, I'll go back and try my poor math skills on the rest!
......now if Japie answered 8 and got a score of 13, and I answered 10 and got 12, and if Andy answered 10 genera but only 3 species and got 8 but with thirst quenched lost 2 - ooh is 1 point for a species, without mention of cultivar maybe a clue? - and ummm... if, no what about, ummm.....ooh, quick!, must post this before Japie gets in. Yes, yes, I know....get a life Kerry...but it sure beats mowing.

These may have seemed harder, but you guys are actually doing pretty well. And without any clues! The only one nobody's mentioned yet is the second half of #3.

Yes, Kerry, one point for genus and one for species, I hadn't figured cv. names into the equation. Perhaps I should have had a 3 point system, but it doesn't seem to be an issue with any of these. Keeping score has gotten a bit harder now with all of the changes and multiple answers, but I'll do my best.

Japie, are you sure it's #2 you want to change? So far that's about the only one that everybody seems to agree on! I have a feeling your answer was meant for #4, as a couple of the others had. Assuming that to be the case, your current score is 14, otherwise it drops to 10. It's not always wise to go with the majority. ;-)

Kerry has moved into the lead with 16.... or 15, depending on how I score #8.

Glad you caught the boat, Yong, you have 13 points.

Andrew, you changed a couple of your answers mid-post. If I count everything mentioned you get 12 points, but if I go with your final answers, it's 11. BTW, your suspicions are correct. ;-)

So, I'll let you math/logic wizards figure it all out while I sleep, and I'll give the full list in the morning.
In the meantime, for #3..... think small.

I agree Kerry - and I said to myself when I entered my answers first time, I'm NOT going to change any of them, no matter who says what! But then I went outside and had a good look at my Ae Alaya when everybody else suggested it is caudata variegata. And mine looked so flimsy so I thought I'll just change that one . . . . .

And Lisa, I thought about why you would use the same plant twice, so I had a look at the original and saw 2 distinct differences: one more, one less glossy but the main difference, the markings on mexicana has a more vertical inclination to them, where as Alvim's tend to have a more horizontal feel to them.

And it is these small little differences that gets me so addicted to these plants. So, with these postings, you are forcing us to really look and not just glancing and seeing a nice plant 'that kind of looks just like that nice one over there!'

So, what about a whole series of these 'Eye-openers'? I am sure there are plenty others that would like to see more of these close-up shots of you!
