Self taught Chemistry lesson for making acidic water
Comments (94)I know this is an old thread, but in case anyone is searching on this topic... I've noticed that my plants love it when it rains, they are perky and refreshed in a way that I don't see after watering or fertilizing. I decided to simulate rainwater by adjusting my tap water pH down from 7.4 to 5.5. My adjusted pH is somewhere in the 5.0-6.0 range due to small dosing inaccuracies. I acidify my water using sulfuric acid @ ~32% concentration (battery acid 1.28 mol). I've been using it with tablespoons as well as 1CC droppers and have no issues whatsoever. The acid is pretty safe to use if you take some basic precautions and aren't sloppy about it. Even so, it's not that strong of a concentration to do any real harm as long as you're close to a hose and don't get any in your eyes. Wear glasses just in case. My plants absolutely LOVE the lower pH water. They look perky and refreshed just like they do after a rainstorm. There are other beneficial effects as well. My seeds appear to be sprouting much faster than usual, the compost clumps that are sitting atop my soil have started to seriously break down finally, and my soil retains more moisture than it did before switching to lower pH water w/ sulfuric acid. Bottom line: My plants like it and I have noticed only positive effects. I will continue watering them with acidified water....See MoreBe careful what you wish for. (Long)
Comments (20)Thanks all for the words and the phone calls. We are drying out now. Sunday brought more rain but only floding the garden so we could start on the basement. It is a good time to clean out old crap. It was either stay postive or start crying. We were very lucky, others just a few miles from me have had to evacuate and are still under water. Theh rains are the results of tropical storm Lowell, from Mexico then backed by Ike. MEN! Jessy, the overbred carp are in the pond and I spent the morning cleaning that out. I have skimmed out 6 pack plastic, water bottles, construction junk and two muck buckets of landscape mulch. Filters are going full force to clean the water now and I can see the fish again. Ocean? The only water I want to see right now is a hot shower. Dinner is out tonight, although I "cooked" the last two. We were just too tired to get cleaned up and dress to go out, even for take out. Frozen leftovers are wonderful. One glass of wine and I was out. Tricia, we live on a flood plain here so even if the insurance were to cover a claim, there is a good chance they would just drop us or move us to the high risk category. Since all appliances are running and nothing of great value needs to be tossed, we are good. And since I work for the "Good Hands" folks, I know the drill. They will play the game now, was it rain water or "seepage".... Going for a shower and a burger out now. Thaks everyone. ANd Dad said thanks for the compliments....See MoreIrresponsible pet owners
Comments (16)You sound quite responsible to me, Newhomeseeker, and I agree with the others that most cats would not make a huge mess out of the garbage. (Dogs and raccoons sure would. Even a skunk or a possum might.) Jump on the roof of a car with muddy paws?--well, maybe, and the paw prints would be a good hint as to the culprit. Get inside a car whose windows were left open?--maybe. My two cats have done both of those things to our car, but they didn't use it as a toilet. I confess that I, too, smiled at the image of what happened to your neighbors, considering how nasty they were with their dog and accusing you of creating drama when you complained. To my mind, people who don't want cats to get in somewhere need to close their garage door or the windows of their cars. Cats are very different from dogs, and there is a reason why almost no communities even try to legislate that people keep their cats on leashes, tie them up, or not let them roam outdoors. For their own safety, I don't let my cats run loose where we are now, but when we were in a location where they couldn't get hit by a car, we had a cat door that let go them in and out at will any hour of the day or night. Our dogs were not allowed to do that. In fact, there were a number of things that we let our cats get away with that we would never have permitted the dogs to do. Trigemini: There is at least one company I have seen advertising cat fences. A cat fence is like an additional section secured near the top of a conventional fence or--as in the case of the company whose URL I will post here-- sometimes at the top of a whole fence specially made for cats. (Disclaimer: My husband and I have no connection whatsoever to the cat fence company.) After hearing about cat fences, we made our own "cat fence" that sloped upward from our 5' tall wooden fence at an angle, so we wouldn't hit our heads on it. It extended a couple of feet into our yard. A cat fence is made of netting or another material that from a cat's point of view is quite see-through, so a cat will not venture to leap up on it. Our fence was made using chicken wire, and it is true, the cats wouldn't try to leap onto or over it. As the cat fence hangs over into the protected cat's yard, it prevents the cat from leaping up and over the regular fence. If you buy cat fencing from a company, they have special arrangements so that you can put the "fence" on a door or gate, too, and yet be able to open it. We only put our own fencing up on the side next to a neighbor who has a vicious dog. This sort of fencing, as it needs to extend into the yard where the cats are, would not work for keeping cats *out*, only *in*, and neighbors probably wouldn't want a couple of feet of your fencing sticking into their yards. Here is a link that might be useful: cat fence company...See MoreTotally OT, but if you need a laugh read this!
