I'm excited

Well, guys, I gotta tell ya....I'm excited. For years I've been interested/curious about the Monarch. I've grown milkweed and watched as the flutterby's laid eggs, watched the cats eat and grow, but never had anyplace to closely observe the process...until recently, so I would have to go on a hunt and hope to find a chrysalis. Sometimes I would, but mostly not, and wonder what happened to the cat.

I found this thraed and have been reading and learning. Till now. I finally built myself a greenhouse, not plastic covered, but covered with screen. I found some cats outside on the milkweed, so I brought the plant inside, found other cats, and brought them inside, too and put everyone on the one plant, for a total of four little cats cruising around getting fat and happy. Wasn't long and I had to bring in another plant....Way COOL!! Soon they all walked off to start the second phase of their life. I'm not really into a total control situation, I just wanted to give them a safer, more protected environment, so after they wandered off, I had to find them. Not too difficult, a bit like a treasure hunt.

I went out to check on them today and found one had emerged, and one was transparent, ready to open. The one already out was just sitting letting his wings harden. The other I knew was close, so I took photos and walked off to check back later. I got a phone call while walking back to the house, and they asked what I was doing. Told them I was checking on "the guys", and they said "tell me about it". I waked back to describe it, and WOW!!, the second one was just emerging. Her chrysalis had just split and she was working her way out....more photos. What timing!! I was excited, to say the least. I finally got to watch the miracle happening. I had never actually seen it happening..always wanted to, but never had the opportunity. Now I guess I'm going to have to take the time to watch the process from J hanging to chrysalis forming. Almosr happened with the first one, but by the time I got back to the one I was watching, the process had already happened...oh well, I have the rest of the summer.

Now, I'm not a spring chicken. Im 60yo, been a lot of places, done a lot of things and seen a lot. But being able to finally observe this, well, I get excited. I just had to tell someone..... my wife and son both share my awe and excitement.....but I had to share with you guys, too.

Haven't found any more cats lately, but I keep checking daily. Hopefully I will get to help a few more flutterbys get their wings. Nothing would make me happier than to have every milkweed I have eaten down to nubs.
