Hi everybody.

I am Sander Schmidt from the Netherlands and I an new on this forum. Been reading it a lot though.

I have a small collection of plants and I like to thank you people for showing me how to pollinate.

I've been trying to selfpollinate my broms for years, and hey guess what..... nothing happened.

I have Neo Spectabilis, Fireball and Ampullacea in flower now and since discovering you guys I am really busy every morning, if I have the time that is.

Now lets's wait and see what happens...

Nice (neo) hybrids are very hard to come by over here so lets see if i can make some myself. This spring I Ebayed some dubious pups from Portugal.

And now I'm so fired up I just ordered 12 new plants from Ebay Germany this evening. Mostly true species. The names an pictures seem to be acurate, looks like these people know what they are talking about.

I ordered a Bilbergia Nutans hybrid, they coudn't give me a name, this is the picture posted on Ebay. This is the picture from Ebay not the actual plant I'm getting.

ID anyone??

Hi Sander, and welcome to the group! Pretty soon we'll have somebody hybridizing bromeliads in every country in the world! Actually, there are probably quite a few in the Netherlands already, but more in the realm of commercial production of Vrieseas and Guzmanias, not so much Neos and Bills. Is it too difficult to get plants from the US or Australia?

The Billbergia in your picture looks like 'Fascinator' to me. It's only one quarter nutans, but I guess that qualifies as a "nutans hybrid".

I thought that Bill was a 'fascinating' enough to spend 12 $.

You're right, the Netherlands export thousands (or maybe even millions) of Guzmania and Vriesea Hybrids worldwide. Hardly any Neo's and Bills as far as I know. "We're Dutch, it's all about flowers not about foliage."

Since we don't get that much sun here as you do, most stay green, even in a south facing window. I chuck everyting outside in the spring so they get full sun all day long, untill winter comes. I really try to bake them and that works fine. Although we had a very very wet summer they all look fine coulorwise, the pots don't dry out enough to my liking this year. It shows in my spectabilis normaly the new leafs are a lot wider.
Fireball, and spectabilis really 'pop' that way. Even Vr. Fenestralis has a purple/reddish hue to it (if it's a true fenestralis). Comercialy not very interesting to breed plants that need that treatment I guess.

I tried Fenestralis several times and they all wilted away, untill I placed the last survivor on my balcony after a year of hardship. Now it's growing to 'wagonwheel' size

Import from US and Oz is not easy, possible but a lot of hassle with import papers. Inside the European Union country to country is no problem.

Hi Pollon. Welcome to the world of Plumerias. Let me warn you that many of the people on this site are plumiaholics meaning we are addicted to collecting the next variety to hit the market. We have been known to rip out perfectly good gardents to make room for more plants. Cuttings of Plumeria range from about 8 dollars to 300 dollars depending on quality and rarity. For a starter, I would suggest looking for a Celadine first, a Jeannie Moragne next, and then a grove farm. I know that Maui Plumeria gardens has inexpensive prices and ships internationally, but I have only bought a few cuttings from them. Perhaps some of the members have dealt with them (http://www.mauiplumeriagardens.com/index.php?cPath=1) and can give you more insight. I know their prices are under $20 and any Moragne at that price is an excellent choice. If you research with you agricultural people and requirements or problems shipping in seeds, then e-mail me and I will send you some free white seeds this summer when my pods open. Other members might know other inexpensive sites but you will need to e-mail the sites to find out about international rules and shipping rates. Many may not ship overseas. If you pick up plants, go through the postings on this forum and pay attention to comments by Mikeod, Brittany and Wildcat. They have given a textbook of good suggestions and the do's and don'ts for the newcomer that is free if you just scroll and read. I do not know if Sicily gets frosts or freezing (below 0 C). If no, plumerias will do great. If yes, then you will need to ask what to do. Wildcat grows plumerias near Chicago, but it requires special dealings. Good luck- perhaps some day you will be the plumeria king of Sicily.

IF I were going to do a mud floor with heat mats, I'd go ahead with the normal tar paper and wire lath base, then I'd lay down some of the dry-pack, lay in the mats, and lay some more dry-pack over the top of the wires, and scread it off, thereby burying the wires and mudding the floor all in one shot. Mudding the floor and then laying the wires on top seems to me to be defeating the purpose. As an alternative, he could also lay down the wires under ALL the mud, but then there would be that much more mortar insulating the heat from reaching the surface.

Saw your other thread. It seems something has changed since the time that you had lower bills. A competent, certified technician should be able to do a full diagnosis/cleaning and see what's wrong. Are any ducts closed/blocked? You may have a bad part somewhere. Have your rates just gone up tremendously (oil, gas, electric providers?) The programmable thermostat should help, but don't expect huge savings. If your old one is bad and causing the problem then you'll likely see more savings. Really hope things work out for you. Sorry I don't know much to tell you at this point.

Just off the top of my head, I would probably move the table into the flex room right now and put your piano front and center in the great room. Make your piano the star in the room. Use the flex room as your dining room since you don't use it that often. Then I'd probably put a prep sink on the island with your cooktop centered as you had it. I'd move the ovens down to the left side and put the cleanup sink on the right with the dw to the right of the sink. You don't need a window over a cleanup sink as you spend maybe 10 minutes a day cleaning up. Put a pretty shelf or a dish rack or a pretty tile arrangement over the cleanup sink. I'd make the laundry room into one long room and move the W/D against the outside wall. You could also just enclose it with pocket doors and have the mudroom/laundry as one large room. I'd ditch the pantry sink and just have the pantry as one large pantry/butler's pantry. You have room to make the guest room larger. I did so in the plan. Yes it's not equal but you'll never notice it when you're actually walking into the room. Trust me on that. You don't view your space from the ceiling. That automatically narrows the foyer and since the door opens against the guest room, that too will help you not see that it's not "equal".

Welcome Sander! Lisa could be correct about the ID. The red blush on it makes me think of B. 'Fantasia' Red Clone also. "Fascinator" has the pointed leaf tips like yours but that blush....hmmm...

Gonzer, mine has that bronzey color. It just depends on how much light and fertilizer it gets.

This is Don Beadle's photo of 'Fascinator' from one of the old BSI Journals. His plant is even stronger colored than mine.

I shoulda looked where mine is growing first Lisa, before inserting foot. I'm used to the shadier grown ones but you can see a redder offset in this pic where it gets more sun.
