Dump and flush the cup, the water does look sudsy. The plant is coming into bloom, so that may have something to do with it. Do you know what the name of the plant is? If you do then you can look at the FCBS Photo index photos of the plant and see it it turns purple like that when blooming.

What brand of dishsoap?

When the mom croaked, I took the 2 pups and planted them out.I have it's sibling planted next to it. I believe it gets a little more shade so it's more stretched out. Both got the regular lemon el-cheapo soap treatment (dollar store bottle)I've never had any irregularities such as this before. All the other 50+ broms showed no ill effects. hmmm

It's got nothing to do with blooming. It's some kind of damage, but it may not be critical. Certain red or pink Neos will turn blue whenever they get dinged or scratched (the Groves-type hybrids are particularly prone to this). It usually goes away in a couple of weeks.

Did you dilute the cheapo dish soap in water or squirt it right on the plant? The pattern of spots on the leaves makes me think that something was splashed or squirted on them, and undiluted detergent could certainly cause damage. Even diluted, detergents have some harsh chemicals in them, as opposed to soaps, which are much milder. Go with the mildest soap you can find, and mix just a few drops in a pitcher of water before you pour it in the cup.

I put a couple squirts in my 2 gal watering can, then I poured it into the cups. I've been doing this for 3 yrs without ill effects. The cup just lookes extra sudsy because I had just blasted them with the hose. I'll just keep an eye on it. I kind of like the splotches as long as it doesn't kill the plant.

Okay, if it's not that, could a dog or other animal have, um, relieved itself on them? Or some other concentrated substance dripped or sprinkled on them? Definitely looks like droplets or particles of something strong hit the plant.

It's not just the blue-- go further back on the leaf and there are green spots too. Something "turned off" the red pigment in all those spots, hopefuly just temporarily.

It IS kind of attractive, though. ;-)

I think the citric acid from the soap did it...since there isnt much of a standard on manufacturing soaps...maybe that batch had to much leeemonnn man LOL

Junglegal, I agree, it does look nice. I have a Neo Scarlet Charlotte, which has a very nice intense pink/red colour. And then I got another one - travelled all the way from Michael to the Southen tip of Africa. Obviously it was a bit stressed when it got here and it showed me a lot of blue, rather patches than spots. But since the plant is planted and got a lot of TLC and started actively to grow again, all the blue has reverted back to the intense pink/red colour. Here is a picture of what my 'old' and new plant looked like. Enjoy it while it lasts! Japie

crisis solved! I noticed a couple granules of tropical fert on another brom near by. It too had started to have bluish discoloration under the granule! The only thing I can think of is that either a bird or my cat rustled around the broms and kicked the fert upon the leaf.

You know...some really single romatic brom fanatic could be really ingenious in popping the question! Take a tweezers..spell out "will you marry me?" in fertilizer granules..let the brom cook 24 hrs then bring your honey out to view your latest creation :P LOL

BTW, the brom in the pic...it's reverting back to normal 24 hours after a good flush. I've been schooled!
